Did you know the Original Statue of Liberty presented to the U.S. was a Statue of a… “Black Woman”. There is a lot of history that didn’t make it into the history books for our schools. READ, get you a book and educate yourself.
A History Lesson It is hard to believe that after my many years of schooling secondary and post) the following facts about the Statue of Liberty was never taught. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of people including myself have visited the Statue of Liberty over the years but yet I’m unable to find one person who knows the true history behind the Statue- amazing. Yes,amazing that so much important Black history (such as this) is hidden from us (Black and White). What makes this even worse is the fact that the current twist on history perpetuates and promotes white supremacy at the expense of Black Pride.
During my visit to France I saw the original Statue of Liberty. However there was a difference, the statue in France is Black. The Statue of Liberty was originally a Black woman, but, as memory serves, it was because the model was Black.
In a book called “The Journey of The Songhai People“, according to Dr. Jim Haskins, a member of the National Education Advisory Committee of the Liberty-Ellis Island Committee, professor of English at the University of Florida, and prolific Black author, points out that what stimulated the original idea for that 151 foot statue in the harbor.
He says that what stimulated the idea for the creation of the statue initially was the part that Black soldiers played in the ending of Black African Bondage in the United States. It was created in the mind of the French historian Edourd de Laboulaye, chairman of the French Anti-Slavery Society, who, together with sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, proposed to the French government that the people of France present to the people of the United States through the American Abolitionist Society, the gift of a Statue of Liberty in recognition of the fact that Black soldiers won the Civil War in the United States.
It was widely known then that it was Black soldiers who played the pivotal role in winning the war, and this gift would be a tribute to their prowess. Suzanne Nakasian, director of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island Foundations’ National Ethnic Campaign said that the Black Americans’ direct connection to Lady Liberty is unknown to the majority of Americans,BLACK or WHITE.
When the statue was presented to the U.S. Minister to France in 1884, it is said that he remonstrated that the dominant view of the broken hackles would be offensive to a U.S. South, because since the statue was a reminder of Blacks winning their freedom. It was a reminder to a beaten South of the ones who caused their defeat, their despised former captives.
1.) You may go and see the original model of the Statue of Liberty, with the broken chains at her feet and in her left hand. Go to the Museum of the City of NY, Fifth Avenue and 103rd Street write to Peter Simmons and he can send you some documentation.
2.) Check with the N.Y. Times magazine, part II_May 18, 1986. Read the article by Laboulaye.
3.) The dark original face of the Statue of Liberty can be seen in the N.Y. Post, June 17, 1986, also the Post stated the reason for the broken chains at her feet.
4.) Finally, you may check with the French Mission or the French Embassy at the U.N. or in Washington, D.C. and ask for some original French material on the Statue of Liberty, including the Bartholdi original model. — with Edwin Cobb, Gemini Hodge and Deverick Murray.

Imagine being in your young teens and having the entire world in front of you due to complete and utter pop stardom. Money, fame, and success is all at your fingertips at such an early age. How would you react to all that power? It might easily go to your head or manifest into an addiction of some kind.
Over the decades there have been many stars that fit just that description. Some of them have faded incredibly quickly, others stayed on the straight and narrow path, and others fell only to rise again. There are certainly more horror stories than success stories when it comes to that kind of fame.
One of the kings of pop music over the last decade is someone who fits exactly the description of a young star who put himself on the precipice of utter destruction. That star is Justin Bieber. He came onto the scene when he was just a young boy, and in a recent Vogue interview, he talks about his addiction to Xanax.
Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin grace the cover of vogue
In a recent issue of Vogue, two of Hollywood’s youngest stars graced the cover. They are a power couple like no other, Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin. The two opened up during an interview with Vogue and pretty much left everything out on the table, including his Xanax addiction.
“I found myself doing things that I was so ashamed of, being super-promiscuous and stuff, and I think I used Xanax because I was so ashamed. My mom always said to treat women with respect. For me that was always in my head while I was doing it, so I could never enjoy it. Drugs put a screen between me and what I was doing. It got pretty dark. I think there were times when my security was coming in late at night to check my pulse and see if I was still breathing.”
Clean since 2014
ADVERTISEMENT
According to Justin Bieber, he got clean back in 2014 with the help of his pastor at the time, Carl Lentz. The detox was done at Carl Lent’z house, and was a success. He hasn’t taken drugs in five years since the detox, which his now wife, Hailey Baldwin, is incredibly happy about. Bieber still enjoys the occasional drink during social events, but that is all. That’s not bad for someone who could have easily ruined his career.
Regarding her now husband, Hailey Baldwin had this to say: “I’m really proud of him. To do it without a program, and to stick with it without a sober coach or AA or classes-I think it’s extraordinary. He is, in ways, a walking miracle.” While her comments are meant to be uplifting, this shouldn’t deter anyone from seeking traditional help with their addiction.
Justin also had sex addiction issues
Bieber also opened up about his “legitimate problem with sex.” That problem can’t be made easier by the fact that Justin Bieber is a sex symbol for millions of girls around the world. His sex issues, along with his Xanax addiction, led him to become celibate. He enjoyed a year of focused celibacy when he met Hailey Baldwin.
Justin Bieber went on to explain his intentions for cleaning up his life, and what gifts that has brought him. “I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result. There are perks. You get rewarded for good behavior.” If Hailey Baldwin is the reward for that tough journey, it is a journey well taken.

