It’s Tumblr’s 2024 Year in Review!

Hello, Tumblr. Welcome to your Year in Review. Grab a slice of hear-me-out cake and some tea or other beverage of choice, and settle in for another year’s worth of sweet, sweet data—brought to you by the folks behind your weekly Fandometrics lists.

How does it work, you ask? Well, each year, we collect and categorize data from every post you made, each search, all the tags you used, and each and every like and reblog—to see what you yelled about the most. Lists are grouped by topic using 365 days of data between October 21, 2023, and October 20, 2024. Rankings are based on volume of appearance—not sentiment, importantly—so you might see list entries you Do Not Like that Tumblr as a whole has been vocal about Not Liking this year. We don’t tend to include on-platform events, so while you all booped and BOOped each other to distraction, that won’t show up here. Those joys are simply unquantifiable.

But what can you expect to find? It’s been quite a year. Alongside supporting each other through and discussing world turbulences, you rallied around the things that bring you joy. You polled the heck out of pretty much everything and anything you could think of and created more fanart and fan fic than we could wave a moderately shaped wizard hat at. It's also been another huge year for fictional characters—arguably the best characters out there—so this Year in Review, you’ll find new and returned rankings of fictional characters from movies, video games, TV shows, and anime & manga. And finally, we've made the lists longer, which means you'll have more chance of seeing some of your more niche fandoms reflected in them this year.

I took a part in the traffic twt secret Santa, and got @/dancestilldeath on twitter. :)

They asked for The Renchanting Duo (from 3rd life) or their Last Life Mumbo design so I tried to do both.

Spoilers for secret life session 6

Both her permadeath’s in last life and secret life were from falling and neither were directly observed.

Scott saw her fall but couldn’t see her by the time she died.

Bdubs pushed her off the cliff but again doesn’t see her when she dies.

Last Life|That plus the fact that the reaction to her death in last life was shock at bdubs’ betrayal of the reds and less about her death, followed quickly by bdubs death as well. So it was more “two people just got out” than “Lizzie just got out”. This is the weakest case and it’s just semantics, but stay with me.

Secret Life|The loud sound everyone heard was going to go unrealized. No one hit tab until Scott (the watchers least favorite winner because he doesn’t play their games) told chat. The watchers thought it would be funny if the tree fell in the forest, made a sound, and still was unnoticed.

Bonus points: the nature theme she’s got going for both seasons. Fairy tree fort and pumpkin patch

Plus her death didn’t do the same thing the canary curse does, causing other players to be more careful. Two reds went charging towards a warden.

Something about her going around invisible to cheer herself up, feeling happier unseen, staying quiet when Martyn and Jimmy talk to her, feeling happier unheard. Unobserved. Maybe the watchers playing a warmer/colder game with her emotions.

Actually the only time anyone ever actually witnessed her death was when Joel killed her in last life

Why does Secret Life turn into an wildlife documentary whenever Jimmy shows up. He acts like a literal wolf like he'll circle around his target and show his sword abd be like "wanna go? You wanna fight? Cause I'll fight!" Only to run with his tail between his legs 90% of the time

You know what would be cool? If the Trafficblr community organised a little event or zine where people only wrote in a language that isn't English. It could be your mother tongue or not, I think multilingual native English speakers would be cool too.

It would be a lovely way to promote the diversity of languages and cultures.

On defence of this, my friend and cousin hate musicals, and they both seen at least 3 and are gonna watch more with me.

tgwdlm is soooo funny bc even before the Evil Musical Hivemind lands everyone (except Paul ofc) is already a theater kid. Like okay you’ve got Hidgins which is self explanatory. But then Ted ends up really invested in working boys. Emma (and Zoey/Nora) did/do theater. Bill at least is invested in seeing a musical along with like a few other important side characters. It’s funny bc this is like Not how often theater is normally brought up. It’s like starkid went hmmm the average person consumes what… like a musical a week? been in a few performances throughout their life? Yeah that sounds about right. Like guys Paul’s defining character trait is fucking hating musicals and HE MENTIONS SEEING LIKE THREE OF THEM.
