LETS TALK ABOUT SPARRING

I’ve read a lot of fics, have seen many shows, and have watched many movies that are completely inaccurate when it comes to sparring. NOW, i know it’s fiction, and I greatly enjoy it nonetheless, but I would like to share a few things with you, as a person who trains in Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). There are a few general things in this, as well as stuff more focused to a certain european weapon. (this is all Historical European stuff, obviously if you’re writing for a different region, this probably won’t apply that much.)

SPARRING

-you don’t practice with real sharp swords. Never. It’s incredibly dangerous, especially since sparring is trying to practice your killing/injuring skills. In older times, you would use wood, maybe wrapped in leather or canvas to practice. Today, you use weighted nylon swords/weapons, and you usually wear a mask while doing so. Steel is and was an option, but the blade will be completely dull, and the tip will be bent over itself.

-It’s practically impossible to knock someone off their feet while sparring, unless you are hooking your foot or weapon behind their leg. It’s hard to push back and cause someone to fall, since they can just retreat back a bit.

-YOU. DON’T. SPEND. HOURS. SPARRING. ESPECIALLY WITHOUT A BREAK. It’s exhausting, the most people usually go is 10 minutes before they have a break. During Training, you only spar for about 2-5 minutes before stopping and having a rest.

-You try your hardest never to cross your feet. It’s dangerous and it unbalances you. Your opponent can take advantage of you easily.

-Usually, you want to strike your opponent with the last ¼ of your blade, basically just the tip and a little below. That’s the sharpest point, and you get the most force behind it.

-Swords aren’t super heavy. Stop the giant, huge, I-can-barely-lift-this trope. Longswords are usually 3lbs. It’s not heavy when you pick it up. However, it gets heavy when you’re holding it up above your head for a while. Swords were not made to be heavy, especially since you would have to hold them up in battle for sometimes hours.

-It’s incredibly hard to engage in witty banter and such. You are constantly moving and trying to strike your opponent. Since it’s fiction, you can do what you want, but just know that trying to have a conversation while sparring is like trying to have one while running. It tires you out even more, and usually just comes out breathless and wheezy.

-Swords are not lightsabers. You cannot try and hurt someone with just any part of your blade. It will just annoy your opponent. Now, for sparring, you will want to focus on hitting your opponent with the edge of your blade, and you won’t really ever be trying to hit someone with the flat of your blade.

-In sparring, you will get hit. And get bruises. I count five from just 2 days ago. (Also reminder that bruises don’t form for 1-3 days.) If you happened to get a hard thrust to the ribs, they will probably fracture. It happens. I haven’t had it personally, but those who’ve trained longer have. The worst injury I’ve gotten is a bruise on my chest that didn’t fade for nearly a month.

-Grip!!! You don’t clutch your sword super tight. No. It limits movement. My instructor taught me to hold firmly with the thumb, pointer, and middle finger, and use the other two as more guiding fingers. You swing your sword with your wrist, not a big giant arm movement. That is tiring and slow. 

I will be focusing on using a one handed sword in this next bit, specifically a Scottish Regimental Broadsword. A basic sword to build off of.

-FOOTWORK. It’s not a super complicated series of perfectly planned out steps. It just isn’t. With Regimental Broadsword (which is what I will focus on, since it’s what I’ve trained with most), you have to have a good base (rear-weighted stance, front foot pointed at your opponent, back foot turned sideways), and then once you have that, you just have to move around and try not to get hit.

-Slipping. (Continuation of footwork). With a rear-weighted stance, the goal is to be able to move the front foot anywhere. You should actually be able to keep your front foot an inch off the ground without having to adjust your back foot. Slipping is when this comes in handy. If your opponent takes a swing at your front leg, you should be able to just slip it back to go next to your other foot, and swing your sword up to get your opponents head. Slipping is really important.

-Advance and Retreat (other continuation of footwork). While moving forward or back, you always want to feel the ground with a heel-toe movement, so you can tell if there are rocks or branches and such. Advancing, you want to move your front leg first. Retreating, your back leg.

-Traversing (last continuation of footwork)(maybe). Transversing is basically advancing in on your opponent in a circular motion. You’re trying to get close and personal. Reminder to not cross your feet. You will loose balance and probably end up getting whacked with a sword. Traversing is a spiral motion sort of. Your opponent can avoid getting trapped If they do it as well.

I will probably come back and add more soon, because there’s more I know, but can’t remember at the moment.

50 INTERESTING WAYS TO BEGIN A STORY.

I am well aware of the turmoil of finding a gripping story beginning. God the pain! So I present to you prompts to help y'all hook the readers !

The arrival of a letter or email or package. ( Whether the contents is good / bad depends on you )

The text of a letter / email/ diary. ( You might wanna dive right into what it says and let the reader learn about the character reading )

An invitation to join a club / attend a party / to do something shocking.

A death of a character.

The main character is in a frustrating situation. ( This can quickly help readers to empathize right away )

A main character is in an awkward situation.

An escape from a boring meeting or prison or someplace unwanted .

Someone discovers a dead body.

A funeral is held for someone in the family / the community.

The beginning or the middle of a disaster. ( a bombing , a plane crash, an Apocalypse.? Anything really)

A birth.

The aftermath of a disaster.

A character does something which will be discovered later. Eg; sneaks a love note into someone's possession, poisons the wine, plants a bomb in a car, etc.

A game or contest.

A kiss.

A performance or the conclusion of one.

One character rescues another.

A main character declares he is in big trouble.