“Here we go again,” wrote US District Judge Carlton Reeves, who had previously ruled against Mississippi’s 15-week abortion law in November.
Reporting From
Washington, DC
WASHINGTON — A federal judge in Mississippi on Friday temporarily blocked the state from enforcing a new law that largely bans abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected, usually around six weeks.
“Here we go again,” wrote US District Judge Carlton Reeves, who previously ruled against Mississippi’s 15-week abortion law in November after concluding it was unconstitutional.
Reeves wrote that the US Supreme Court had “repeatedly held” that women have the right to choose to have an abortion before the fetus is viable. A fetus wasn’t viable at 15 weeks, he wrote, which meant it wasn’t viable at six weeks either. He granted a preliminary injunction blocking the state from enforcing the law while the case went forward.
“By banning abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, S.B. 2116 prevents a woman’s free choice, which is central to personal dignity and autonomy,” Reeves wrote. “This injury outweighs any interest the State might have in banning abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat.”
A spokesperson for the Mississippi attorney general’s office did not immediately return a request for comment.
Mississippi is one of five states to pass a fetal heartbeat law. Judges in Iowa, Kentucky, and North Dakota previously have blocked abortion bans in those states from taking effect. A lawsuit in Ohio is pending, and reproductive rights groups have vowed to file suit over a law in Georgia. None of these laws have taken effect yet.
Anti-abortion advocates see litigation over laws such as the one passed in Mississippi as vehicles to convince the Supreme Court to reconsider the 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, which established that women have a constitutional right to abortion. Lower courts remain bound by Roe in the meantime, however.
The ACLU and Planned Parenthood filed a lawsuit Friday challenging a law passed in Alabama that, if it takes effect in November, would be the strictest abortion law in the nation — it makes it a crime for health care providers to perform all abortions unless the life of the women is in “serious” risk.
Reeves, who was confirmed to the US District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi in 2010, has been openly critical of the Trump administration and Senate Republicans, a rarity among federal judges. As BuzzFeed News reported in April, Reeves delivered a speech at a law school in April calling the Trump administration a “great assault on our judiciary” and comparing the president’s criticism of the judiciary to tactics used by the Ku Klux Klan and segregationists.
He blasted the White House and Senate Republicans for the lack of diversity among Trump’s judicial nominees, saying they were “not stumbling unaware towards a homogeneous judiciary.”

John Martin Hill, 35, is behind bars after allegedly meeting a woman online, proposing to her after a week and then swindling her out of $80,000.

Love hurts.
It can also cost a bundle.
Just ask the Georgia woman who met an online Romeo who allegedly swindled her out of more than $80,000 after asking her to marry him just a week after they met.
On Tuesday night, police in Franklin, Tennessee, arrested the man, John Martin Hill, 35, on an outstanding warrant in connection with the alleged theft, the Gwinnett County, Georgia, Police Department says in a news release obtained by PEOPLE.
Hill is being held at the Williamson County Jail in Tennessee on a $500,000 bond and is awaiting extradition to Georgia, where he faces a felony charge of with theft by deception, the Gwinnett County Police Department says in the release.
John Martin Hill, 35 FRANKLIN POLICE DEPARTMENT
“By sharing this story, it is our hope that he is not able to victimize any other women using this scam,” police say in the release. “These types of con men are very good at manipulating their victims. They tend to say everything that a woman wants to hear.”
In this case, the alleged scam came to light when a woman from Alpharetta called the Gwinnett County Police Department to report that she met a man named John Hill on Match.com who bilked her out of more than $80,000.
John Martin Hill, 35 GWINNET COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT
Hill allegedly told the victim that he was a millionaire — and promised more.
“During their short romance, he convinced her that they were in love and wanted to buy a house together,” police allege in the release.
They allegedly went house-hunting and selected a home they liked. Within a week of knowing one another, they allegedly agreed to get married.
Preparing for her new life with Hill, the woman allegedly gave the suspect more than $80,000 to use to buy the house and furniture, say police.
She never heard from him again.
As authorities began looking into the case, they discovered that Hill was allegedly living a completely different life than the one he led the woman to believe.
Hill, one of the detectives learned, lives an apartment in Duluth — about 11 miles away from Alpharetta — with another woman and child.
Acting on a tip Tuesday night, police in Tennessee arrested Hill — considered a fugitive out of Georgia — at the Cool Springs Marriott, Frankllin Police say in a news release.
Before he was ultimately arrested, Hill allegedly “attempted to evade arriving Franklin Police Officers by darting into a hotel conference room and hiding under a table,” the release says.
The Alpharetta woman wasn’t the only woman Hill had allegedly swept off her feet and scammed, police learned.
“Further investigation into John Hill revealed that he has changed his name over five times in the past two and a half years,” police say in the release, adding that women in Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey have accused him of similar crimes.
It is not known if he has been charged in those cases.
Since authorities first alerted the public to Hill’s alleged scam, they say they’ve heard from other women who allege that they were either in a relationship with Hill or knew someone who was romantically involved with him, the release says.
It is unclear if Hill has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf. He has not yet entered a plea.
The department cautions people who meet others online to be careful not to share personal information, financial information, or cash with someone in the early stages of a relationship.
Anyone with information on Hill is asked to contact GCPD detectives at 770-513-5300. To remain anonymous, tipsters should contact Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477) or visit www.stopcrimeATL.com.

