Are you trying to tell me a story? How many eyes do you have?
Just the two?
mmmmm... I don't know buddy, you don't seem qualified.
I Died For You [A Malevolent Animatic]
Voice acting and audio by @malevolentcast , who very generously sent me this audio file to use for this animatic. Thank you for creating such a beautiful show.
Background and details under cut
I began this animatic early last year after finding the audio on TikTok. Once I heard it, I was immediately struck with the thought of how those first couple of weeks in the Dark World would be for John immediately after Season 2. It seemed perfectly fitting, how John might be tortured by his guilt and uncertainty if Arthur was even still alive, and that torment would only aid his regression to his more… Kingly qualities.
I began to draft the thumbnails of the animatic in my sketchbook before transferring it to my digital workspace, which was incredibly intimidating at the time. This was my first independent animatic. In last year’s InvictusCon, Harlan popped into my stream as I was explaining my animatic thought process to my viewers, shaking with both excitement and terror. I was stunned when he offered to voice it himself. The next day, he sent me the audio file. To this day, I am still stunned he spent so much time and effort to create something. It was the encouragement I needed to finish a longer-form animatic. It may be only a minute and some change, but this is a whole year of my life condensed - my obsession, my adoration, my passion for not only this podcast but for art in general, both visual and audio.
It’s by happy accident that I finished this right at the cusp of the Season 5 finale. It almost perfectly slots in. So… let’s all pretend that this animatic took me a month to do rather than the year I spent sweating on my couch and complaining about the number of times I forgot Arthur’s wooden finger.
A little comic for Mermay
I miss when everyone on my dash listened to Welcome to Night Vale so there’s be a good chance that on any ole day someone would reblog a quote that would grab me by the throat and forcibly ascend me to a higher plane where I understood myself and the universe better and with more kindness but also a little spook
what i love most about this tumblr poll era is that all of us immediately decided to unleash every single social behaviour experiment of the last century onto each other in a way that would make even the hardiest of psychologists tremble. it's like if lab rats saw what the scientists were doing and decided to cut out the middle man
Are they in therapy? God knows they need it
Or, my favorite flavor of podcast protagonist: traumatized
[ID: Three animated gifs of podcast characters, followed by stills from the gifs. First is Jon Sims, a long-haired man with glasses, crouched on an office chair with a tape recorder in his hand. Behind him, a disembodied eye periodically opens and closes, bathing him in green light. Second is Arthur Lester, a stocky man in a suit and long coat, sitting with a bundle of something in his lap. Behind him, a shadowy demon periodically appears, and his eyes turn black and yellow when it does. Third is Doug Eiffel, a skinny man with loose, curly hair, wearing headphones and a jumpsuit. He is free floating against a background of stars and has just dropped a cigarette. End ID]
Thank you fot the ID @genderfluid-druid
there is a judge in Seattle who does the weekly name change hearings, and who says it's her favorite part of the week. she says she doesn't read out previous names, or ask about the reasons why people want to change them. she says it's a beautiful moment, and a celebration; a claiming of a new identity, or a reclamation of an old identity. she encourages the room to clap for folks. then she welcomes everyone up, one by one, by last name and with warmth; she shows them the court order where nobody else can see, asks them to double check the spelling, and then they're done! do they want a picture? do they want their friends and loved ones who came with them to be in it too? do they want the court order in the photo? she helps everyone pose, shakes hands and stands with them for as long as they need to take it, recruits the clerk for help taking photos of the folks who came alone. then she tells them where to go next, congratulates them, and claps along with the rest of the room.
probably three quarters of the people there were trans, and she centered their experience quietly, with love and joy.
I think I'll be thinking about her a lot this January, and for a long time after. it's good to know she's there.
