Your Questions Got Me Thinking And Realizing That I Have Additional Questions:

Your questions got me thinking and realizing that I have additional questions:

Szeth is likely going to summon his spren as a sword eventually. Is it going to make Nightblood jealous? Will they see it as a way to destroy twice as much evil? Szeth dual wielding blades? Or Nightblood getting frustrated because Szeth really needs a long spear for a sky battle right now and he is using the sprenspear instead of a sword?

Or, would Szeth summon his spren as a shield while using Nightblood as a sword?

What is the conversation going to be like when Nightblood and the spren talk?

Or, y’all, Szeth and Nightblood and the spren in a sort of threeway poly nahel bond. Maybe the bond could dampen the spiritual cracks in Nightblood so that they don’t automatically suck all of the investiture out of anyone holding them?

I wonder what it’s like to be Szeth’s spren.  Like, the only thing they have to do is stick close enough that he can surgebind.  Nightblood takes care of everything else.  Did some Highspren just go: “This is gonna be the easiest assignment ever heck yeah” and then sleep through the rest of the book?  Are they annoyed at not having anything to do?  Were they tired of working with more conventional Skybreakers?  What do they think of Szeth siding with Dalinar over Nale?

I have questions guys

(Probably Crazy) Nightblood Theory

So, I just had a probably crazy idea.

What if Nightblood isn't actually completely native to Nalthis? What if Nale is bringing it back home when he gives it to Szeth? Nightblood could have been a Rosharian Shardblade (Szeth doesn't seem to question it being a shardblade) that ended up on Nalthis. Then when Vashar and Shashara awakened it, the process roused the dead/trapped spren in the shardblade.  From what we have seen,  spren require an active bond with a human to remain sentient in the physical realm.  Awakening would interact strangely with this resulting in the spren needing a steady supply of breath to remain active.  This could provide an explanation for why it sucks the breath out of people (something that is never really explained in Warbreaker).

Nightblood's inability to fully understand what evil is and place it in a human context runs reasonably parallel to Pattern and Syl's attempts to understand the more abstract concepts of the human world.  In Nightblood's case, the spren is still trapped in the sword and since it doesn't have a proper bond with a person, it is even harder for it to learn, so it can't progress as well or as quickly as Pattern and Syl.

The more I think about this the better it is working...

Welcome to the 2015 Cross Cosmere Rithmatics Olympiad!

The other night in FNCC I brought up the question of what would happen if someone drew a chasmfiend chalkling.  Things snowballed from there and dm-mo, ElderDragonMystic and I got carried away.  As a result, our friends from across the Cosmere are gathering to compete in games derived from one of Sanderson’s non-Cosmere magic systems.

Welcome to the 2015 Cross Cosmere Rithmatics Olympiad!  Teams are gathering from across the Cosmere to compete in an exciting assortment of rithmatic events! The games will be kicking off soon and we here at the Cosmere Chronicle will follow the action when they do, but in the mean time let’s introduce the teams.

Roshar is fielding three teams this year.

The first is their traditional team from the Alethkar Academy of Rithmatics.  This team’s roster is formed of brothers Adolin and Renarin Kholin, their cousin Elhokar Kholin, and Shallan Davar, a young woman who hails from Jah Keved.  As expected, these four all have solid groundings in classical rithmatics and should be a force to reckon with.  Rumor has it that there is some dissension in the group though and that they don’t always work particularly well as a team. It will be interesting to watch them and see how this plays out

The other two teams are a ragtag bunch known only as Bridge 4 that are not associated with the Alethkar Academy.  This motley crew appears to bring together students from nearly all regions of Roshar and has divided itself into a Division 1 and a Division 2 team. The senior team consists of Kaladin “Stormblessed”, Moash, Teft and Sigzil.  The junior team is comprised of Lopen, Rysn, Tien, Lift and Syl and coached by Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor “Rock” of the Unkalaki.  We know very little about the rithmatic background of any of these competitors, but if what we have seen in the practice fields is any indication, they could shake things up - they appear to be bringing a style unlike anything we have seen before.

Scadrial is fielding two teams, one each for Division 1 and Division 2.

