Chapter 6: Models on the runway
Alexander Mcqueen Fall 1998 RTW
One of Alexander McQueen's most theatrical presentations was his 1998 Fall collection, "Joan," which is legendary for its edgy and grandiose fashion performances. This fashion show is frequently recognized as one of the spookiest runways ever produced. It was inspired by the deaths of Joan of Arc and the Romanov children. Models removed their eyebrows and used red contacts and medieval headdresses. The last look in the collection was undoubtedly the creepiest and most amazing scene. The model, who was dressed in a scarlet robe that concealed her face, slowly moved into the middle of the stage before striking her last poses as a ring of flames burst around her, mirroring Joan of Arc's own horrific faith. We have no idea who the model is. The designer put more of an emphasis on the clothing's artistic design than the model's identity. The show's atmosphere is unsettling throughout, but the closing really brings it to a chilling finale.

Cosey Fanni Tutti, Mayuko Hino, Debbie Jaffe, and Lisa Carver were all sex workers and were all early noise/industrial pioneers. They used extreme music and art to contextualize their experiences. Sex workers have always been important to noise and industrial and always will be. To ignore the powerful work they make is to remain ignorant of what this music is meant to be used for.
