image

Depression can be as crippling as any physical ailment. Often times loved ones believe that a depressed person needs a little push or a reality check when in reality they could use a friend. A depressed person is not seeking for anybody to solve their problems, but they would appreciate one human being who can treat them with the appropriate empathy they deserve. We must remember as a collective society that depression is not a choice, and it is not about you! Do not take it personally if your friend is depressed! Below are some essential social and sentimental facts about depression that you should be in tune with.

Millennial Meditations” is a culmination of his interest in the interplay of light, space, and architecture. For thirty years his sculpture has explored the way in which light falls on modulated surfaces. “Secrets of the Sun” uses the emotional impact of art to address the full range of nature from its most elemental expression as pure light to its most complex expression as global ecology.

In “Cromos” and “New Light on Rome” the universal beauty and power of the solar spectrum, one of Nature’s most fundamental forces, is superimposed on the surfaces and structure of some of the most beautiful public buildings in Italy.

Because the sun’s angle, intensity and color continually change with the hour, day, and season, the art, the ancient monuments, the trains and the stations are continually perceived in a fresh, new light.“ - Peter Erskine’s website.

Immediate Depression Treatment!

If you ever experience extreme depression or sadness for no apparent reason, please remember these things!

1. Not one person’s problems are any less valid than another’s. Your feelings are always valid, because while someone may have a harder life than you, for /you/, what you’re going through /is/ hard. Your feelings and emotions are always valid, no matter what anyone says.

2. Depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain which only medications can fix and then sometimes they don’t work. Mine didn’t. And when you get depressed you don’t have to have a reason for being depressed. You just are. And it’s crippling.

3. Do whatever makes you happy and comfortable, which may include any but is not limited to the following:

If you have a certain snack you just love, eat a small snack, but nothing too heavy.

Have something warm to drink like hot chocolate or a soothing cup of tea. Try to avoid caffeine.

Cover yourself in blankets and snuggle with your favorite stuffed animal(s).

Watch funny videos or just things that make you happy on Youtube. I just watched B1A4’s video for Baby Goodnight and I was smiling from ear to ear the whole time. Their happiness makes me happy.

Do whatever you can to just be comfortable.

4. If people are stressing you out, lock your door, despite any consequences. Just block them out, put on headphones and don’t listen to anyone if you can manage. Only go to people who can help you get through your depression, do not make contact with people who are causing your depression and stress to worsen. You need to help yourself sometimes, and not worry about other people.

5. I’ll repeat. Do what’s going to make /you/ happy or comfortable.

Remember, no matter what anyone else says when you’re in that spot, you are first priority. Take care of /you/ before you worry about anything or anyone else.

If you need a friend who will listen and/or help, I am always here to help you, I will always be available to talk. My inbox is /always/ open.

I remember seeing you talk about coconut oil a while ago and I wanted to try it. What do you use it for?

Coconut oil is a godsend, I use it for literally everything.

Hair:

Put some coconut oil on your ends before washing your hair to protect them from the drying effects of your shampoo.

As a hair mask. Apply two tablespoons of the oil all over your hair and massage it for a few minutes. Leave it on your hair for at least a half hour (I do this once a week).

As a scalp treatment. Apply the oil generously to your scalp and rub it gently to make sure that the oil spreads well. This helps to improve blood circulation on the area and makes your hair grow healthier. It’s great for everyone, but specially if you have dandruff.

Frizz control. Rub a little bit (very little! You don’t want your hair to look oily) of coconut oil to bottom half of your hair to keep those annoying flyaways in place.

Face & Body:

As a face and body moisturizer (even if you have oily skin - which I do). It’s a lot more moisturizing than the usual moisturizers because it penetrates deep layers of the skin, without causing breakouts.

It is a great makeup remover.

Mix it with some brown sugar for a great (and delicious) lip scrub.

You can also use it as a lip balm.

As a budget-friendly under-eye cream.

Mix ½ a cup of coffee grounds with 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil and some sea salt for a body scrub that also stimulates blood flow.

Put some oil on your cuticles to get rid of those ragged cuticles.

It’s also a good substitute for shaving cream.

Other uses:

Oil pulling. Swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for about 20 minutes first thing in the morning. It reduces the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth, improving oral and dental health. (It’s a little gross, I know, but it does wonders for your teeth and gums!)

I’m sure there are a lot of other uses, but these are the things I have personally tried. There are a lot of articles about coconut oil out there so check them out! Oh and one more thing: buy unrefined, extra virgin coconut oil, since it is closest to its natural state.

♥ Castor Oil

The best way to achieve that bold eyebrow look is to apply castor oil on your eyebrows few times a week, it works very well and it works as well on eyelashes. You can also use it on your roots to reduce hair loss and to get more volume in your hair. I highly recommend it!

♥ Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil is very useful to reduce acne and shiness. You can directly apply it on your imperfections or mix it in a face scrub or in a face mask.

