Tasseography

•Tea leaf reading•

You might be wondering where this unusual form of divination came from, so here’s a short history on tasseography. Shortly after tea was introduced to Europe, tea leaf reading, as it’s now recognized, was born. Similar divination tools had been used with an assortment of other materials. The art of tea leaf reading spread through Europe, and is now practiced throughout the world.

Doing a tea leaf reading involves you indulging in a delicious cup of tea and putting your sharp intuitive skills to work. After you enjoy your warm cup of loose leaf tea, you’ll leave the loose tea leaves at the bottom, where some of these leaves will form symbols, each having their own meaning. That’s where your keen intuitive abilities come in! Anyone can see a triangle at the bottom of a teacup, but your job is to intuit what it means for you or the person you’re reading for.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR A TEA LEAF READING

Tea cup with a wide brim that’s light enough to easily see your tea leaves.

Saucer

Loose leaf green or black tea, preferably organic.

Napkins

Pen and paper

Water

HOW TO PERFORM A TEA LEAF READING

1. BREW YOUR TEA

Gather all of your materials. Boil your water. Place about a teaspoon of loose tea in your cup. Pour your water in and steep tea to your preference.

For the next 3 steps, if you’re doing a reading for someone else, have them do the following steps.

2. SIP & SWIRL

Before you take your first sip, gently swirl tea counter clockwise three times. Sip and enjoy your tea, but don’t drink it all! When there’s about 1 tablespoon of tea left in your cup, swirl it again 3 times counter clockwise and think about or speak your query aloud.

3. CREATE YOUR TEA READING CANVAS

Turn your cup upside down onto your saucer to remove the remaining water, allow it a minute or so to drain, then turn it back up right.

4. LOOK FOR SYMBOLS

Look over your loose leaf tea pieces and see if any symbols or shapes jump out to you immediately. Don’t fret if you don’t see anything immediately, similar to scrying with a crystal ball, it can take some time for imagery to form for you. Try looking at the inside of the cup from different directions to see shapes. Keep in mind the images formed are formed from tea leaves, so you will really need to use your imagination.

5. RECORD & DECIPHER YOUR FINDINGS

If you do start to see some shapes, begin writing them down on your piece of paper so you can decipher them later, note where in the cup they are too. Now you’re ready to decipher your findings! Here’s a guide for the most common symbols found during tea leaf readings:

6. UNDERSTAND THE TIMELINE

Where your tea leaves are situated in your cup relate to when they will happen. This is why some of the tea leaf reading cups you find have circles inside of them. Timing is broken into thirds as follows:

Bottom third: farthest away from happening, think 3-5 years out.

Top third: will be happening in the near future, think within the next few weeks.

Middle third: will happen in about a year from now.

7. FORM YOUR READING

Like most divination tools, a honed intuition is key for success, so be sure to lean on any gut instincts as you form the story for your reading. Once you understand the meaning behind the symbols it’s time to put all of the information into a story that makes sense for you or the person you’re doing a reading for.

Some things baby witches should know

Scrolling through witchtok -ew- I've come across a ton of misinformation, even some one here. So I've decided to put together a small list of things I feel like baby witches should know.

1. Not all spells need to be in a jar

2. Deities don't talk to you like normal people do

3. You don't have to be wiccan to be a witch

3. You don't need to be religious to be a witch

4. Not every herb is safe to burn

5. Most essential oils cannot go on your skin

6. Some herbs/teas can have side effects

7. Do not try to cleanse your outdoor space regularly. Say youre doing a one time spell, yeah sure but nature doesnt need to be cleansed

8. DO NOT PUT SALT ON THE GROUND, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GODS.

On twitter I’m seeing dozens of threads from Black activists warning people against burnout, giving all sorts of useful tips about preventing and managing it for the sake of a long-term, sustainable effort.

On tumblr I’m seeing a hell of a lot of young white kids yelling at anyone who actually follows those steps, and acting like burnout is a moral falling rather than a well-proven psychological phenomenon.

Be careful who you get your information from. Don’t let guilt lead you to make choices that will harm both you and the movement.

Witchcraft on a Budget

We don’t all have the funds for elaborate altars and extensive collections of tools. Here are some tips for shopping sales and using stuff around your home.

Use the contents of teabags for your spells. If you’ve already got a collection of teas, why not incorporate them into your practice.

Grow your own herbs. If you’ve got the space to, grow herbs in your garden, balcony, windowsill. Research what plants work best for your situation. You can also grow many grocery store herbs by sticking them in a jar of water!

Learn the magical properties of your spices. If you like to cook, you probably have a collection of your preferred herbs and spices in your cabinet. Make a list of their uses so you can substitute them in spells or craft your own spells. 

Shop the clearance aisle. Craft stores often have jars and bottles of all sizes that end up in the clearance section. Stores that sell home goods will sometimes have candles on clearance. 

Use birthday candles. You can get handfuls of birthday candles at the grocery store for cheap. Don’t worry about getting fancy candles when any candle will work just as well. They also often come in a variety of colors that you can use for different correspondences.

Make a pocket altar. Maybe you don’t have the space or money for a large altar. That’s ok! Re-use a small box or tin and fill it with symbols of your craft and deity if you have one. 

Save orange peels. If you like to eat oranges, dry out the peels in the sun after you are done with them. They can be crushed up and used in spells for positivity or energy. You can also use the peels to make essential oil.

Buy zines. You don’t have to shell out $60 for a new book on witchcraft. There are many etsy shops that offer guides to witchcraft for under $10. If you can’t pay shipping fees, many shops also offer digital versions. You can also look for local witch shops and bookstores that may have free or cheap zines. 

Use crushed eggshells. Eggshells can be used in place of salt to line doorways and protect your home. Be sure to rinse them. This can also be a more environmentally friendly way of protection because salt can damage soil and harm local flora and fauna.

• to do energy cleaning in your home, put in a glass: water, coarse salt and charcoal. position it behind the entrance door.

• bury egg shells in a pot or in your home garden to ensure abundance and fertility in your home.

• do not put the ashes left over from the incense out, they can be reused in making the black salt.

• burn dry rosemary to attract protection, purification, psychic abilities and openness for healing.

• to attract positive energies to you, spread several mirrors around your home, just avoid those with sharp details on your edge. they also help to clear the mind.

• to ward off any bother that is bothering you, write the key words of the situation on a white candle. light the candle and ask the fire beings to burn this evil that you want to destroy.

• spread blackheads under the bed for protection during your sleep.

• make a wreath with chamomile flower and hang it on the door to protect the environment throughout the year from physical and spiritual damage.

• use cinnamon to improve your individual skill with prophecy through divination, channeling and working with oracles.

• when making your own oils, use olive oil and dried herbs of your choice.

• press and store rosemary leaves in your books. this will increase your wisdom during your studies and your memory, making you learn more easily.

• burn some thyme on your altar to clean up your magic space. thyme when burned with incense strengthens psychic power.