Scadrial’s senior team should look familiar to anyone who follows Intra-Cosmere Rithmatics.  It is, as expected, comprised of husband and wife team Elend and Vin Venture as well as The Survivors, Kelsier and Spook.  In case you don’t  usually follow ICR, Scadrial rithmatics is known for working in pairs and they should help make the pairs dueling exciting to watch.  The Ventures work seamlessly together while Kelsier and Spook always seem to be able to recover no matter what mess of a situation they find themselves in.

Oddly enough, Scadrial’s division 2 team has an odd number of competitors: the established duo Wax Ladrian and Wayne and newcomer Marasi Colms.  We caught Marasi to ask her how it is working in rithmatics on Scadrial without a partner. She informed us very matter of factly that she simply hasn’t found the right partner yet, but that there was no way she was going to let that cause her to miss the opportunity to come to the games this year.  Based on the rest of our conversation, we expect her to hold her own in the theory competition.

Sel is also fielding a team for each division.

To form its senior team, Sel held a local preliminary competition where it ended up choosing a pair each from two very different parts of the planet.  It is comprised of Sarene, Hrathen, Shai and Gaotona.  It will be interesting to see how the four members blend their styles for the team portions of the games, but they all seem quite focused and determined to win.  One thing is certain - we can always expect precision from Sel rithmatics.

Sel’s division 2 team is possibly the most unusual team - its captain, Raoden, isn’t actually a Rithmatist!  When we found Raoden to ask about this, he calmly reminded us that one doesn’t have to be a Rithmatist to be a scholar of rithmatic theory. His team is rounded out by a particularly laid back young man named Galladon and an enthusiastic but clearly intelligent girl named Kaise who is, we believe, this year’s youngest competitor.

Political unrest on Nalthis has disrupted its rithmatics program, so it has only sent one team this year.  Veteran Vasher is back and should be a powerhouse in any event he competes in,  though rumors suggest that he may only be here for theory this year.  The team seems to be held together by the lovely princesses of Idris, Vivenna and Sisirinah.  It is rounded out by Siri’s quiet husband Susebron. Keep an eye on Nalthis if you are interested in chalklings.  No one is quite sure how they do it, but in the past we have seen chalklings from the Nalthiean competitors that seem almost sentient.

We here at the Cosmere Chronicle look forward to sharing the Cross Cosmere Rithmatics Olympiad with you in the coming days.  We will bring you the results from the events, analysis of different rithmatic styles, and stories from around Olympic Village.

Last Chance to Pledge for Full Negative Book

Friends. Readers. Fellow nerds with impeccable taste. We are officially in the home stretch. The final 24 hours. The last lap. The dramatic climax of the movie where everything explodes in slow motion and the music swells and someone says something heroic right before punching a fascist in the face. (Okay, that last bit’s just wishful thinking, but after the week we’ve all had, I think we…

My thought process on reading this:

Yeeesssss sibling interatctions!

Mmm, if Lift were Kaladin's little sis, she would be the little sis of all of Bridge 4.  Since Rock is in charge of food, he would be her favorite big bro (or maybe uncle?...hmmm...either way works) and she would hang out around him and try to snitch food constantly.  Rock can see Wyndle and they conspire to try to keep her somewhat in line, but Rock is also never actually mad about her eating.   Sigzil takes it on himself to be her tutor and both starts teaching her to read glyphs and helping her understand her awesomeness by experimenting with it.  Lift isn't thrilled with his tutoring and sneaks off whenever she can. She learns much more about her awesomeness from the games she gets into with Lopen.  She catches Lopen glowing sometime and insists (with much stomping and pouting that isn't actually necessary because Lopen doesn't really need convincing) that he teacher her how to glow because that is so awesome!  At some point he sticks her to the wall and starts to laugh at her but then she becomes awesome and slides down the wall and past him making the bottoms of his shoes awesome as she goes past so that when he tries to turn around he slips and falls.  Lopen is briefly stunned and then bursts out laughing and congratulates her and from then on they are constantly trying to use their powers to get one over on each other.

http://therustyrobot.tumblr.com/post/102898558995/does-anyone-else-really-want-to-see-the-dynamic

does anyone else really want to see the dynamic between kaladin and lift

because I’ve been thinking about it all day and I feel like since most of the radiants so far are pretty tall and lift is. not. she’d want to see what all the tall people were doing so since kaladin’s the tallest she’d end...

