Solar System: Things To Know This Week

Solar System: Things to Know This Week

In addition to the Mercury transit of the sun today, there are a few other things you should know about our solar system this week:

1. Mars, Ready for its Close-Up

image

Mars will soon be closer to Earth than it has been for 11 years, presenting a great opportunity for backyard sky watchers.

2. Fire and Ice

image

Our spacecraft have an even closer view of Mars, and that fact regularly leads to some intriguing discoveries. The latest: volcanoes may have erupted beneath an ice sheet there billions of years ago. The above image is a mineral map of part of the Martian surface.

3. Icy Hydra

image

Meanwhile, our New Horizons spacecraft has sent home the first compositional data about Pluto’s four small moons. The new data show the surface of Hydra is dominated by nearly pristine water ice–confirming hints that scientists picked up in images showing Hydra’s highly reflective surface.

4. Ceres, Ever Sharper

image

The mission director for our Dawn mission writes, “Ceres, which only last year was hardly more than a fuzzy blob against the stars, is now a richly detailed world, and our portrait grows more elaborate every day.”

5. Join us at Jupiter

image

Our Juno mission arrives at the giant planet on Jul. 4. Meanwhile, all amateur astronomers are invited to take part in a worldwide effort to identify potential observations for the spacecraft to make once it’s in orbit. Find out how to join HERE.

Sleepy Thoughts #6

Friday, August 4th, 8:20 AM: I don't want to go to work You ever have a dream that's just so lovely and comfy and just feels so right, that when your alarm goes off you lay there for an extra 10 minutes trying to get some more of it back?

I agree with 99.9% of this.

I hate Donald Trump, and I disagree with 95% of the words that leave his mouth. I don’t care too much for Hillary, and I understand the concern about her scandals. I love Bernie, and while as much as I genuinely hope that he had a shot at the presidency, I’m just doubtful that he’d be able to beat Hillary, let alone Trump. I’m torn between feelings of Hillary’s potential indictment. Part of me says yes, because then Bernie will hopefully be able to run, but that part of me says no because she has more of a chance at beating Trump. But also, statistically the presidency goes from democrat to republican to democrat to republican, so it is more likely that a republican will be president, i.e. Trump. The only potentially positive part that could come out of having a republican president and congress, is that they could finally work together, instead of congress blocking everything the president tries to do. However, the republicans themselves don’t really like Trump, so who knows if progress would even be made in that regard?

Either way, I’m definitely voting democrat in this election, because if Trump is elected I’m probably going to cry. Definitely going to cry. A lot. He would hopefully be able to at least do something for our economy, given the businessman that he is. And maybe since the republicans don’t like him, they could just block him for four years then we got Kanye 2020, right? I want to see Bernie run again, but he’s already 74 and I just don’t know.

Who am I kidding, I’m probably just gonna write in Vermin Supreme.

Political thoughts from someone who knows nothing about it (I warned you)

I like Bernie Sanders a lot. I don’t think that he’ll be president. It would be really, really cool if he was. I just don’t think it’s going to happen. I will vote for him in the primary though. If anything, I think the outpouring of support towards his campaign is inspiring and hopefully proof of the inevitability of a political revolution to come. I don’t hate Hillary Clinton. I think you’re supposed to on the internet though. I’ve heard and read about the reasons she is a crooked politician. And I think that is bad. I guess you could say “but all politicians are” but it’s also possible she is worse than the other ones. Or maybe she really isn’t that much worse and the intense focus on her flaws are sexist in nature. That sentence probably made someone angry, though. It’s somewhat depressing that the first likely female presidential nominee turned out to be someone a large amount of people seem to intensely dislike. Like, smart people even. Feminists and stuff. They hate her. I think. I think the backlash towards her is legitimate in many ways. Some of it annoys me though. There is just a percentage of it that I find to be disingenuous. I think some of our generation is critical of her because they (we) are addicted to hate. Hating and calling out. I think hate is very popular right now. It’s fun. And it’s largely a defense mechanism to the exposure we now have to worldwide suffering. It’s a lot easier and much less emotionally exhausting to pick a few famous people a week for everyone to scream at than to spend time concentrating on and recognizing the part you undoubtedly play in the systematic inequality and suffering happening all around you. Because you do play a part. A real part. A part that if you fully understood you would most likely have a breakdown. So instead you scream at Azealia Banks. And that’s not to say there aren’t people out there who can participate in call out culture while simultaneously being aware and recognizing their own flaws and/or privilege. There’s just a good amount of people that I think don’t. Including me probably. I do it too. Why would I ever look inward when I can just let everyone know that I still think Trump sucks and then just call it a day? I’m not racist, he is! But we both are. Probably. He just is more than me. I hate Trump. I really think I hate him. I know on a humanistic level tnay he’s a person just like me but I genuinely find him to be someone I wish wasn’t allowed to talk anymore. He’s a dangerous force. He’s shining a light on terrible things and it’s horrifying to watch. And I can’t even imagine what it’s like for a minority in this country to hear him Especially a young one. That makes me want to cry. So those are my thoughts. Feel free to get mad at me. I honesty don’t know what I’m talking about. But in summary, I will vote for Hillary if/when she is the nominee against Trump. My friend said to me the other day, “If a white person genuinely thinks that a Hillary presidency is worse than a Trump presidency, that’s the definition of privilege”. I don’t know if she made it up or heard it from somewhere. But it feels true to me. Bye and please don’t scream at me. Actually you can. Just stop screaming so much. Do it a little less.

