anora (2024) thoughts

aaaahhh, sean baker let me kiss you on the mouth. this film had so much personality and humanity. it's both very loud and very quiet. you not only come to root for the protagonist, anora, but you feel so fucking bad for her by the end. and it's a really complicated cocktail of emotions. because she's framed as both triumphant, yet utterly defeated, and the movie doesn't let you sit comfortably with either position. it paints this young girl with such bold colors, yet also shows you the tragedy of having a bright spark, fighting hard to keep it alive, and being crushed by the world around you anyway

and still the film leaves you with a hopeful note that sometimes, someone does notice you. someone, a really unexpected person, will appreciate you. which is why igor/anora!!!! is so good. i love that he's such a soft oddball, but with a hint of menace. and the fact that he's the side character/goon you don't expect to have depths or connect with the plucky protagonist but he doooes, and they work so well. i love that in the end, in a sort of twisted bittersweet way, anora does get her fairytale. there are references to cinderella, and anora dreams of having her honeymoon at disney. but her "prince" turns out to be the guy with the henchman name, and that's so beautiful to me lol. (he even literally gives her a ring at the end!! they were insane for that)

and they really hit those lil romance notes, because he is always quietly looking out for her, quietly brooding in the background, being sad/upset on her behalf, impressed by the way she fights, amused but also disconcerted and worried!! gah. when he tells the family they should apologize to her. ROMANCE.

also this movie is really funny, like verging on farce a couple of times, and it shifts tone all the time, but always sticks the landing, so that the last scene still feels both sweet and devastating even after all the laughs. go watch it!!!

Chihaya was listening to Tare when Taichi found her in high school. It was the same poem that secured her first win against Shinobu. Taichi's love was described as Shinoburedo and Koi su cho by Kana-chan--poems that talk about a strong love that cannot be hidden. Yura was the last poem read in their 2nd-year nationals competition, the card that Taichi offered to the gods and staked all his good fortune into while hoping for Chihaya to wake up and witness his fate. The Kaze wo poem provided the words of allegory for the heartbreak Chihaya experienced at Taichi's departure. Se was the poem Chihaya sent to Taichi on their 3rd-year regionals, a poem about asking fate for a chance to meet again. It was only when Chihayaburu was recited when Chihaya noticed Taichi's arrival in their 3rd-year nationals. Despite its disappearance, she thought it was okay as long as Taichi was with her. The same poem also helped Taichi win against Sudo despite disassociating himself from it; and against Arata's strong defense, leading to his first win against him. Fu was Taichi's second-best take against Arata, moving Chihaya to tears. It was also Chihaya's first card she took like a real karuta player and what Taichi admired ever since. Kimi ga tame described Taichi's secret support for Chihaya in the Queen match, collecting the 7 green herbs that symbolize luck for her. Chihaya took Su, a poem she described as "romantic", during her first realization that Taichi has always been with her, which happened after she recalled the memory of Taichi saying his feelings for her might fade away someday. Su was also the poem Taichi used to communicate with her during the Qualifier, motivating her not to give up despite having trouble with Makino-san’s reading. Tachi was the card Chihaya voluntarily kept and was the card of fate, winning her the Queen title. On the fusuma, Tachi is a poem that has always been a pair for Chiha for a thousand years. Tachi, the poem that reaffirmed Chihaya’s belief that Taichi is constantly with her from the very beginning. Chihaya described Taichi’s confession to her as a poem until it was her turn to recite her own poem to him with the simple words of “I love you”. 

Can Taichihaya get any more poetic than this???!!!

Also keep in mind that this was the first time Andrew saw Riko after he learnt that 1. Riko was the one who arranged the things with Drake and 2. Riko was the one who tortured Neil during christmas brake. So yeah he was going there for REVENGE

at some point i WILL write a jean/cat/laila pov of jeremy's faser hook up

because like do you think the room was really quiet and intense that night? laila and cat doing their best to keep it light but jean noticeably quiet and watching the door waiting for jeremy to come back. until he eventually gives up and says he's going to sleep and then laila gets jeremy's text and jean pretends to be sleeping but he hears her quietly saying she needs to go get jeremy and he can hear the disapproval and disappointment in her tone. jean hears cat say she'll watch over him until laila gets back and then laila's gone and it's just cat and jean and jean closes his eyes and tries to sleep. pretends he doesn't care. laila will bring jeremy back. everything's fine.

but it's not.

because there's still missing truths and there's the teasing about drugs and parties and jean said he would protect jeremy tonight. but he let him leave. he couldn't force him to stay. what else was he supposed to do. then he hears a quiet knock. cat's up in a second but the door opens. jean gets up too but stays out of sight. he can hear their voices. cat's "what the fuck jeremy?" is all he needs before he's moving, catching sight of bruises on jeremy's tanned skin. it looks wrong. it looks ugly. it looks painful.

he promised to protect him. he didn't.
