oh nothing, just thinking about George Russell and how his story is equally as tragic as some other drivers’ but just as himself, sometimes it goes unnoticed…

thinking about little teenager George sitting in his father’s car, listening to the verbal abuse and frustration hurling at him after a bad result. head down, quiet and stern, swearing to be better, to be good enough next time.

thinking about George, just 16 years of age, showing up to a meeting with Toto Wolff and the Mercedes executives, all alone, nervous, hands sweaty, with nothing but determination and a Power Point presentation, trying to convince them, to make them see that he's good enough.

thinking about George, now a Mercedes junior driver, back-to-back F3 and F2 champion, at that time only the second driver to ever achieve something like that, Formula 1 bound, Mercedes' future and next big thing.

thinking about George, hopeful and wanting to prove himself, being promised the Mercedes seat by Toto and then getting the Williams seat instead and even that, just barely. bitter and left thinking, maybe if he had done better...

thinking about George, now in F1, but not where he was promised to be, nonetheless, relentlessly trying his best, still trying to prove himself, while watching his peers in top teams achieve their dreams, the same dreams he had as well.

thinking about George, finally getting a chance to prove himself in a Mercedes, something he's fought for his entire life, ending up P9, disappointed and powerless, thinking, yet again that he wasn't good enough.

thinking about George, getting the second Mercedes seat, after years of fighting and proving his worth to Toto and to everyone else around him, finally feeling like he was good enough.

thinking about George, now a Mercedes driver, although always the second best, but it's okay, because he's racing alongside the very best, he's teammates with the best driver in the history of Formula 1 and he understands.

thinking about George, ambitious, calculated and relentless, now a race winner, making a name for himself, fighting against the very best in the world, he is one the very best in the world; he's. finally. good. enough.

thinking about George, his teammate set to depart from the team at the end of the season, finally getting the opportunity to step up as a leader, but still being questioned if he's ready, if he's good enough by the media and by his own team principal.

thinking about George, now the driver with the most experience in the team, ready to lead, to be the driver that scared, but somehow confident 16 year old kid promised he could be, giving it his all for the team he always wanted to be a part of.

thinking about George, now a multiple race winner, experienced and widely respected, suddenly alongside a kid, just barely 18 years of age, nurtured, supported and admired by Toto Wolff himself, getting the treatment he never got, but always yearned for, despite all his hard work and dedication.

thinking about George Russell, an incredibly talented driver, driven, scarily intelligent and cunning, on and off track, just wanting to be acknowledged by the one person he looked up to, by the team he fought to be in, watching them prepare their future number one driver, while he's still in the team. is he really that easily replaceable?

thinking about George Russell, consistently performing, fighting for podiums, almost P3 in the world championship standings, seen as one of the best drivers on the grid, but somehow still not being good enough in the eyes of the people that matter the most to him.

I’m biased so I’m aware of how unhinged this sounds like, but my biggest annoyance over Kimi joining the team is just the favouritism since day one.

We’ve had to endure months of Toto publically going after Max and Kimi, which severely undermines George. To this day there’s still rumblings of this, but since Kimi was confirmed, it’s been obvious he’s been Toto/Mercedes favourite. It annoys me when there’s immediately a post of Kimi ‘breaking’ some sort of record for being the youngest ever.. well I’m sorry he’s in the most competitive car out of the rookies, and it’s stat padding. This would never happen with George (in fact it’s been years before Merc social even remotely acknowledged him in a positive way) Now Kimi has even got his own Netflix/Whatsapp documentary so it’s obvious once again George isn’t the priority within the team. What more does he have to do to even remotely get a crumb of postive acknowledgement from Toto!

F1 influencers are the worst thing to happen to Formula 1. They are responsible for 95% of the hate teams and drivers get. Parroting things they hear in commentary (regardless of whether it was proved wrong later) or just taking another influencers hot take that got good numbers and running with it.

And don’t even get me started with the young girls who follow these treads. Because all it does is fuel men to reinforce their view women aren’t entitled to an opinion in F1.

I know there is the potential for great content to be out there. I’ve seen it. Fans posting and explaining telemetry. Fans who diligently post full quotes when driver’s interviews are taken out of context. Hell some of the stuff I’ve done reaching back into F1’s history and how it has evolved into what we see now. (Which I won’t lie is very much the approach of Josh Revell - who’s content always comes with the attitude this could age like cheese in the sun ok, just don’t be a dick about it or to each other).

People know how to form an opinion based on data and radio messages and probability, not what they wanted to happen and didn’t do now need someone to blame. They are just not the ones who seem to be making content.

I’ve seen on account today complaining that Jacques Villeneuve needs to get off her screen. You know Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve. Son of F1 legend Giles Villeneuve. His insight into a race is going to be far more valuable than anything a tiktoker or YouTuber is going to produce. You don’t have to agree with him, but at least respect his right to that opinion, whether you want to hear it or not!

And don’t even get me started on some of the post race “gradings”. I’m now certain they are 1000% ragebait.

Don’t get me wrong, there is some good content being made. Some factual, some humorous. There is just too much out there of people talking to a knowledgeable F1 community with the aura of walking into Apple and saying “I can’t even code” 🤷‍♀️. And they sadly seem to be the ones getting numbers and fuelling hate campaigns against drivers. Hence why I’ve stopped engaging with most of them.

I get lots of you don’t like toto but let’s stop pretending like he hated/hates Lewis and all that bad blood shit etc. he’s tried lots of times to explain how he feels about Lewis going to Ferrari and like yeah he knew something like that might happen eventually, yeah he doesn’t have to like it, yeah he can be relieved he’s not the one calling time on Lewis’s retirement, yeah he can still be excited for Lewis, him describing it like an amicable divorce might be a bit odd but he’s trying to describe how it feels in a way people might get… god forbid the man is allowed real people feelings.