Face scrub : 1 spoon of sugar + 1 spoon of olive oil + 1 spoon of honey + few drops of tea tree oil

Face mask : 1 spoon of olive oil + 1 spoon of honey + few drops of tea tree oil

It can also be used to whiten your teeth, by putting one drop of tea tree oil on your toothbrush.

The Body shop has an entire tea tree oil line that I personally loooove.

♥ Coconut oil

It’s the best way to moisturize your skin and your hair. It can be applied on the ends to reduce split ends or to the roots for hair growth ( the best is to mix it with castor oil ).

I also use it as a shaving oil and it leaves my skin so smooth and shiny.

Coconut oil can also be used as a makeup remover, lip balm, foot cream, shoe cream / cleaner, and cooking oil ( very healthy ).

Understanding Depression.

Please do not remove author credits from this article. This article was written to raise awareness of depression and how to help and support yourself and others who are struggling with this illness. Amber

—————————————————————-

Depression is a very common mental health problem, it affects 1 in 10 people in the USA, 1 in 4 people in the UK, and approximately 121 million people around the world.

(Depression Statistics , Mental Health Statistics).

However, it is rarely understood in every day life, and only the most serious cases are addressed by the media, by schools, universities and society. Over 80% of people suffering with clinical depression are not receiving any specific treatment in the US.

(Depression Statistics).

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM IV) contains a list of diagnostic criteria for depression as listed here:

Depressed mood or a loss of interest in daily activities for more than 2 weeks

The mood shown is different to the usual mood or personality

impaired social, occupational and/or educational function

For a diagnosis, a person usually has to show a minimum of 5 of the following 9 criteria present almost every day:

Depressed mood, or irritability most of the day

Decreased interest or pleasure in most activities

Significant weight change (5% gain or loss) or changes in appetite

Changes in sleep, either insomnia (unable to sleep) or hypersomnia (sleeping too much)

Change in activity, either psychomotor agitation (inability to stop moving) or retardation (inability to move, feeling lethargic and slow)

Fatigue or loss of enegry

Guilt or worthlessness

Inability to concentrate or indecisiveness

Suicidality, thoughts of death or suicide.

There are many mental disorders that are co-morbid, or combined, with depression. These can include anxiety, mania, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia and many others.

However, the environmental issues surrounding the individual suffering these symptoms must be taken into account. For example, if the individual is grieving, suffering from addiction, or substance abuse, or has a medical issue that may affect their mood, the diagnosis of depression may not be accurate. (DSM IV Criteria)

There are many treatments easily available for Depression, also known as  Major Depressive Disorder or Clinical Depression.

These can include the following:

Talking therapy, which includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or counseling therapy. These talking therapies come under the umbrella term of “psychotherapy” which means that they are therapies specifically aimed to treat mental disorders. This type of treatment is usually used to treat mild or moderate depression.

Antidepressants are also used to treat depression. There are many, many different types of anti depressants, some work better for some people than others do. These are usually prescribed for moderate to severe depression. The types of tablets can range from Fluoxetine (marketed as Prozac and other names), to Sertraline (marketed as Zoloft and other names)

Combination Therapy is the most effective therapy for moderate to severe depression and involves combining medication and talking therapy.

Mental Health Teams are used when a person is suffering from severe depression, and are made up of psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses and therapists. They often provide intensive talking therapy combined with medication.

There are some self-help treatments that are supposed to be effective, but it’s best to talk to a doctor before trying these.

St John’s Wort is a herbal treatment used for depression, available from pharmacies and health food shops. However, it’s not recommended by doctors as you cannot be sure of the effect it will have on you. It also can interact and cause complications with other medications such as antidepressants, anticonvulsants and contraceptive medication.

Exercise is meant to release endorphins that can help to combat mild depression, but be sure that you exercise safely and carefully.

(NHS)

If you know someone that is suffering from depression, and wish to support them, there are some tips that may be useful.

Talk to them, get them to share how they feel and listen to them. You don’t need to offer advice, or to fix them, you just need to listen.Show them that you care, and that they can trust you, but don’t pressure them into talking.

Encourage social activities. Try to distract the person with activities that they enjoy, especially ones that involve interacting with others. It has been shown that being around people can help to reduce the feelings of depression.

Encourage support groups. Showing them that they are not alone in feeling this way can go a long way into helping a person suffering from depression. They can share their experiences and their own tips on coping, and receive support and advice from others too.

Try not to judge or criticize them. Statements like “You just need to get up and do something you’d see things better.” Depression can make small things seem like insurmountable objects and make everything seem so much harder. Tough-love is more likely to cause more harm than good.

Try to learn as much as you can about depression. The more you understand, the easier it will be to support the person through the more difficult times.

Be patient. Depression doesn’t just vanish over night. It can take time before a person begins to feel as though they are recovering. In some cases, depression never entirely  leaves, but it can be managed and controlled, so that it’s effect is barely noticeable on every day life.

(Helpguide  , Psychcentral)

If you, or someone you know is struggling with depression, please speak to a doctor or professional to help you. We all deserve help, and we all deserve to be cared about.
