You don't have to apologize, or perform authorial disgust, for dark, violent, sexual, cruel or problematic topics in the fiction you create.

Fiction does not exist to teach an audience a moral lesson. You as an author are not required to be your audience's moral teacher.

You can have bad things happen-- you can have a protagonist who is bad-- without having to explain to your audience that they are bad.

I was just thinking about how important it is to have authors (both fan and professional) with whom I feel... safely unsafe, if that makes sense.

Like, this is going to hurt, there are going to be things that happen to these characters that I absolutely Do Not Want to happen, but I trust you and I trust this ride.

sounds very bad I know, but it's not like I don't find that in itself alarming!

pedophile is the new "freak" or "loser', it's not taken seriously anymore, it has become just a new word to call people you don't like even when they didn't do anything

yknow the story of the boy who kept yelling "wolf!" to prank the rest of the village, so when an actual wolf came no one listened and he was mauled? that's what that is.

by reducing such a serious issue to "erhm i dont like this person or their content so they must like kids!", you're actually harming victims and making it harder for them to be taken seriously

💖 It's normal to imagine dark and unpleasant ideas in fiction that you would never want to happen in real life.

💖 Romanticizing the darkness, turmoil and taboo in relationships in fiction has been done for eons and it hasn't destroyed civilization or humanity's moral fiber yet.

💖 If you tell people that dark romantic fiction will erode their morals or is indicative or personal moral weakness it makes you sound like a Victorian era misogynist worrying over girls reading novels.