Oathbringer Speculation: Timbre

The descriptions of Timbre would fit with the name “lightspren”. We know that she communicates with Venli by pulsing to different rhythms. During the first shadesmar boat trip, Shallan speculates that the Reachers/lightspresn are using vibrations (ie pulses) to communicate.

This suggests that Timbre is a Reacher, but I suspect that she’s not just any Reacher. We meet Ico in Shadesmar and learn that his father is a deadeye and his daughter “ran off chasing stupid dreams”. Then Timbre tells Venli that her own grandfather was lost to human betrayal. Putting all of this together, I strongly suspect that Timbre is Ico’s daughter. I’m not sure what implications this will have for the future. But it’s a thing.

Citations: (Note: Page numbers come from the Kindle edition.)

What was that small spren that had crept out from beneath Eshonai’s corpse? It looked like a small ball of white fire; it gave off little rings of light and trailed a streak behind it. Like a comet. (pg 340)

“The copper vibrates,” Shallan said. “And they keep touching it. I think they might be using it to communicate somehow.” (pg 931)

“Wait!” Adolin said. “Ico, I saw something moving back there.” Ico locked the door and hung the keys on his belt. “My father.” “Your father?” Adolin said. “You keep your father locked up?” “Can’t stand the thought of him wandering around somewhere,” Ico said, eyes forward. (Pg 946)

Ico speaking:  “My daughter used to work there, before she ran off chasing stupid dreams.”  (Pg 948)

Timbre pulsed to Irritation, then the Lost. “That many? I had no idea the human betrayal had cost so many of your people’s lives. And your own grandfather?” (pg 1196)

Potions: A Curious Tale - Adventure through an enchanted world where your wits are your greatest weapon and combat is not always the answer. - http://kck.st/1oIP0qQ

The leading creative director of this project is Renee Gittins. She was a frosh at Harvey Mudd my senior year so while I didn’t know her well, she and I have several mutual friends who are excited about this. From what I’ve seen on the kickstarter, this game looks like it has a lot of potential so I wanted to spread the word.

Shallan's Journey: Chapter 1, In Which an Experiment Goes Wrong

Shallan grimaced as Pattern formed into a sword in her hands. She still wasn't completely comfortable with the idea of wielding a sword, but it was what needed to be done, so she would do it. She, Navani and Jasnah were running experiments on the portals at Urithiru, trying to get a second one open. Prior to Jasnah's return, everyone had been completely stumped, but between the knowledge Jasnah brought back from her time in Shadesmar and her abilities with the transportation surge, she brought new energy to the project. Their current working theory was that they would eventually need Jasnah and Highprince Kalinar working together to permanently reopen a portal, but they wanted to make sure they had things right before Kalinar bound it open. If this worked, Shallan would use the portal to briefly visit Jah Keved and then promptly return to Urithiru. Jasnah was physically sitting in the tower, but was mentally in Shadesmar monitoring and guiding the portal. Shallan slid Pattern into the sword slot and was excited to feel the portal unlock – finally, actual progress! She rotated the fabrial and, as expected the stormlight in the lamps faded. That, however, is where her expectations broke down. As the lamps faded, the room itself seemed to fade until she seemed to be floating in a black void. Once she got past the initial shock she called out “Oh storm it! Pattern, are you still here? Something seems to have gone wrong...do you have any idea where we are?”

Shallan closed her eyes against the overwhelming darkness as she lost her self in the contemplation of what to do next. What would Jasnah do in this situation? She sighed. Jasnah would know how to navigate Shadesmar, and that wasn't something she could do. As Shallan pondered this, she felt a tapping on her shoulder, startled, and whipped her head around hoping to be able to see something in the inky blackness. She was relieved to see pattern glowing gently, “Mmmm, didn't mean to startle... you were getting lost...”

“Well, yes, when we think hard on something we can get lost in those thoughts.”

“Yes. Dangerous here. Lost in thoughts in Shadesmar is lost entirely.”

Shallan considered this. “Pattern, I'm not sure what you mean.”

“Mmmm... Thoughts are Shadesmar... A lie, but a good lie. If you get lost in thought in thoughts you are lost.”

