Have you thought about Zoeymau recently? Here’s your incentive
There’s only like half the staff that the palace should have because Ozai and Azusa fired/killed/mutilated/scared off/etc. the rest
So they’re all trying their hardest to do their jobs and their terrified of messing up in case he’s just like the rest of his family
They know he’s friends with the Avatar but you can never really be sure
At first they all stay out of his way
Then, a group of younger maids see Zuko and Aang feeding the turtle-ducks
Aang pushes Zuko into the pond and the maids are sure he’s going to set the boy on fire
But instead he just laughs and checks to made sure none of the turtle-ducks are hurt
A few days later, the cook walks into the meal hall to see how everyone’s meal is going
Instead he sees the Firelord in a heated debate about theatre with Suki while Aang, Katara, Toph and Sokka are in the middle of a food-fight
The cook makes the mistake of squeaking indignantly at the sight of his hard work all over thirteen year-old faces
When Zuko notices him he quiets the other teenagers down and apologises for the mess, the others quickly following his lead
Over time, the sergeants come to realise that the new Firelord is just a regular child
An eccentric child who owns a third of the entire world, but a child
By the time Zuko turns seventeen, the entire staff has warmed to him, even the new employees who had heard rumours about what Zuko’s predecessers did
He’s genuinely kind to them and interested in their lives in a way that they’d never experienced before, especially not from a noble
Eventually it became normal for Zuko to be found in the kitchen teaching servants how to make good quality tea
Zuko also offered hugs to them
Many of them had lost people to the war, and at first he did it as a way to comfort them
He was stiff and had obviously never done it before but the servants loved that he cared about them enough to step out of his comfort zone
He was also warm and very comfortable once he relaxed
The younger, bolder servants took advantage of this by hugging him whenever they could
At first it was when Zuko was alone, then one servant accidentally hugged him when he was in front of the Gaang
Sokka and Toph thought it was hilarious
Katara and Aang joined the hug
Suki comforted the servant after she freaked out and started crying
When Zuko adopted Druk, the entire staff helped raise him
Whenever they have the chance, Ellie and Joel get matching clothes, usually sweatshirts.
The best places to find new ones are remote gift shops that haven't been picked over yet, but they will take anything they can get their hands on, starting a small collection. It's not clear who had the idea first, but they both love it more than they're willing to admit for exactly the same reason - it makes them look like a family, and, more specifically, the package deal they are. They don't actively coordinate their outfits, but if one of them wears a shirt they both have, the other one races to change as soon as they see it.
Everyone else finds it fucking adorable, not that anyone except Tommy would actually be brave enough to say it to their faces, but the people in Jackson like Joel and Ellie more than they know; it's the way they look at each other, really, the bubble of fondness surrounding them wherever they go.
Identical shirts pose one problem though, mostly for Joel. When they're scattered around their house, left on the couch or in his bed, slung over a kitchen chair, it's hard to see what size it is. Ellie loves wearing Joel's shirts, glowing with something adorably childlike whenever she does, but Joel cannot wear hers, and he has gotten stuck in them while trying to pull them on in a hurry more than once.
He complains to Tommy about it (with the biggest fucking smile, and his brother cannot for the life of him take his annoyance seriously), but he still comes up with a solution. After collecting all of their matching shirts, he commandeers their living room and stitches their initials where the clothing tag should be (Ellie hates them, they're itchy, so she cut them off). His embroidery is great, he even makes sure to use the right color schemes, and numb fingertips are worth the crushing hug Ellie gives him afterwards.
(She still steals Joel's shirts, just because she can.)
Look, you can pry the concept of Camila, Darius and Eda having a support group for parents of ‘should be extinct kids’ out of my cold, dead hands.