Williams stated he and Pompeo are such close friends, their families take vacations together with their kids.
Jesse Williams, one of the stars of the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, revealed what his costar Ellen Pompeo is like when she’s not in character as the “dark and twisty” Meredith Grey.
“I mean, she’s really not like that character at all,” Williams said during an interview that is set to air Sunday. “She’s kind of a street chick.”
Williams, who has been a series regular on the show since 2010, when he began playing the character Jackson Avery, said Pompeo has “seen a lot of shit.”
“I don’t want to speak out of turn, but she’s actually surprisingly kind of down,” he said before revealing that Pompeo “almost stabbed [him] once,” though he didn’t provide any additional details.
The two actors are friends in real life, Williams said, revealing to Profile host Ashley Ford that they’ve “taken vacations together with the kids.” He said that their friendship is “really cool, like, it’s not a forced thing.”
Staying on the subject of Grey’s, which is wrapping up its 15th season, Williams briefly discussed the dissolution of his onscreen marriage to April Kepner (Sarah Drew) in Season 12, which broke the hearts of fans who affectionately referred to the two as “Japril.”
With Drew having departed the show this year, Williams talked about how he felt about the two being an item and weighed in on his new love interest, Maggie Pierce, played by Kelly McCreary.
Grey’s is known for “figuring out ways to get you invested in something just to rip you apart,” Williams said. “And I reminded folks that, you know, maybe for different reasons, but that Japril was a hard pill to swallow for fans as well. They didn’t like us.” He said fans weren’t initially thrilled about the two characters as an item — “but then you figure out a rhythm and a chemistry.”

Williams teased that the last episodes of the current season “are going to be pretty impactful for Jaggie” — a mashup name for his burgeoning romance with Maggie.
But the actor did say he isn’t sure how long he’ll continue at the ABC series.
“Do you think you’re gonna stay on till the ship goes down?” Ford asked.
“I think that ship would have to be steered down,” Williams said with a laugh, “ … ’cause we are staying afloat in an amazing way.
“I work with amazing, amazing, talented people, like, top to bottom,” said Williams, who directed his second episode for the series this year, titled “What I Did for Love.”
“It’s such an example and a pioneering show in so many ways, particularly in inclusion — not as charity,” he said, “but inclusion because it’s the best way to make things work to get shit done.”

Oklahoma City, OK — Disturbing body camera footage was released this week showing how normal childhood acts can and will lead to children being shot by police. Boys being boys is apparently now a reason for deadly force in the land of the free.
Lorenzo Clerkley, 14, was playing with his friends two months ago when Oklahoma City police officer Kyle Holcomb put two bullets in him. Lorenzo was playing with friends in an abandoned house and he was also playing with toy guns with his other friends, but this was no reason for a cop to open fire—especially when the cop knew the boys were playing with toy guns.
“Everything happened so quick,” Cherelle Lee, Lorenzo’s mother told CNN. “There was no reason he should’ve fired off anyway just because he could’ve ended up taking his life.”
Despite body camera footage showing how fast the officer was to open fire on a child he knew was playing with a “cap gun,” and despite the lack of evidence that Lorenzo was even holding a toy gun when he was shot, Holcomb has returned to full duty after a brief paid vacation.
As the video shows, as the officer walks along the fence, faint pops are heard in the distance. Holcomb then gets on the radio, saying, “I think it’s a cap gun, but they are shooting something off.”
The fact that the kids were heard shooting the toy guns in the house proves they had no idea anyone had called police on them and no idea that police were there.
When Holcomb walks up to a portion of the fence that is missing boards, he points his gun through it for just a few seconds before opening fire.
“Show me your hands! Drop it!” Holcomb says and then immediately begins firing without allowing Lorenzo any time to respond. Lorenzo was shot twice.
Police said in a statement in March that “the suspect did not comply with the orders and Sergeant Holcomb discharged his firearm and struck the suspect.” However, the officer gave Lorenzo exactly 0 seconds to comply with any order.
“Drop the gun!” the officer says. “Shots fired! Shots fired! Black male with a grey hoodie had the gun!”
When backup arrives, Holcomb tells another officer, “He’s the one that had a gun.”
That officer then asks the teen, “You had a gun?”
“I didn’t have a gun,” Lorenzo responds.
“Looks like just a flesh wound.” Another officer says, as Lorenzo lies face down in the grass with his hands cuffed behind his back, bleeding out. “Help me drag this guy.”
“My side,” Lorenzo says in pain as the officers probe him for bullet holes. “No, my other side. It’s, like, my hip,” he says of the bullet that entered his hip bone and exited through his buttocks.
As the video shows, Holcomb looks a the bullet wound and tells Lorenzo “you’re okay.”
It is not clear in the body camera footage whether or not Lorenzo had the toy gun. So, in this case it’s the officer’s word against the boy’s. Since there was a toy gun found nearby, police see this as a “good shoot.”
Naturally, the officer’s attorney and the department are backing the word of Holcomb and not the boy.
“I have not seen any information that shows anything other than the fact that the suspect was armed at the time he was fleeing the house after the police announced their presence,” the officer’s attorney Curt Dewberry said.
“Sergeant Holcomb could see the suspect had a gun in his hand and gave the suspect verbal commands to drop the gun,” a police statement said without showing any video evidence of this. “The suspect did not comply with the orders and Sergeant Holcomb discharged his firearm and struck the suspect.”
An attorney for Lorenzo, Dan Smolen, sees things differently. Smolen pointed out the fact that Holcomb is heard on the body camera footage, admitting that he knew the kids were playing with “cap guns,” yet he shot anyway.
Kids play with realistic toy guns all the time across this country, it’s why they are made. Most of them, however, are never shot.
“That officer heard what was being fired, acknowledged that it was a toy gun and still fired shots anyway,” Smolen said. “We know what his thoughts were just seconds before the shooting took place.”
“Further, Holcomb had the cover and protection of the wooden fence when he encountered Lorenzo, who was a safe distance away. And there is no evidence that Lorenzo verbally threatened anyone, physically threatened anyone, attempted to evade arrest or otherwise resisted arrest,” he added.
Though Lorenzo denies having the toy gun, his mother noted that even if he did have it, Holcomb gave him no time to respond to the commands.
“Even if he had a BB gun,” Lee said, “you still have a protocol to sit there and ask him and command him to do what you need him to do, and once he’s not following that first command, then you take action on what you need to do from there.”
“It traumatizes me, myself, to understand that: Hey, you were this close from taking my baby’s life — for nothing,” she said.
Lorenzo said he never heard the police officers identify themselves and was simply being a boy playing with other boys when he was shot.
“By the time, I went out the window, I heard a voice say, ‘Freeze!’ and I jumped and looked to the right of me, and then he didn’t even give me no time to do anything — put my hands in the air, anything — and he just fired,” Lorenzo said.
In an interview with CNN, Lorenzo said that if he could talk to Holcomb, he’d tell him “that I’m actually a good kid, that I follow directions and stuff like that. He just didn’t give me time to follow his directions.”
Below is a video that shows what playing with your friends looks like in a police state. Spoiler alert—it can be deadly.

