Through the night, sleep eluded you. Hours of tossing and turning ended with you arriving at work two hours early. The establishment hadn’t even opened yet, security bots were still roaming around the empty halls patrolling for trespassers.
You yawned, scanning your security card on the sensor outside of the daycare. As much as you hated to admit it, you still loved this place. It was home away from home and deep in your chest you had begun to feel a longing for a certain bright eyed animatronic.
The two beeps echoed, signaling your permitted entrance. You pushed the glass doors open and clicked on the generator, looking around for your companion. “Sunny?” You called into the childlike wonderland. “I know I’m early, but I didn’t take you for the kind to sleep.”
You didn’t know that he had witnessed, or even took part in the events of last night. You had honestly thought about keeping the experience from him, it brought him down to hear what his counterpart had done. It always caused a visible difference when he was with the kids.
Sunny had been lounging on the balcony, whispering back and forth with Moon. He hadn’t even heard the doors open, if you hadn’t said anything- he wouldn’t have known you were there. He perked up when he heard your voice, instantly jumping down into the ball pit. “Good morning, Doll!”
A smile etched onto your face as you leaned against the counter. “Good morning, Sunny!” You greeted in return, busying yourself with whatever you could while he took his sweet time. Slowly, your eyes wandered as you awaited his arrival. You quickly locked onto the couch from last night, a shiver running down your spine. “Moon..” you whispered, barely above the sound of a sigh.
Sunny wiggled his way out of the ball pit, a few balls rolling out as he stood- before skipping across the room to where you stood. “What did you say?” He asked, attention zeroed in on you.
You blanked, feeling heat rush to your cheeks. “Oh nothing, it’s not important.” You smiled, running a hand through your hair. “How was your night?” You made the decision to change the subject, but little did you know- Sunny was one step ahead of you.
“I saw what happened last night.” He blurted, skipping through the niceties. He knew he may have just crossed a line, broken a barrier between the two of you, but he needed to know. He needed you to know.
You felt your heart skip a beat, “You did?” Your voice was quiet, barely audible as you stared up at the animatronic who towered over you.
Sunny nodded, eyes gently narrowed as he shifted from foot to foot. He wasn’t used to this feeling. This nervousness. He genuinely didn’t think he could have these emotions, it wasn’t within his programming to feel anything other than happiness.
“I was scared for a moment, I thought he was going to hurt me. I didn’t know if I was going to be walking out of here in one piece.” You admitted, stepping away from Sunny to wander towards the main play area. “But, he didn’t. He didn’t even look like he wanted to.”
Sunny took this as a cue to follow, he nodded along as you spoke. Internally, we wanted to tell you Moons thoughts. The emotions that were awakened when he came across you last night. Rationally, he knew that this was something that wasn’t his to tell and he feared that if he did let it slip- Moon would act out to try to deny these feelings. “What did you feel? I mean, since you weren’t fearing for your life and all.” The happy tone within his programming made the question sound more like an answer.
You shook off the side tracked thoughts, thinking back to last night. “Well, I was scared but not for my life. For Moon. Something honestly seemed wrong.” Your words seemed to fall off of your tongue before you could stop them.
This revelation caught Sunny and Moon’s attention.
“Scared for Moon?” His voice held a spark of curiosity behind his words, every syllable seemed to urge you to go on.
The sun was now shining through the tall daycare windows, making the colors from the plastic slides and jungle gym shine like they were brand new. It was too pure here for such talk, so hesitantly you answered his question. “Moon seemed distraught. Distracted. Like something else was happening within his head. He didn’t even try to chase me, hunt me, hurt me.” A wondrous tone edged into your voice, accompanied with a disbelieving laugh.
Sunny stayed silent, his opaque eyes taking in the visible bruises on your forearms. As much as he wanted to encourage you to interact with Moon- he was terrified for your safety. Moon was unstable and unpredictable, he could snap before anyone could ever see it coming. He didn’t want to see you hurt anymore.
The silence began to seep into your mind, the deafening sound making your chest ache.
“Sun?”
He snapped himself out of his daze, looking down at you dutifully. “Yes, doll?”
“Thank you.”
Sunny couldn’t help himself, he brought his hands down to cup your face- tenderly using the soft pads of his synthetic thumbs to brush against your cheeks. He dipped down and pressed his lips against your own, subduing the mental anguish head been battling due to the recent events.
You were completely caught off guard, Sunny had never done anything quite this physical before. Sure a hug, a handshake, even the occasional hug- but never this. His lips were softer than you thought a robots could be, in the back of your mind you had to remind yourself that he was built to help caretake for the children- which included kissing tender wounds on little ones to help them feel better, so you just pushed the surprise away.
He pulled away first, he knew that humans needed to breathe and he didn’t want to accidentally kill you. He leaned down to press his cool metal forehead against your own, taking in the moment before all was lost.
You giggled, huffing lightly to regain your composure. “What was that for?”
Sunny stepped away, his usual peppy smile gracing his face. “It was just for you.”
Before you could get another word in, he was already halfway across the room- headed to the security doors. Part of you wanted to follow him and see where he spends most of his time- but you knew that door specifically required level nine security clearance and there was no way your card would suffice.
“Bye then!” You shouted, a bit bummed by the new lack of his presence.
Sunny was happy, genuinely happy. Yet, as soon as he had kissed you- he felt a anger within him. An emotion that wasn’t his own. Something foreign. He decided that he needed to confront the source. Moon.
The rage was bubbling inside of him like a can of Fizzfaz after being shaken. It was unstoppable, the change he felt coming couldn’t be stopped. Moon was coming out whether he liked it or not. He was moving as inconspicuously as possible to get out of the daycare center as fast as possible to not alert you to the problem.
He had barely made it inside the door when the ache began in his eyes. It began to take over his entire body, he could barely suppress the groans of pain coming from his mouth as hands ripped the Sun from his face. Revealing only the crescent moon.
Moon stood, cracking the metal back into place as he stalked over to the mirror. His eyes flickered before taking on their deep red hue. “It’s time for you,” he pointed into the mirror, knowing Sunny could hear him. “and me, to have a talk.”
Sunny echoed into Moon’s consciousness, “About?” He was unsure, this couldn’t be about the kiss- could it?
“Her.”
