Hello again my pathetic paper towel mopey eyeliner fool whom I adore, I hope you’re ready to finally feel something in that stupid ass heart of yours ‘cause I sure am (all typed with affection.)

The rippled marble doors of the throne room slammed shut behind Morpheus, and he immediately felt lost. He didn’t know where to start. Didn’t understand where he could start. Not with the punch he felt in his gut, doubling him over with every step. The thundering in his ears, pounding into his skull as if the world were collapsing down on him in shattering shards of glass. The pain in his heart, as if Lucifer had pierced their arm through his chest and began squeezing their fist. He was so unused to the feeling, the ache, the desolation and despair and desire of love, that they hounded him as he walked through his empty halls like a shadowed ghost. Its footsteps were in rhythm with his, and yet as much a stranger to himself as the waking world defied dreams.

Before he had time to choke back down his heart; to file away such foolish, damning nonsense as the ideals of love into the abysses of his mind, the toes of his boots reached over the edge of his dock. He was lost in the cold mists that bit his face, for a moment, until the sight of a diamond tear dripping into the wallowing tides brought him back to himself. Although his stricken face would never give away the anguish he was feeling inside, a soft cough from a following Lucienne was all the note he needed to realise that she understood completely. 

This was something he must do, unless he be torn apart from the inside out. Lest he be ravished and flurried into a whirlwind of sand and dust just by the mere thought of you.

The last thing he heard, as he reached slender fingers down into the murky depths and swept them away in search of you, was Lucienne’s concerned voice. ‘Take care, my Lord. The Realm may be able to manage two majesties… but it will not be able to manage without any. Take care. Don’t let yourself be swept away again.’

It was far too late for that. As Lucienne brushed down her tailcoat, and took one last peering look down at the water, she sighed to herself and wandered back to the palace. With each step, she became more and more resigned to the fact that she may face another lifetime or two here, with nothing but empty shelves and crumbled walls for company.

It takes Dream even less time to find you. He stalks through long stalks of wheat, black coat draped across his shoulders to save his pale face from the burning gold sun. Even though you don’t understand who he is yet, you can picture him clear as day in your mind. Even as you sit, watching over the rolling hills on a bough of an orange tree, the sight of Dream wandering over the land makes you laugh. He sticks out like a straw scarecrow, the birds following him and pecking at his feet as he glides over the mud. He seeks you, even though he can’t see you; a pull at his heart pulls him forward into the harsh burn of the daylight.

Okay but you’re spending your evening just hanging out and watching Spider-Man: No Way Home when Morpheus appears in your living room because he has no sense when it comes to letting you know ahead of time that he wants to see you or just, y’know, having Matthew pop by and be like “boss is coming in five!”

So after you recover from your heart attack you let him know that you’re just watching a movie tonight so if he has better things to do involving The Dreaming/being an Endless, he can do that. He doesn’t understand why you’d say that bc why wouldn’t he want to spend time with you, so he sits down next to you and lets you drape yourself over him before you unpause the movie.

Of course, Dream was imprisoned long before comic books really came to be mainstream, so he has no clue what anything on the screen is. You have to pause every time a new character appears on screen, because he will undoubtedly say, “Who’s this?” and you have to try and respond while also not launching into all the lore™️.

(“Who’s this?”

“MJ, Peter’s girlfriend.”

“Who’s this?”

“Doc Ock, he’s a villain from another universe.”

“Who’s this?”

“Matt Murdock.” On screen, the brick flies through the window, and Matt catches it with ease. You say his line at the same time that he does, “He’s a really good lawyer,” and laugh when Dream looks shocked that you knew what he was going to say. God, you love having a boyfriend that knows nothing about technology or movies or anything.)

And this keeps up, honestly, you’re having a blast with it. It’s fun to get to introduce characters that you’ve watched since you were little to an anthropomorphic personification who is eons older than you are. And then it gets to the scene where one Flint Marko is dropped into the MCU, and Dream again asks who that is.

“Sandman,” you say without thinking, forgetting who it is you’re sitting next to.

“Who?” Morpheus asks in bewilderment.

“Oh!” Shit, you did not anticipate this. “No, it’s not like, a character based off of you or anything like that. He’s literally made out of sand, which is why he’s called Sandman.”