Los Angeles authorities are investigating a woman’s allegation that someone may have put something in her drink, causing her to “black out,” at Paul’s massive house party in Calabasas.
A woman’s allegation that she blacked out after possibly being drugged at Jake Paul’s party at his Calabasas mansion is being taken “very seriously” by the 22-year-old YouTuber, his lawyer stated on Tuesday.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating “a possible single occurrence of unwillful impairment” based on the woman’s complaint filed Sunday, a day after Paul threw the party for rapper Desiigner’s 22nd birthday.
The woman told police that she may have blacked out after “something was put in her drink” at the party, authorities said.
“We take this claim very seriously,” Paul’s attorney, Stanton “Larry” Stein, said. “And we are working with authorities to make absolutely sure we do our part to uncover the truth.”
A representative for Paul, who did not wish to be identified, said that Los Angeles authorities had not yet questioned Paul or even approached him for an interview as part of the investigation.
The representative said that Paul never saw anyone pass out at the party and that he “certainly wasn’t involved” or anywhere around where the woman may have lost consciousness.
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department declined to provide details about the investigation on Tuesday.
Paul’s representative suggested that one could expect at least some of the guests to drink excessively and get sick at a party that was attended by hundreds of young people.
The representative said that Paul’s party planner had hired 38 security officers who checked everybody’s IDs and were stationed both inside and outside Paul’s mansion to help keep the party under control.
The planner had also arranged for an ambulance with paramedics on the driveway because the party featured motocross and boxing events.

Arman Izadi, a nightclub promoter and self-proclaimed “mood director,” said in an Instagram post that he was in charge of Paul’s $500,000 party.
Izadi had previously pleaded guilty in Las Vegas to attempted battery with substantial bodily harm, the Daily Beast reported last year.
Izadi was also arrested in 2013 on charges related to robbery, kidnapping, pimping, and battery after three women testified to a grand jury that Izadi had recruited them at parties and made them work as prostitutes, the Daily Beast reported. Most of the charges against him were later dropped amid allegations of misconduct by one of the Las Vegas detectives working on Izadi’s case.
Izadi didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

A singer who attended Paul’s party on Saturday said that she did not see or hear about anyone being drugged, but that she saw an “inebriated” woman being escorted out of the party by a few security officers.
Rosette Luve said on Tuesday that she saw the woman walking, adding that she looked “super intoxicated.” Luve said that she hadn’t heard about drinks being spiked with drugs and that nothing happened to her girlfriends who “drank all night.”
Another guest at the party, Tasha Mackk, stated that she didn’t see any drugs at the party.
“Just a bar and a good time,” she said.