Shallan shook her head. “I'm still not sure I follow, but I'll try to be careful. Do you have any suggestion as to what we should be doing next? How can we get back to Roshar?”

“Look. Your truth is what you see.”

“Look where? Pattern, the only thing I can see is you...”

Pattern took her hand and pointed with it. As Shallan squinted in that direction she could make out... something. At least it wasn't pitch black. “Ok, how do I get there?"

“Mmmm... Lightweavers aren't for traveling... Lie? The best lies become like truth...”

Shallan looked over at Pattern with eyes narrowed in thought as she tried to make sense of what he was saying. “Do you mean that I just need to be sufficiently convinced that I am already there and then I will be?”

“Mmmm.... not sure... perhaps?”

“Well I guess I don't have any better ideas...” Shallan took a deep breath to center herself and tried to focus on believing that she was at that point in the distance that was something other than inky blackness. She quickly realized that as long as she could see that she was still surrounded by darkness, she was not going to be able to truly believe it, so she closed her eyes tightly and tried to block out her skepticism.

Suddenly, she felt herself fall and land on...something...she didn't recognize. When her brain caught up that things had changed and she was once again in a new situation, her eyes snapped open and she quickly sat up. As she looked around, her eyes grew wide – where on Roshar was she? She was definitely outdoors and seemed to be on the ground, but it wasn't any kind of ground she was familiar with. For one thing, whatever vegetation she was sitting on didn't seem even remotely inclined to retreat back into the rock...which...didn't exactly seem like rock, it was too soft. There did appear to be large rocks standing around though... Did she end up somewhere in Shinovar? Shallan knew that they at least had plants that didn't retreat, and maybe this soft stuff was the soil she had read about... She reached into the bag of supplies she had packed in case something went wrong to pull out her sketchbook. Drawing often helped her make sense of what she was seeing. As she did, she thanked the Almighty that her bag hadn't gotten lost somewhere in her unusual journey. That thought reminded her of her traveling companion. She looked around, but didn't immediately see him and, as her heart started racing in panic, she called out, “Pattern? Did... Did you make it here as well?” She was highly relieved to her a sudden buzzing above her and to see Pattern's tangled mass of lines floating down as she looked up.

“Mmmm... still with you... still don't know where here is. Here is a nice pattern though.”

“A pattern?”

“Mmmm... big rocks all around in a circle with rocks on rocks, but maybe some missing.”

Shallan raised her eyebrows as she carefully stood with her bag and sketchbook and began to slowly walk around in wonder investigating the area she had so unceremoniously landed in. She didn't know as much as she wished she did about the Shin, but this seemed like something that might have been sacred to them at one point. It also seemed abandoned and was impressive enough that she should have come across it in her studies. “Pattern... Either we have discovered some long lost sacred site in Shinovar, or...” here she took a deep breath, “or we aren't on Roshar anymore.”

Whrrrrrrrrthwick! Whrrrrrrrrthwick! Whrrrrrrrrthwick! Whrrrrrrrrthwick!

Dumbledore looked up from his desk and frowned at the little silver device that had just started going off. He had many similar devices in his office to alert him of strong magical disturbances at key locations. This one suggested that something significant had just happened at Stonehenge. Thankfully it was just whrrrthwiking - if it had been shrieking that would have meant dark magic and likely that Voldemort had decided to come out of hiding. This, however, was just intriguing. He glanced back down at the paperwork he had been filling out and shrugged. It could wait. He looked over to his phoenix, “Fawkes, my dear old friend, would you be up for a visit to Stonehenge?” Fawkes chirruped and cocked his head. “Something seems to have happened there, and, beyond the fact that I am curious, it would be prudent to investigate.” Fawkes stretched his wings and trilled as flew over to Dumbledore who stood reached out for his tail feathers. They vanished in a flash of fire.

Rithmatics: Part 3, the potential for 8 point defenses

In the previous installments we have covered acute triangles with 3 distinct angles, equilateral triangles, and all right triangle.  In this post we look at acute isosceles triangles.

The Potential for 8 Point Defenses and the Hypothetical Owl Defense

Let's look at what happens when we have an acute isosceles triangle.  The altitude from the different angle will bisect the opposite side, which means the midpoint of the base will count as two points.  However,  the 7 remaining points are all distinct this gives us 8 separate points.

