Look I made a thing
So I just started reading The Devil All The Time and one thing I really admired about the movie adaptation was the way they re-did the introduction of Willard’s wife, Charlotte.
In the book, she’s described as the most beautiful woman Willard has ever seen, with dark hair and the look of a pin-up girl in a movie. That’s his whole reason for marrying her: she’s beautiful and sexy.
Portrayed by Haley Bennet in the film, though, Charlotte has light hair and a very cherubic fresh face. She isn’t styled to look like the most beautiful girl in the world. She’s not even the styled as the most beautiful girl in the diner. Yet, Willard obviously sees something in her that compels him, and then when he follows her outside, he catches her in an act of kindness and his heart is stolen.
Can we just stop for a moment to recognize how rare this kind of adaptation is in Hollywood films, where most nuanced female characters in novels are flattened into one-dimensional sex sirens on film? Here we see nearly the exact opposite.

listen up I need to talk about characters in pain alone. a fighter who won their most recent match but who goes home alone to a crappy little apartment where they're lucky if they manage to make some ramen before they pass out on the couch, only to wake stiff with bruises in a few hours. a vigilante who loses to the villain and gets left on a rooftop to pick themself up and try to stagger home without getting found, arrested, or passing out in their costume. the new member on a team who gets the dirtiest, hardest jobs as an initiation and who can't admit to anyone that they're breaking under the pressure because all their teammates will hear is weakness.
I need characters pasting bandages on injuries with trembling fingers as their vision blurs. I need characters desperately trying to haul themselves up just one more stair so they can stagger to their front door. I need characters who make it through that door only to collapse right behind it, watching the light in their bathroom blur and fade before they can get to their first aid kit. I need characters passing out in alleyways only to wake up hours later and know they still have to try to make it home on their own because they think they have no one to call.
if you don’t think that video games are art, what are you doing?
examples:
1. detroit: become human
amazing character animation
beautiful environments/surroundings
2. the last of us
how is this concept art not appreciated by everyone?
3. red dead redemption 2
just look at this screenshot
and this character art?
don’t you dare tell me that video games aren’t art.
one fun thing about being a teacher in march 2023 is that chess is a literal epidemic among teens. we are starting to have meetings about how we can STOP teenagers from playing too much chess which is like if we were trying to figure out how to stop them from reading for fun. When i was in high school five years ago chess was nerd shit only but now it is transcending every social and language barrier and is absolutely rampant. kids aren’t on their phone texting in class anymore it’s ONLY chess.com. kids are playing chess on their phones while playing chess in real life. this is still better than tiktok because at least the kids are developing an attention span from this
