Taking a female character who belongs to a non-majority group of bigger, muscular women in a video game and making her a very skinny person in the TV show adaptation of said video game is problematic and worthy of (respectful) criticism and I’m tired of pretending it’s not. Because the creators of the TV show said they specifically offered the actor who plays this character the part. She even said she didn’t even have to audition in an interview, she was offered the role with no audition for it. No hate to this actor, she’s amazing, she’s out here working, I don’t blame her at all. But they also did not have other actors (or if they did, very few) read for the part.

But I am so sick of people acting like the character’s original physique doesn’t matter. It DOES MATTER. Media has power, and purposefully erasing a part of a character’s physical identity that aligns her with a group of women who are either grossly misrepresented in traditional media or just cut out of it completely IS harmful. And the fact that they used her physicality to market the second game so heavily and then abandon it when the reception wasn’t good for the TV show is SO problematic. Bigger women are not there to simply be movement devices for your plot and aesthetic choices. People who are bigger matter, and having representation of bigger women fucking matters.

Guys idk how to say this but stop hating Owen sm 😭 he’s literally one of the most sympathetic and level headed characters in the game. Like just bc you like Abby (or Mel?) doesn’t mean you can’t try to understand him. If it wasn’t for him, the rest of the SLC wanted to kill Ellie and Tommy, he’s the only one that spoke up to save them. He’s gone through similar traumatic experiences as Abby but chose a different path. He’s Abby’s foil line Dina is to Ellie. He tries to support Abby and understand her but she’s ultimately too caught up in her revenge goal that their relationship crumbles. they have a strong relationship too and their method of joking with eachother is deprecating and teasing eachother, and getting mad on her behalf doesn’t make much sense either. They have their own backstory and way of affection that Abby isn’t even mad about, she giggles and smiles at all of Owen’s jokes. Abby clearly cares about him throughout the game even writing that letter to him. Just writing him off and dumbing him down to Abby’s trash male love interest never sits right with me because he has a purpose in the story and he’s a great and layered character.

why tf are all the ellie / abby fics either about them being mad abusive or reader that acts like a fucking baby..

i genuinely mourn over how LITTLE salt lake crew content we got. like we didn’t even hear nick or leah talk 💔 the things i would do for even just the earliest concepts of them as a group..

if you incorrectly headcanon abby/want her to be mean, evil, toxic and abusive please block me because you’re disgusting. why are you people on this app so derranged. the things y’all write about are not normal and abby would hate you

“abby shouldn’t have tortured joel/abby should’ve made it quick” have you never considered maybe she (and the rest of the salt lake crew) wanted him to experience all the pain he caused at saint mary’s? not just her dad’s pain or her own grief but everyone else’s, too?

There is an ache DEEP IN MY CORE that can only be satisfied by being held in abby’s arms. G O D.