A main character is clearly in big trouble.

A main character is in the hospital.

A main character sees a house or city for the first time.

A plane/ ship/ train arrives. ( Your OC might be on board or watching it. If they're on board, you can take the readers on a journey)

Someone gets amazing news.

Someone gets devastating news.

Someone goes on a date.

A scene at a party/bar / nightclub.

A fight scene. ( OC may be participating or watching the fight )

An all-out battle scene.

A character moves to a new place

A dramatic moment in the middle of the end of the story. ( You can decide to start like this and backtrack to show how they got there )

Someone is arrested.

A courtroom trail.

A job interview. ( This helps the story start with the main character being vulnerable and the readers can empathize with them while getting to know them through their inner monologue )

The main character gets fired from their job. ( A nice method for instant empathy)

A chase scene. ( Nothing better to pull the reader than a little action. Hehe ~)

Character or characters wait for another. Maybe an ambush or a surprise party.

A busy street scene.

A character/characters getting ready for an event. Eg; getting dressed, put on makeup, shaved, do their hair .etc

A visitor shows up at the door. ( a stray cat? A future love interest? Someone your character dislikes? Etc )

A character commits a crime.

A character witnesses a crime.

Characters or a character do a job.

One character teaches another how to do something.

Character or characters preparing to dit down at a meal

A character comes across a significant object. ( probably a magical object? A dangerous object like a gun? It could be anything. )

Someone teaches or attends a class.

Your main character discovers something shocking in the possession of their loved one. For example, imagine them discovering a gun / a suicide note, a bloody knife, or clothing, a large amount of hidden money, very disturbing photos, etc )

Your character running away from something or someone dangerous / deadly.

Your main character waking up in an unfamiliar place. ( A nice method to start with a little mystery. Spicy Bonus points: they don't remember how they got there in the first place. Or better yet AMNESIA!! There are many ways to get around it.)

50. Your character being followed. Or they're the one following someone)

writing prompts for writers with no motivation

pick a topic you know nothing about and write about it like you’re the expert. just make stuff up. Tell us all about the complicated history of scissors or whatever and how left handed scissors were banned by the Catholic Church until 1978, or something

Create completely over-the-top self indulgent OC’s. Write about the magical half-unicorn witch with rainbow hair and sparkly purple eyes that you wanted to be when you were 14.

Write a negative review of a book that doesn’t exist. Just make stuff up off the top of your head to complain about.

Write smut, but like, intentionally bad smut. make it as unsexy/pretentious/purple/unrealistic as possible. Find the most convoluted metaphors for your characters’ genitalia that you can possibly conceive of.

pick two of any kind of work of fiction (movies, books, etc) and come up with an “X meets Y” style blurb for a hypothetical work of fiction that...in theory??...meets the two in the middle.

lists of names in a specific style, but they get progressively more ridiculous. examples: pirates, supervillains, Vikings, Fantasy(tm) taverns, puritans, settings on a Fantasy(tm) map, boybands, YA dystopian protagonists, warrior cats, any category you can find on a name generator website really

Make up some unhinged political opinion or conspiracy theory for a fantasy setting. spend a paragraph in the persona of some elf antivaxxer arguing that wizard staffs make you gay

make titles (and if you want, synopses) for books that don’t exist. you can base them on real books if you want

write fake sayings, inspirational quotes, fortune-cookie sayings. Make them sound almost like they mean something at first glance but they’re incomprehensible when you try to delve into them. Or make them just weird.

In a similar vein as the SCP Wiki’s Log of Anomalous Items, come up with magical or “anomalous” versions of everyday objects. You can start with stuff on your desk if you like. Water bottles that fill up with horseshoe crab blood if left unattended. or whatever. Include details on where they were found if you want.

write about questionable super heroes with weird or overly specific powers. Like the little known Blue Footed Booby Man

write a “horror” story or creepypasta but it’s like...as stupid and not-scary as possible. Dont just depend on “the twist/scary thing is super cliche and predictable” for it either, see how you can take an actually effective concept and make it unbearably dumb

invent swear words/insults, the more complex the better

plagiarize. By this I mean write something that’s completely made from sentences from other things and try to make it coherent

write one (1) scene from the most outrageously cool and epic hypothetical story you can imagine. just try to cram as many references to magical flying wolf bounty hunters and inter-dimensional dragon priests and time traveling samurai as you can with literally no regard for anything

Take a sentence or paragraph and replace every word you can in it with a synonym. either try to make it as weird and uncomfortable as possible, or just keep doing this in a telephone game sort of fashion until it’s no longer comprehensible.

Sweet ways for your otp to show affection.

Reading to them to help the other sleep.

Singing a lullaby / humming a soft tune / counting sheep (or whatever) to the other to sleep .

Cuddling and sleeping in on lazy days .

Staying up with the other who has insomnia ,even though they're tired / feel sleepy.

Back hugs and kissing their neck/ crook of their neck/ shoulder/ cheek .

Nuzzling their tummy .

Stolen kisses . Where they're soft / tender.

Slow kisses.

Kissing top of their head.

Nuzzling their neck.

Kissing their cheeks.

Teasing them . ( eg .Leaning in close for a kiss and kissing their cheeks . Or something)

Inside jokes.

Caressing their hair while they sleep.

Cooking / buying them their favorite meal or snack when they are sad .

Drying/ combing / braiding their hair.

Being goofy just to make them laugh cuz they're down / sad.

Tight hugs and cuddling , enjoying their quiet moments.