Sleepy Thoughts #2

Friday, May 20, 2016 1:33 AM: Took a sleeping pill two hours ago and yet my mind still doesn’t want to go to sleep

I just saw a video on Facebook about a very obese cat who was learning to swim in an effort to lose weight and it made me feel very sad for the cat. Like, is the cat so fat that it can’t do things that cats do? I’ve heard of cats that get so fat that they can’t groom themselves properly, or be as agile as they used to be, and doesn’t that make them feel sad? Can cats feel sad? I have two cats, one is fat, and when he’s stealing the leftover pizza crust and doritos from my desk, does he realize that he’s only contributing to his downfall? Or is the emotional joy that he gains from eating these treats, and stealing the food from my much smaller cat, simply too enjoyable for him to stop? Do cats feel joy? Do cats realize the basics of cause and effect? The world may never know.

Museum of Living Statues Pt. 5

TRIGGER WARNING: Character death, manipulation, and creepy ending.

This was my final project for my creative writing class, and I was pleased with how it turned out, so please enjoy!

I heard a click and the hum of the suction coming from the machine, and I attempted to breath steadily through my nose to calm myself down. As I breathed out slowly, I took in a massive gulp of air as the hose was suddenly shoved down my throat. I gagged reflexively and my eyes shot open just in time to see the receptionist calmly flip a second switch on the machine and almost instantly my vision went blurry as a thick, acrid liquid flooded down my esophagus. Instinctively I attempted to breathe and only managed to change the course of the liquid as it flowed into my windpipes, then my lungs. The receptionist glanced up at me in my state of panic and clicked their tongue.

“Now dear, I thought I told you to close your eyes. You wouldn’t want to burn them, would you? That would be awfully painful.” They reached up to the steaming hot bucket positioned over me, and gave the chain dangling from it a swift yank. I shut my eyes just in time before the boiling hot wax covered my entire body, not that shutting my eyes helped protect myself from the unimaginable pain that followed. As I attempted to scream, the shooting, burning sensation in my chest and throat intensified and the liquid spluttered as I choked and gagged. The burning hot wax now sat on my skin, and when I attempted to open my eyes I found that they had been glued shut by the thick substance. My mind began to grow fuzzy and I felt myself drifting, unable to see, feel, smell, or taste anything other than the foul liquid. My ears strained to hear anything through the thick wax that now clogged them. I felt pressure on my left cheek and heard a soft voice speak to me.

“There there my dear, that wasn’t so hard was it?” they cooed, their voice lulling me into the sleep that my body was calling for, “Look how beautiful you are!”

“Welcome, everyone, to the grand opening of our new exhibit!” The receptionist spread their arms open wide, and their smooth voice rang through the crowd. “This new collection is based off of simple, everyday people, just like all of you! Now, without further ado.” They held up their scissors, and made a spectacle of cutting the red ribbon that marked the entrance to the new exhibit. The crowd applauded, and people began to pour in to appreciate the detailed wax figures. In particular, there was one pair of people with pudgy bellies and crooked teeth who stood out from the rest. While the rest of the crowd took their time looking around them at the beautiful figures that all wore similar expressions of terror, this couple shoved through the crowd while looking around wildly.

“There, honey! I found it!” The woman said to her partner as she ran ahead, coming to a halt in front of a statue wearing an expression of sorrow. The mother paused, cupping her hand over her mouth as she struggled not to cry. Her partner caught up and rested their hand comfortingly upon her shoulder. The mother reached up to stroke the beautiful waxy cheek that once belonged to her child, while the receptionist watched closely from among the crowd.

“I’m so sorry, sweetie.” The mother said as a tear escaped down her cheek. “But Jesse really wants braces.”

I don’t really think anyone has read this, but it still makes me feel good to have something I’m proud of out there in the open, and hopefully at least one person cares. Thank you for reading!