Morpheus scoffs. “My, it must have taken them ages to try and come up with a name so clever.”

You smirk. “Are you mad that your name’s been co-opted, or are you mad he doesn’t have your powers?”

“I’m not mad over a fictional character. It’s just ridiculous that a character such as this would be designed, only for them to name him,” Morpheus scoffs again, as if the very thought is paining him, “Sandman.”

Mad about the name, then. Got it. “I can…pick something else to watch?” you suggest.

Dream shakes his head, acting like this didn’t just get him all riled up. “No, let us finish your superhero movie,” he grumbles before begrudgingly allowing you to hesitantly turn your attention back to the screen.

It’s a good thing Sandman doesn’t have a major part in this movie.

Nekoma Manager Headcanons

To start: talk about chaos.

I imagine the manager!reader as a 2nd year, as stated in my first one shot.

You look up to the third years, though the way you and Kuroo act you'd never admit it to his face.

Once you grow comfortable with the team, and vice versa, the two of you bicker like siblings.

Kai is who you gravitate to the most, he's so calm and quiet, you two grew closer faster because of this.

Yaku and Kuroo were both lowkey jealous; they both work on being doting upperclassmen in their own ways and now their manager is anxious around them? Heartbroken.

The first years think you hung the stars.

Lev is always trying to impress you with his moves, which more than often results in him missing a spike or getting hit in the face with what was supposed to be a receive.

Most of his failed attempts end with Yaku scolding him and you are torn between allowing him to shape his team and stepping in to play peacemaker.

Shibayama is the first team member to confide in you regarding any anxiety they had while playing; he compares himself to Yaku so much that it broke your heart, you two talked and you made him see he had made the team for a reason, and he left feeling much better.

Teshiro is more awkward or shy when approaching you, he may have been a first-year when you met him, but he knew the team hadn't had a manager in a long time. He was worried they might scare you off, specifically one of the... second years... But you stuck around! He liked to be around you, even if neither of you talked all the time, your presence was enjoyable. He also tended to be one of the only members (he and Kai) that didn't get scolded or yelled at.

Inuoka reminds you of a puppy, regardless of being on the team of "cats". He was actually the first member of the team to fully approach you, more than a simple introduction. He was so excited that you were their manager, it definitely helped you feel a lot more comfortable. Did you process everything he said to you? No. Was it endearing as hell? Yes.

If Kenma isn't sitting with Kuroo on bus rides he's sitting with you, you enjoy watching him playing his games, that or he enjoys the peace whenever you nap on the bus. Once he even let you play a game on his switch. Once.

Yamamoto is really excited to show you off at any and all practice matches they have. You're so supportive of them all that it makes him really emotional, and you've learned to just pat his head and walk away. You once showed up to an away game with your nails painted in your team colors and you watched that man genuinely weep.

Fukanaga loves to make you laugh whenever the team's quiet or having a more serious meeting. He learned your humor so fast it's dangerous. You can never be upset around him, he reads you like an open book, and whatever worry follows you around is quickly destroyed by him and his shining personality.

Like I said; you and Kuroo have a sibling like relationship once you're comfortable with the team. He leans his arm against your head like a headrest, you make fun of his attempts of sounding cool. The team finds it hilarious, and other than Yaku and Kenma, you're one of the few people he's terrified to piss off.

Kai is the upperclassman you look up to the most, he's calm and collected, smart and nice. He's everything you strive to be as a student and an upperclassman. He helps you study, he helped you learn about volleyball and all the info that comes with that when you first joined, he made sure to include you in any and all group hangouts when you were new.

Kai supremacy.

Yaku and you have, not to sound like I'm stuck in the 2020 fandom, but "parenting" personalities together. Yaku yells at Lev, you follow behind by telling Lev you two care about him and just want to see him get better! Yaku may worry when a teammate gets minorly injured, but you fret, despite knowing minor injuries occur in this sport. The time where you're on the same page exactly is whenever you take the opportunity to bully Kuroo.

He hates it.

I have to say: years ago when I first got into Haikyuu I made an OC for it, and she was Nekoma's manager. This entire thing is self-indulgent. If I was any good at art I'd have so many comic series with her. Sad.

Also I just saw the movie so I am hyperfocused on my boys.