“It was beyond awful and terrifying to be there during it, and several of my friends were shot,” said a student who survived the shooting.
Two students opened fire Tuesday inside a Colorado charter school near Columbine High School, killing one classmate and injuring eight others before being taken into custody, authorities said.
On Wednesday morning, authorities identified the deceased student as Kendrick Castillo, an 18-year-old senior who was due to graduate this week.
Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said the suspects, identified as 18-year-old Devon Erickson and an unnamed juvenile, were taken into custody without exchanging gunfire with police. Both are students at the STEM School, a K-12 charter in the Denver suburb of Highlands Ranch.
“At the time, the individuals we believed were in custody were two males,” Spurlock said Wednesday morning. It wasn’t until we got to this office that we were able to determine that one of the suspects [the juvenile] was a female.”
One of the shooters was being restrained by a school security officer when sheriff’s deputies arrived. Administrators reported hearing gunshots fired at 1:53 p.m.; deputies arrived on the scene two minutes later.
Spurlock said authorities were still investigating a possible motive.
“We know that two individuals walked into the STEM School, got deep inside the school, and engaged students in two separate locations,” Spurlock told reporters Tuesday night. “There were a number of students that were shot and injured.”
On Wednesday, Spurlock said that at least one student “encountered” the suspects during the shooting, not elaborating on the specifics of exactly what the student did.
“We are going to hear about very heroic things that have taken place at the school,” said Spurlock.
Eight victims, ages 15 and older, were being treated in local hospitals. No employees or teachers were injured in the shooting, Spurlock said.
Littleton Adventist Hospital received five patients. One patient was in a serious condition, while another had their condition downgraded from serious to fair. The three others have been discharged from the hospital.
Linda Watson, a spokesperson for Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Colorado, said the hospital was treating two juvenile victims. One remained in stable condition Tuesday night, while the other was discharged. Another victim was treated at Children’s Hospital of Colorado’s South Campus in Highlands Ranch and later released.
“Quite a few shots were fired, and police officers, sheriff’s officers were on scene almost immediately,” Douglas County Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth told reporters, adding that deputies could still hear gunshots as they arrived at the scene and entered the school.
Spurlock said he believed the deputies’ quick response to the shooting saved lives.
“I want to think that that is something that helped,” he said.
The school does not have a resource police officer assigned to the campus but does have private security, Spurlock said.
He declined to provide additional information about the suspects but said they were not on the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office’s radar. A car with graffiti on it was later removed from the home of one of the suspects.
A motive for the shooting has not been determined, and Spurlock said officials did not have any information about anyone at the school being specifically targeted.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Denver were assisting in the investigation. The White House said President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting.
“Tragically, this community and those surrounding it know all too well these hateful and horrible acts of violence,” Judd Deere, the White House deputy press secretary, said in a statement. “We offer our full support to local law enforcement and first responders and thank them for their heroism.”
The school was placed on lockdown for several hours, according to the Douglas County School District. All other Highlands Ranch schools were placed on lockout.
“It was beyond awful and terrifying to be there during it, and several of my friends were shot,” Lillian Duarte, a student who survived the shooting, told BuzzFeed News. “This was so horrible to me, and it felt surreal to walk out of the building with our hands up in the same way I saw Parkland kids doing on the news.”
More than 1,800 students in elementary, middle, and high school attend STEM School, according to its website.
Nicholson-Kluth said many students self-evacuated after the shooting began. Parents were later reunited with students at a nearby recreation center. Hyoung Chang / Getty Images
Students are escorted to a school bus in front of STEM School Highlands Ranch after the shooting.
Speaking on air to the Denver ABC affiliate, a sixth-grade boy named Christian said he was in study hall when he saw several students running and yelling, “School shooter, school shooter!”
“I’m like, what … is this real or fake?” he said. “I just ran after them. … I just got out of there.”
Rocco DeChalk, who lives down the street from the Highlands Ranch school, said he was working from home when he looked out his window and saw crowds of kids running down the street.
“At first I thought it was a gym class,” DeChalk, 50, told BuzzFeed News.
But then he saw the kids’ faces. They looked nervous and scared.
When he stepped out onto his patio, a neighbor told him there had been a shooting at the school and alerted him to a young man who was sitting in the grass by his mailbox and appeared to have been shot.
DeChalk said he and the boy’s friend helped him into his house.
He said the boy, who he guessed was between 12 and 15 years old, was conscious and able to walk. He had one gunshot wound in his back near his armpit.
“He was having a hard time breathing, so I didn’t ask him any questions,” DeChalk said.
He then waved down a police officer outside, who summoned an ambulance to transport the boy to a hospital.
“It’s just unbelievably scary,” DeChalk said. David Zalubowski / AP
Parents gather in a circle to pray at a recreation center where students were reunited with their parents.
STEM School is located less than 8 miles from Columbine High School, where 13 people were killed by two students on April 20, 1999. The shooting was, at the time, the deadliest in the nation’s history.
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said he was monitoring the situation and making all public safety resources available to assist the Sheriff’s Office.
District officials said the school would be closed for the remainder of the week.
“The heart of all Colorado is with the victims and their families,” Polis said on Twitter.

A touching moment coordinated by two university heads to confer a mom’s degree at her son’s graduation ceremony has gone viral across social media after one school, Central Michigan University, captured the moment and shared it on Facebook over the weekend. Stephan Wilson and his mom, Sharonda, both graduated from two separate universities in Michigan this year. However, their ceremonies fell on the same day. Stephan graduated with a degree in fine arts in musical theater from Central Michigan University. Sharonda was also scheduled to graduate that same Saturday with a bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University. Sharonda decided to skip her own graduation so she could attend Stephan’s. A spokesperson for CMU told BuzzFeed News that the school’s president, Bob Davies, learned about this unfortunate circumstance after a friend of Stephan’s made mention of it the morning of the graduation. “One of Stephan’s friends works in President Davies’ office as a student worker,” said Ari Harris, the assistant communications director for the university. “She saw a post on Stephan’s Facebook page about Mrs. Wilson skipping her ceremony in order to watch Stephan walk.” Davies then placed a call to David Eisler, the president of Ferris State University. Together, the two university heads surprised both Stephan and his mom by presenting Sharonda with her own graduation cap, and a mini ceremony, during Stephan’s graduation.
“On behalf of president Eisler and Ferris State trustees … please move your tassel from your right to your left,” Davies announced to Sharonda as the crowd erupted in applause. Her son cheered on his mom next to her. In a statement provided to BuzzFeed News, Davies said he wanted to make sure the Wilsons both got “the chance to celebrate together as a family” as it was a “milestone achievement.” “The commencement ceremony is a celebration of student achievement and it acknowledges the passion, dedication and enthusiasm required to earn a college degree,” he said. “Sharonda and Stephan both put in the long hours and hard work, and they deserved the chance to celebrate together as a family.”
BuzzFeed News has reached out to Stephan for comment. However, the school said the new graduate may be slow to respond because following the ceremony he immediately “jumped on a bus with the CMU School of Music Chamber Singers to begin a multi-state musical tour.”
Central Michigan University provided BuzzFeed News with a statement on his behalf, in which he thanked both schools. “Earning our college degrees has been an incredible journey for both my mom and I, and it was a blessing to stand beside her and celebrate together. I’m so thankful to President Davies and President Eisler for making this such a special moment for us,” said Stephan. BuzzFeed News has also reached out to Sharonda for comment.

