A month or so ago I saw a post by someone saying "we should all admit that Neil Gaiman has always been a shitty writer." That whole knee jerk revisionism. No, man, that's part of the whole horror. He's an internationally recognized writer. Objectively a good writer. But he's also a fucking monster.

We have to keep doing this. We have to do this with books and films and games and any meaningful media. Recognize that it's skillfully crafted, recognize the meaning it has to you, and do the terrible math of weighing it against who created it and what they have done.

This is a basic facet of media studies. How do you reconcile the reader's relationship with the work with the author's indelible fingerprints upon the work, and what else those fingers have done? There isn't, has never been, an easy answer. Ease simply does not factor into the equation

We have done this so many times with authors! Within living memory, even. Within this *century,* even. We are still doing a protracted version of this today with Rowling. You must do this work.

The perpetual usage of the "get out of complexity free" card by acting as though you alone have always been woke to this horror by saying that an award-winning, massively influential comic series was Actually Poorly Written is just the most dogshit cowardly move. Worse than "Hatsune Miku wrote this"
