when was the last time you saw a weevil this big

The largest weevil in North America, the palmetto weevil (Rhyncophorus cruentatus) lays eggs in the crowns of palms, where the grubs feed and often kill their host in the process.

In Florida itโ€™s considered a major pest due to its habit of destroying ornamental palm trees, but native palmettos and sabal palms (the weevilsโ€™ natural hosts) are rarely harmed unless theyโ€™re already stressed or damaged. Itโ€™s mostly date palms and other exotic species planted along city streets that canโ€™t take the heat and need to be drenched with insecticide to ensure survival.

i too am an outlier in this statistic, throwback to that time in 2019 when i drank out of an unsealed water bottle iโ€™d left at my dads house over the week that summer (half renovated barn in australia with no insulation from the outdoors)

didnโ€™t realise a spider had laid her egg sac in the internal straw section til i felt a filmy sac pop inside my mouth 0-0 suffice to say that a wave of baby spiderlings pouring down the back of your throat and out of your open mouth is about as traumatic as it sounds.

โ€œaverage person eats 3 spiders a yearโ€ factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

- welcome to our native bee garden! over there you can see leafcutter bees slicing leaves to line their nests, and thatโ€™s a carpenter bee hard at work chewing a tunnel for her larvae!

- oh, whatโ€™s that little green one?

- thatโ€™s a swear bee!

- donโ€™t you mean sweat bee?

[Image ID: An illustrated comic. It pans down water rushing through a creek, into three separate panels depicting sockeye salmon transitioning from their ocean to freshwater phases. They go from a blueish silver into vibrant shades of red and green. At the bottom, a large, brown grizzly bear catches one of the fish in it's maw. Text across the comic reads: "Bless you. Love transforms us. No matter how long it's held in our trembling hands." End ID.]

My day was made today by finding this rare gorgeous lad spooding around in some leaf litter and oak shoots. He's habronattus alachua - I've only seen 4 adults and I love them. Sweet little fancy lumps. Enjoy. ๐Ÿฅน

A drawing of a small yellow/brown grasshopper standing at an angle to the viewer. Itโ€™s various striping patterns are visible and around it are red squigglies that indicate either noise or rage. It looks at us with a giant yellow eye with a small black dot.
A drawing of a blue glaucus animal viewed from an angled downlooking perspective. Itโ€™s sets of finger-like cerata flair out as it floats in a curve with two dark stripes visible going down its back.

Behind the blue glacus are two green trapazoids extending its length, the top one being a lime-green gradient and the second trapazoid behind it being a darker green. Both trapazoids are offset.
A drawing of an owlfly from a directly top-down perspective, its wings at rest. The black body is highlighted with sheens, and the head and sides are distinctly fuzzy. From the head fuzz, two very large eyes and long clubbed antennae come out. The two sets of wings resting to either side are very bright yellow that become more translucent, with patches of black splotches that match the color of the body.

Behind the owlfly is a brown-orange thick circle, with an accentuating thin half-wring above it and two more small accents above that to either side. They all share a subtle gradient. The circle is visible through the translucency of the wings above it. The entire drawing is symmetrical.
A drawing of a fuchia flatworm. It is in an S-curved pose, with the body twisting partway. The edges are near neon yellow with red on the inner side, and the body is a vibrant purple/pink with sky blue edging and spotting like stars.

Behind the flatworm is a dull green square with rounded corners. On the left and right offset to eachother are two thin rectangles of the same color accentuating the sides of the square not covered by the flatwormโ€™s body. It is a funky little guy.