Obviously based on this iconic image:
Artist Zuko really is one of the best things in the world!!😍
HE IS!! I love the idea of it being therapeutic for him (hence his characterization in All the Lights are Shining). I also love the idea of him just being super casual about it. I headcanon that it was something he had to learn as part of his formal education like all of the other noble kids, but he just became exceptional at it. His mother encouraged him (of course) and Iroh continued to do so once Zuko was in his care. So Zuko is just like, “Yeah. This is a skill I was required to learn, but it’s also one of my favorite hobbies and it helps me work through all of my emotions and trauma. And I guess I’m kind of decent at it?”
Also, when the Gaang finds out he can draw, Suki and Toph mercilessly tease Sokka about how much better an artist Zuko is than him. And Katara and Aang want Zuko to teach them how to draw. They keep asking him and he finally relents. It turns out Aang is pretty decent, but Katara is just as bad as Sokka. Zuko is just perplexed by that because Katara excels at so many things, so how is she so bad at this?
(I just have a lot of ideas surrounding artist!Zuko. 🥰)
If you're still taking TOH requests, would you draw Darius, maybe bonding with either Hunter or Eber? He's one of my absolute favorite characters too!
I NEED MORE DARIUS!!!! I get the feeling we might've gotten more of his backstory had we not been robbed of season 3.... Like, why he and Amity's dad fell out of friendship, his relationship with the old golden guard. There's so much mystery left to explore!!!!! TAT!!
And with those kind of themes being played out on the kid main characters too, I could totally see an episode meant to happen where the show deals with an adult having to come to terms with old burned bridges.
Like how Willow and Amity became friends again. But imagine it between adults, y'know? That has held these feelings for so much longer. The drama. It is so... juicy!!!!
AND HIS "I TOTALLY DONT CARE" ATTITUDE BUT HE TOTALLY SO DOES CARE!!!
Adult characters that is like "lmao I hate everyone and these children annoy me" and then wind up being their designated best parent is... ... one of my fave tropes...
I am.. weak... for this character type.
I love him. TTATT!!! Dariiuusss!!!!
First Jetkotara fanart ever and I'm really proud of it 💕
[ID: Looking at the image from left to right: Jet, Zuko and Katara are on a couch relaxing together. Zuko and Jet are sitting close, looking at a copy of Love Amongst the Dragons that Zuko is reading aloud. Katara is lying down looking up at Zuko, with her head on his legs. All of them are wearing a pair of dark trousers in different shades (burgundy, dark brown, dark purple) and a shirt. Katara and Zuko have long untied hair. Jet has his left arm around Zuko's shoulder, his hand on top of Katara's, that is holding Zuko's hand. End ID]
The servants are just so terrified by him at the beginning?? Because here is this obviously powerful fire bender, the avatars fire bending teacher, and their fire lord and he is literally the most unpredictable person ever in their eyes
Every other fire lord was at least a little predictable bc staff knew what fire lords and fire nation royalty acted like but here is this guy over here who never yells at them?? Who never hurts them?? Who never banishes or fires them??
The first time they ever saw him angry/disappointed at staff was when he was telling the cooks to never make roast turtleduckling ever again he doesn’t care how tender they are thank you very much
When he has to deal with a particularly condescending or war mongering general or politician that day, he’ll sneak off to the kitchens and just make rage tea
If someone doesn’t remind him to eat he just forgets?? So the Head Cook, a woman everyone can agree on is the meanest, toughest, strictest person around, sends food to him every few hours no matter how many times he’s told her in person she doesn’t need to
Zuko will just casually let slip some really horrifying fact and the staf will just be very disturbed bc your grANDFATHER ORDERED YOUR DEATH
“Oh yeah, but my mom killed him so it’s okay”
*distressed noises from background staff*
They are slowly beginning to piece together everything that happened to their fire lord during his exile using their combined knowledge from off hand comments they heard Zuko make
Lu Ten, shatters a window and climbs through it:
Lu Ten, turns around and helps Baby Zuko through it: Breaking and entering is wrong Zu.
Baby Zuko: Okay.
