when was the last time you saw a weevil this big
The largest weevil in North America, the palmetto weevil (Rhyncophorus cruentatus) lays eggs in the crowns of palms, where the grubs feed and often kill their host in the process.
In Florida itโs considered a major pest due to its habit of destroying ornamental palm trees, but native palmettos and sabal palms (the weevilsโ natural hosts) are rarely harmed unless theyโre already stressed or damaged. Itโs mostly date palms and other exotic species planted along city streets that canโt take the heat and need to be drenched with insecticide to ensure survival.

i too am an outlier in this statistic, throwback to that time in 2019 when i drank out of an unsealed water bottle iโd left at my dads house over the week that summer (half renovated barn in australia with no insulation from the outdoors)
didnโt realise a spider had laid her egg sac in the internal straw section til i felt a filmy sac pop inside my mouth 0-0 suffice to say that a wave of baby spiderlings pouring down the back of your throat and out of your open mouth is about as traumatic as it sounds.
โaverage person eats 3 spiders a yearโ factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
- welcome to our native bee garden! over there you can see leafcutter bees slicing leaves to line their nests, and thatโs a carpenter bee hard at work chewing a tunnel for her larvae!
- oh, whatโs that little green one?
- thatโs a swear bee!
- donโt you mean sweat bee?

"oh, humblegrub, how were you able to come up with 50+ favorite bugs off the top of your head?"
it wasn't off the top of my head... I regularly update a 130+ page favorite bugs powerpoint that includes common names, scientific names, pictures, region, and why I love them ๐ณ

My day was made today by finding this rare gorgeous lad spooding around in some leaf litter and oak shoots. He's habronattus alachua - I've only seen 4 adults and I love them. Sweet little fancy lumps. Enjoy. ๐ฅน