YouTube star Austin Jones was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison Friday for persuading underage girls to send him sexually explicit videos of themselves.
Jones, 26, of Bloomingdale, Illinois, pleaded guilty in February to one count of receipt of child pornography. He admitted in a plea agreement that in 2016 and 2017 he enticed six girls, as young as 14 years old, to produce and send the videos to “prove” they were his “biggest fan.” ADVERTISEMENT
“Production and receipt of child pornography are extraordinarily serious offenses that threaten the safety of our children and communities,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine Neff Welsh said in a sentencing memo. “Jones’s actions took something from his victims and their families that they will never be able to get back.”
Jones, who became famous for his a cappella covers of pop songs, was arrested on child porn charges in 2017, but rumors of his inappropriate behavior with fans circulated years before.
In 2015, several young women began publishing personal accounts, claiming Jones had asked them to make videos twerking for him and that the singer had made them feel uncomfortable.
The allegations caused him to be pulled from the lineup at the Warped Tour that year after more than 9,000 people signed a petition calling for his removal.
In his plea agreement, Jones also admitted to attempting to persuade other underage fans “on approximately 30 other occasions” to send him sexually explicit photos and videos.
According to prosecutors, he also told some of his victims that the videos were part of a modeling opportunity and said he could help them gain followers on social media.
“Today’s sentencing of Austin Jones represents a major step towards justice for the young victims whom he manipulated and exploited,” Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent-in-Charge James Gibbons said in a statement.

A charter plane carrying 143 people slid off a runway and into a river in Jacksonville, Florida, Friday night, injuring 21 people and prompting a massive rescue effort.
The Miami Air International plane was carrying 136 passengers and seven aircrew from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, when it attempted to land at Naval Air Station Jacksonville around 9:40 p.m. The Boeing 737 slid off a runway and came to a stop in the shallow waters of the nearby St. Johns River.
There were no fatalities or critical injuries, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Department said, though 21 people were transported to hospitals and listed in good condition.
“The plane was not submerged. Every person is alive and accounted for,” the sheriff’s office said on Twitter.

Thunderstorms were observed in the area at the time of the incident. The National Weather Service in Jacksonville had warned drivers near the air station to be careful on roads during the brief, heavy downpours.
A passenger who was on the flight told CNN the plane flew through thunderstorms as it neared Jacksonville and “had a really hard landing.”
“We were in water. We couldn’t tell where we were, whether it was a river or an ocean,” Cheryl Bormann said. “There was rain coming down. There was lightning and thunder. And we stood on that wing for a significant period of time. Rescue folks came and eventually someone inflated a life raft that had been on the plane and we began climbing into it. Everybody was helping everybody.”
Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said on Twitter that crews were working to keep jet fuel out of the water. The White House also called to offer help, he added.
In a tweet, Boeing said it was aware of the incident and gathering information. Air station officials said an investigation into the mishap was underway.
“No fatalities reported. We are all in this together,” Curry said.

When firefighters entered the home, they found readings inside of 1,000 ppm — the maximum reading on the meter.
A family of four was found dead in their Ohio home on Thursday, the victims of what authorities believe is a case of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Richard Gabriel Reitter III, 50, and his wife, Jennifer Reitter, 49, were found dead in their Genoa Township home along with their two children, Richard and Grace. The families three dogs also died.
“Our community suffered a terrible loss,” Genoa Township Police Chief Stephen Gammill said at a press conference Friday.
Police checked in on the Reitter family Thursday when relatives contacted authorities after being unable to reach the family since Monday.
Officers were told members of the family had been complaining of illness, sparking their concern.
When police arrived, the home was secure and they encountered a suspicious odor, prompting them to contact fire officials, Gammill said.
“Once personnel got on scene, they suspected a carbon monoxide incident,” Genoa Township Fire Deputy Chief Joseph Ponzi said.
Ponzi noted his department deems 30 parts per million (ppm) for carbon monoxide as potentially harmful. When firefighters entered the home, they found readings inside of 1,000 ppm — the maximum reading on the meter.
At 1,000 ppm, a person can lose consciousness within an hour, Ponzi said.
“It was unsafe for any person to enter that structure,” he said.
Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, and can spark symptoms similar to the common flu, such as dizziness, headache, and nausea.
Winter months tend to be the time officials most often find cases of potential carbon monoxide poisoning due to faulty heating systems, but officials said the chemical can originate from multiple appliances.
Officials are still looking at the source of the carbon monoxide that lead to the family’s deaths, Gammill said.
“We cannot stress enough to have at least one carbon monoxide detector on every level of your home,” Ponzi said.
On Facebook, Holly Reitter paid tribute to her late cousin’s family and urged people to install and check carbon monoxide monitors.
“Please check and double check your detectors or order more if you need to. Life is too short,” she wrote. “Save your life and others by a simple gesture. RIP to my cousin and his family suddenly lost by this silent killer.”

