The Rose of Versailles movie was so bad I don’t know how I endured those two hours. The animation was fairly good but the plot and its pacing were horrendous.
Sure, I must admit it’s hard to summarize such a long story. However, the whole movie watered down every theme that made this manga so good, and overall it was boring as hell.
I knew it was doomed starting with the erasure of the beef Marie Antoinette had with Du Barry. But the movie failed in many other ways:
Oscar’s internal conflict about her gender identity is completely erased, and her attraction toward Fersen is so unnoticeable that if I hadn’t read the manga I probably wouldn’t have picked up on it. Andre’s problematic behavior is also removed to such an extent that I almost felt empathy toward him, which is not a good thing.
Most importantly, I hate how they reduced the sapphic side of the story. Oscar’s love for Marie Antoinette was so underdeveloped that I barely cared when they parted ways. Honestly, I understand why Rosalie was left out of this mess but she’s essential to Oscar’s development. I mean, she’s the one who triggers her empathy for the people and sets her on the path toward getting involved in the French Revolution, which here felt like it happened out of nowhere.
Ultimately, the treatment of the Revolution itself is so superficial it’s unbearable. What do you mean they didn’t even mention the Affair of the Diamond Necklace, the literal scandal that sparked the insurrection?
The saddest thing is that all the elements to make a good and entertaining movie were there, but instead, all those plot points were thrown into an overload of unnecessary musical montages…
kind of obsessed with this tbh
Worth your eddies !

if I had a nickel for every time seth green played the nice boyfriend of the bookish, nerdy girl who fights supernatural beings with her group of friends (called the scooby gang) led by her pretty but badass best friend (played by sarah michelle gellar) before she eventually came out as a lesbian, I'd have two nickels.
why is it always the fancylad boy-king type whos the bottom. maybe his tough loyal knight who uses his body to protect and defend him and lives to serve him wants to get railed
I’ll never forgive my mom for introducing me to Jane Eyre at the ripe age of 12 because now there’s irreversible damage
You're in her dps (direct pigeons) while I'm her family's castle and she's showing me her ankles. We are not the same.
