Things I Need More Of In My Life: Midwestern Gothic/horror Stories.

Things I need more of in my life: Midwestern gothic/horror stories.

Barns with no doors that almost seem to breathe, their walls bending inward and outward every few seconds.

That one diner at the edge of town where the people you see through the windows on the outside are not the same as the ones inside.

That late night train that travels slowly across the tracks, steam leaking out of the closed doors of the cars. If you listen closely you can hear skittering inside them.

In the park there is a circle of dead grass right behind the swings and if you get close enough you can hear it whispering.

Fields of corn that rustle in the wind and anyone foolish enough to wander into them are never heard from again. Sometimes the farmers will find their shoes during the harvest.

Back roads that don’t make geographical sense. Sometimes you just get stuck in a curve for an hour only to find yourself a mile away from the nearest town afterwards.

Passing the same farm house five times in a row.

Never listen to the crows. Their secrets will alter you in terrible ways.

The scarecrows are always wearing new clothes whenever you see them, even when you take your eyes off them for only a moment.

Don’t ever mention the man who waves to you on your way to work every morning. Don’t mention that he’s been dead for ten years.

Never buy flowers from the flower shop on Main Street. You know the one: the doors are always open, even in winter, and you can smell the sweet scent of roses mixed with something rotting.

I've only read the 13 main series books. I what order do you recommend I read the other books? (Mainly, Autobiography and Beatrice Letters before or after ATWQ and 13 Suspicious?)

An interesting question. Here’s the chronological order:

“29 Myths on the Swinster Pharmacy”,

“Who Could That Be At This Hour?” & “When Did You See Her Last?”,

“File Under: 13 Suspicious Incidents”,

“Shouldn’t You Be In School?”, & “Why Is This Night Different From All Other Nights?”

“The Dismal Dinner”,

“The Bad Beginning” and the notes from “The Bad Beginning: Rare Edition”,

From “The Reptile Room” to “The Hostile Hospital”,

“The un-Authorized Autobiography” and “Calendar of Unfortunate Events”,

From “The Carnivorous Carnival” to “The End”,

“The Beatrice Letters”.

And here’s my prefered, recommended order:

From “The Bad Beginning” to “The Grim Grotto”,

“The un-Authorized Autobiography”, “The Dismal Dinner”, “Calendar of Unfortunate Events” and the notes from “The Bad Beginning: Rare Edition”,

“The Penultimate Peril”,

“The Beatrice Letters”,

“The End”,

“29 Myths on the Swinster Pharmacy”,

“Who Could That Be At This Hour?” & “When Did You See Her Last?”,

“File Under: 13 Suspicious Incidents”,

“Shouldn’t You Be In School?”, & “Why Is This Night Different From All Other Nights?”

A lot of the supplementary material can’t really be enjoyed if you don’t have a basic knowledge of what happens during most of “A Series of Unfortunate Events”. This also applies to “All The Wrong Questions”, which is admittedly difficult to understand if you don’t have any idea of  what VFD actually involves.

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

Film Noir Movies

Film Noir Movies

People think that Film Noir is a reaction to World War II. Not true. Most of the great hard-boiled and noir pulp fiction came out during the 30’s, as a reaction to the great depression. Film noir didn’t become a big thing until after the war (post 1945), because the powers that be didn’t want to release pessimistic, down-ending films that would lower the country’s morale.

OK Tumblr Geriatric Ward, let’s talk about your posture-

OK Tumblr Geriatric Ward, Let’s Talk About Your Posture-

there are things you should be doing now to prevent yourself from starting to look like 🥀

Why does it matter? Future you would like to avoid the pain, limited motion, and fall risk that goes along with worsening posture.

What’s the focus?

1. Keep the flexibility in your spine

2. Stretch the muscles in the front

3. Strengthen the muscle in the back

Here are some simple things you can do daily while sitting and when you get up to go into the bathroom or the kitchen

Keep the flexibility by doing these repeated movements: 10 repetitions several times a day

OK Tumblr Geriatric Ward, Let’s Talk About Your Posture-

The goal is to give yourself a double or triple chin. Keep your nose pointing forward, don’t let it tip up or down

OK Tumblr Geriatric Ward, Let’s Talk About Your Posture-

Thoracic extension- use a chair with a seat back that comes up to the level of your shoulder blades. Try to bend back over the top of the chair without arching away from the seat back and without extending your neck. If the pressure from the top of the chair is uncomfortable you can place a towel there

Stretch the muscles in the front by using a door frame. This one will feel good afterwards

OK Tumblr Geriatric Ward, Let’s Talk About Your Posture-

If this isn’t enough of a stretch you can do one side at a time. If you have the right arm up step forward with the right foot and turn slightly to the left. Then do it on the other side.

OK Tumblr Geriatric Ward, Let’s Talk About Your Posture-

Strengthen the muscles in the back by squeezing your shoulder blades together for a count of 10 and then repeating 10 times. You can do this several times a day Hint: Don’t lift your shoulder blades up

OK Tumblr Geriatric Ward, Let’s Talk About Your Posture-
OK Tumblr Geriatric Ward, Let’s Talk About Your Posture-

There are lots more exercises for strengthening your back muscles but this is a good starting point and easy to do. I like doing it while driving

Tips:

Do the best you can

If it hurts stop

Envision future you saying thank you each time you do one of the exercises