If you’ve ever worried that humanity will ever wipe itself out so completely that they’ll be no record of our civilization for aliens to discover, you can now rest (somewhat) easy.
Even if we blow everything on Earth to smithereens tomorrow, there will likely still be a library of 30,000 books, 5,000 languages, plus a complete copy of Wikipedia, somewhere on the moon.
The only problem: We don’t know exactly where.
The library is a project of the Arch Foundation, the same company that gave Elon Musk a test copy of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy to put aboard his spacebound Tesla Roadster.
The Arch Lunar Library contains 100GB, or 30 million pages of text and pictures, literally embedded in 25 nickel disks in the tiniest type you can possibly imagine. You don’t need anything more specialized than a microscope to read it, and the etchings should survive for billions of years.
This library was supposed to be delivered to the surface of the moon — specifically, the Sea of Serenity — by Israel’s Beresheet Mission last week. The bad news: After a glitch that turned its engine off and on again at the worst possible moment, the Beresheet lander smashed into the moon at 300 miles per hour.
The good news: Those disks were designed to be indestructible. And the Arch Foundation is all but certain its payload survived the crash.
The landing was a little bumpier than expected, but airplane black boxes survive stronger impacts, and our disc is less breakable. Small, light objects, like our 100 gram library, do better in impacts. It was probably thrown a few km away – a 30 million page frisbee on the moon.
— Arch Mission Foundation (@archmission) April 12, 2019
“We have either installed the first library on the moon,” says Arch Mission co-founder Nova Spivack, “or we have installed the first archaeological ruins of early human attempts to build a library on the moon.”
Some other items in that library for future alien archeologists to pore over: David Copperfield’s magic secrets, the Bible, an Israeli time capsule, and a queso recipe from a cafe in Texas.
The Foundation isn’t giving up on its lost moon library — and it wants your help in locating it. Spivack’s team has put together an open Google Doc with all the technical specs of the library alongside all details of the crash provided by SpaceIL, the Israeli nonprofit behind Beresheet. (SpaceIL collaborated with aerospace manufacturer Israel Aerospace Industries and Israel Space Agency, Israel’s NASA, on the lander.)
It’s a math problem, basically, though one unlike any you ever encountered in school: If a spacecraft carrying a 100 gram object crashes on the moon at 300 miles an hour, how far away will that object land?
As the saying goes, “never let a crash on the moon get in the way of a great treasure hunt”
— Nova Spivack (@novaspivack) April 14, 2019
Already one aerospace engineer has suggested that the impact crater should be large enough for the NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to spot — though it’s unlikely to be able to pick out anything as tiny as the little library that could.
SpaceIL has already announced that a second Beresheet mission will be attempted, perhaps with another library on board. In the meantime, as Spivack notes, “when you look at the Moon from now on, realize there is a lost library there containing Wikipedia, 30,000 books, 5,000 languages, and the history of the world.”
Not to mention a recipe for some pretty good queso.

“Who is this alien?” is Mashable’s enduring series about the exceptionally peculiar critters that inhabit a relatively small, ocean-dominated world in the outer realms of the Milky Way galaxy, called Earth. Many of these lifeforms, you’ll find, are quite alien.
Hiding in the nooks and crannies of dead piles of Indonesian coral is a pudgy fish, wholly covered in swirls of orange and white. Seen from the right perspective, the critter might be mistaken for a vibrantly colored brain.
But amid the explosion of whirling lines are cryptic, aquamarine eyes and a camouflaged frown. Inhabiting shallow seas around the tropical Ambon Island, this creature was mostly unknown to the scientific world until 2008.
It’s the psychedelic frogfish.
“It’s an incredibly vibrant frogfish,” said Rachel Arnold, a marine scientist who coauthored the research that identified the kaleidoscopic creature as a new species.
Many frogfish — a stocky group of fish notorious for violently gobbling their prey — are also known for blending into their undersea worlds. Some look like sponges, and others like seaweed, noted Arnold. The psychedelic frogfish — or Histiophryne psychedelica — certainly takes camouflaging to an extreme level. “They do aggressive mimicry,” she said. The fish take on an appearance similar to species of tropical coral with whirling, orange patterns. “It reminded me of many patterns of corals I have seen,” said David Hall, an underwater wildlife photographer who captured the first shots of the frogfish.
A psychedelic frogfish in Ambon, Indonesia.
This allows the lumbering, ungainly fish to hole up in the shadowy coral as unassuming prey comes near. At the right time, perhaps when naive prey swim near or inside a fateful cavern amid the coral, the psychedelic frogfish will promptly “swallow them whole,” said Arnold.
Curiously, when Arnold traveled to Ambon to see these astonishing critters, hiding out amid coral rubble some 10 to 15 feet beneath the ocean surface, the psychedelic frogfish didn’t match the surrounding environment, which was devoid of the brain-like, orange corals that the psychedelic frogfish often resembles.
It’s unknown why the psychedelic frogfish live in these particular dark holes, then, and also why the fish seem to vanish from their Ambon homes for extended lengths of time, only to turn up once again.
“They’re still a bit of an enigma,” said Arnold. “It shows up and disappears for long periods of time.”
What’s more, the fish are fantastically-patterned, but never easy to find here — even when they’re known to be around. “If I had to search for these fish on my own, I would never have found them,” said the photographer Hall, noting that he relied upon a local guide who had previously spotted a psychedelic frogfish.
Though relatively new to science, the psychedelic frogfish are well-known to Indonesian locals — though before Hall no one had a camera in the right place at the right time.
A pair of psychedelic frogfish in Ambon, Indonesia.
“It’s the local people that really knew about its existence,” said Arnold. “The local people really understand more about this fish than we do.”
Yet with limited time diving around these elusive frogfish, Arnold and her team deciphered a good deal about the species. Most known frogfishes have a lure hanging from their head, which they hold out to attract prey, said Hall. But the psychedelic frogfish doesn’t carry a lure. It just waits for unwitting prey to pass by.
“The local people really understand more about this fish than we do”
True to its name, the psychedelic frogfish often “hops” around to get places, using its fins to push off the bottom of the seafloor. Curiously, when egg-bearing females emerge from their dark holes, they wrap their dorsal (back side) and tail fin around a peach-colored clutch of some 200 eggs, looking for safe harbor to place the priceless sacks of life.
Leaving hundreds of eggs on the coral-littered seafloor, however, poses modern-day problems. “Conservation-wise, it’s a pretty big red flag,” explained Arnold, noting that it would be easy for collectors — perhaps eager to capture the hallucinatory fish — to sleuth out the eggs and over-harvest the species.
Each psychedelic frogfish — while all almost fantastical and brilliantly patterned — is markedly distinct. Though, amid the profusion of lines and swirls, their unique line expressions might be indiscernible to the human eye.
“Their striping is like their fingerprint,” said Arnold.

