Birds of a Feather

Fantastic news about a Laysan albatross named Wisdom, who lives on Midway Atoll in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument.

Wisdom is officially the oldest living marine bird, at least 62 years of age and first banded by wildlife officials in 1956. She survived the tsunami in 2010 that devastated Midway. And now (drumroll, please!) she is caring for what is at least the 30th chick she’s hatched and reared in her long, productive life.

There’s a slim possibility that she’s related to our own Laysan albatross, Makana (pictured above). Like Wisdom, Makana comes from Midway Atoll. She came to the Aquarium in 2006 after she injured her wing when she fledged. She’s been an incredible ambassador for her species and is — as far as we know — the only albatross at any aquarium or zoo in the world.

In daily public programs at the Kelp Forest exhibit, we introduce visitors to Makana. There, we share stories about the epic annual migrations Laysan albatross make (50,000 miles!) and about the threats they face in the wild — from plastic pollution and commercial fishing gear.

Globally 18 of the 22 species of albatross are threatened with extinction. Makana and Wisdom — each in their own way — are contributing to the survival and recovery of these remarkable birds.

We wish them long and healthy lives!

Sue Austin - Creating the Spectacle (2012)

As part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, performance and installation artist Sue Austin created this series in which she—in her self-propelled underwater wheelchair—explored the magnificence of the underwater world, aiming to generate a widespread public debate about the nature and value of contemporary arts practice shaped by the experience of disability.

Artist’s statement: 

“My studio practice has, for sometime, centred around finding ways to understand and represent my embodied experience as a wheelchair user, opening up profound issues about methods of self-representation and the power of self-narration in challenging the nexus of power and control that created the ‘disabled’ as other.”

Interactive installation is grid of transparent LEDs which display halftone and circular patterns whose display can emulate it’s viewers.

A week ago, I covered a New Media exhibition in Seoul called ‘The Da Vinci Ideas Exhibition’ and was intrigued by this piece, hoping there would be a video of it. Well, the brilliant Creative Applications discovered it, which you can watch in the embed below:

Created by Korena collective HYBE, IRIS is a media canvas with matrix of conventional information display technology, that is a monochrome LCD.Through the phased opening and closing of circular black liquid crystal, IRIS can create various patterns and control the amount (size) of passing lights.

From now on, they will remain the anti-Pussy men, fearing & beating down 3 grrrl artists & mothers. Heavenly news, theocrats & thugs of Russia: Mother Mary has heard their dramatic prayer!  "Hooliganism" & "hate of religon" does not fit the alleged "crime" the entire world has witnessed. We see performance artists-musicians-actors, same as Björk, Kerli, Nikki Minaj, Madonna or Lady Gaga. It's A PERFORMANCE... yet in this case it's an actual prayer ceremony too.

 And please explain, where is Christ's forgiveness, His love, His reaching out & protecting women? Instead we see the same Pharisee order who hung Jesus on as cross to "uphold Roman Law."