It is interesting to note that, as with the 4 point construction, we have one side of the circle that is tangent to the triangle.  The 4-point Sumsion Defense has a tangent Line of Forbiddance at one of the bind points.  As this is the only defense we know with such a tangent line, it seems reasonable that its existence could be related to the fact that the 4 point circle is the only one we have examples of that has one tangent side with its corresponding triangle. (All three sides of the triangle for the 6 point construction are tangent, but including all of them would trap you - it isn't clear whether it would be a problem to include just one or whether this actually matters at all.  This is something else I hope to ask about at the signing.) Following this logic, I used the Sumsion Defense as starting point for constructing a potential 8 point defense.  It ended up looking rather like an owl :-)

Rithmatics: Part 7, The Incenter and 9 Point Ellipses

In the last post, we determined that the incenter (the intersection of the angle bisectors of the triangle) is probably the most viable center option for constructing 9-point ellipses. Today we will look at what we can get by using different triangles.

The first thing to note is that for an equilateral triangle the incenter is the same as the orthocenter.  This is because the angle bisectors are also the altitudes of the triangle.  This means that the resulting conic is going to be the 6 point circle we are already familiar with.

When we were working with the orthocenter, right triangles gave us special cases because two of the legs of the triangle were also altitudes.  Since we are using angle bisectors instead of altitudes now, right triangles do not form a special case.  In fact, we will never have a situation where a bisector coincides with a triangle side.

Rithmatics: Part 7, The Incenter And 9 Point Ellipses

Another interesting thing to note is that, unlike the orthocenter, the incenter will always be inside the triangle, even if the triangle is obtuse.  This means that obtuse triangles now produce new 9 bind-point patterns.

Rithmatics: Part 7, The Incenter And 9 Point Ellipses

The most interesting case occurs when we look at isosceles triangles. Here, the angle bisector for the different angle also bisects the base of the triangle.  This means that those two points coincide and we end up with 8-point  ellipses.  Furthermore, the  symmetry of the triangle means that the angle bisector of the unique angle will also end up being an axis of the 8-point ellipse.  If the unique angle is smaller than the two matching angles, it will be the major axis.  If it is larger, it will be the minor axis.  Both possibilities have potential strengths and could be used to design useful defenses.

Rithmatics: Part 7, The Incenter And 9 Point Ellipses

Next time we will either go off the deep end with a crazy idea I have for Lines of Warding or we will dive into Lines of Vigor. I haven't decided topic I want to write up next.

Rithmatics: Part 2, the potential for 5 point defenses

In the last post we looked at what happened with acute triangles with three distinct angles, equilateral triangles, and the isosceles right triangle.  In this post we consider non-isosceles right triangles.

The Potential for 5 Point Defenses

Let's consider what happens when we look at non-isosceles right triangles.  As with the 4 point case, the right angle vertex counts as 3 of the 9 points.  The difference here is that the altitude from the right angle vertex no longer bisects the hypotenuse, which gives us a 5th point.  The three side midpoints and the right angle vertex still form a rectangle.  It is interesting to note that the resulting circle has 3 arcs of the same length - the arcs corresponding to the short sides of the rectangle and the one connecting the short leg of the triangle to the hypotenuse.  This seems like it would be important to keep in mind when constructing defenses based on such circles.  Also note that, as with 9 point circles, there are infinitely many variations on the 5 point circle since different right triangles can lead to different bind point spacing.

In the image below I include a speculative idea I've had.  Since there are vertices which count as multiple points in the 9 point construction, it seems from a mathematical perspective like you ought to be able to bind multiple things to this point.  Whether or not this actually works rithmatically is currently unconfirmed. I will hopefully be able to find out at the upcoming Atlanta signing.

Thoughts and Creations

So. I found my way to tumblr when I first discovered Brandon Sanderson's books. As a result, this, my main, was all Sanderson all the time. Tumblr won't let us change which blog is the main blog and my brain won't let me make this blog more general, so you'll find my general tumbling (currently including a great deal of Imperial Radch and Murderbot) on my "side blog" RithmatistKalyna.tumblr.com .