What would happen if an asteroid impacted Earth sorta like a comet did in 1998’s ‘Deep Impact?”
BY RAYMOND WONG 18 HOURS AGO
If an asteroid were ever to be come hurtling towards Earth, what would be the plan to stop it from impacting the planet?
That’s the question NASA and its partners, including the European Space Agency and the U.S.’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), are gathering at the 2019 Planetary Defense Conference in early May to investigate.
During the five day conference, NASA and its partners plan to engage in a “tabletop exercise” that simulates what would happen if scientists and authorities were to learn of a near-Earth Object (NEO) impact scenario.
“A tabletop exercise of a simulated emergency commonly used in disaster management planning to help inform involved players of important aspects of a possible disaster and identify issues for accomplishing a successful response,” says NASA.
In the exercise (detailed by the ESA here), NASA and its partners have to respond to a “realistic — but fictional — scenario” involving a NEO named “2019 PDC,” which has a 1 in 100 chance of impacting Earth in 2027.View image on Twitter
ESA Operations
@esaoperations
Each day of the #PlanetaryDefense Conference, a press release will be put out, updating participants on the hypothetical asteroid #2019PDC – now (hypothetically) hurtling towards Earth. More on this year’s #ImpactScenario on the #rocketscience blog:http://blogs.esa.int/rocketscience/2019/04/25/rolling-coverage-brace-for-hypothetical-asteroid-impact/ …719:57 AM – Apr 27, 201946 people are talking about thisTwitter Ads info and privacy
Armed with all of the hypothetical information about “2019 PDC,” the exercise is intended to see how the various organizations and governments would handle the situation as it unfolds.
“The first step in protecting our planet is knowing what’s out there,” said Rüdiger Jehn, the ESA’s Head of Planetary Defence. “Only then, with enough warning, can we take the steps needed to prevent an asteroid strike altogether, or minimize the damage it does on the ground.”
In such a situation, the ESA says it would live tweet details “so you’ll find out the ‘news’ as the experts do.” And for the hypothetical 2019 PDC asteroid exercise at the conference, the agency will indeed live tweet the series of decided actions as if they are made.
“These exercises have really helped us in the planetary defense community to understand what our colleagues on the disaster management side need to know,” said Lindley Johnson, NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer. “This exercise will help us develop more effective communications with each other and with our governments.”
Despite NASA having participated in six NEO impact exercises before, each scenario is different and the agency says it’s learned that the focus is not always on the asteroid details, even though that’s still crucial to creating a plan to either deflect it or reduce its impact.
“What emergency managers want to know is when, where and how an asteroid would impact, and the type and extent of damage that could occur,” said Leviticus Lewis of the Response Operations Division for FEMA.Paragraph
Well, you know what they say…it’s better to be prepared. At the very least, NASA and friends won’t be panicking as hard if an asteroid were ever to really hit Earth.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London and charged with conspiring to commit computer intrusion. The charge was filed in March 2018 but the federal grand jury case had been kept under seal until his arrest on April 11, 2019, after the Westminster Magistrates’ Court found him guilty of failing to surrender to court. The UK has yet to decide if it will extradite Assange, who faces up to five years in US prison if convicted.
The charge relates to the 2010 release of American files documenting the slaying of civilians and journalists. Former Army intelligence specialist Chelsea Manning was convicted of leaking those files and sentenced to 35 years in prison in 2013. Her sentence was commuted by President Barak Obama in 2017 and she returned to prison in March 2019, held on contempt of court for refusing to testify to a grand jury investigating WikiLeaks.see more on Julian Assange
