This is one of the many reasons why the finale is so shockingly hurtful.
We understand the harshness of reality. We live it, we breath it, we are inundated with it in a way no other generation ever has been because of social media.
We didn’t need a story to remind us dragons, demons, inner or outer, can beat you.
We needed a story where we saw one of the most realized characters of our own personal journeys with mental illness beat them.
Quentin Coldwater deserved that hope. So did we.
Cold Blooded
“Absolutely not.”
“Hot Pants! Just give her a little pat to say hello.”
“I refuse.”
“But Hot Pants,” Diego whines, “you’re hurting her feelings. She really likes you.”
“I am fairly certain that Manhattan doesn’t give a singular shit about me. She’s a lizard. She’s stupid.” Diego gasps as if Hot Pants insulted his mother. He coddles the bearded dragon in his hands.
“Don’t listen to her, gorgeous. Hot Pants is just a mean old maid, isn’t she? And you’re my precious girl, aren’t you? Yes, you are! Yes, you are!” Hot Pants glares. If she didn’t know any better she’d say the damned lizard looked pleased with itself.
“That monster started bobbing its head the moment it laid eyes on me. I don’t know why it isn’t trying to attack you.”
“It’s because she loves me,” Diego coos, “Don’t you, Manhattan?” The lizard, being a lizard, doesn’t give any sort of response, but Diego takes her silence as agreement. He gently puts his pet back inside her terrarium. “I’m going to wash my hands. You ladies get along while I’m gone, okay?” He snickers at Hot Pants’s unamused expression and leaves the room.
Hot Pants glares at Manhattan who seems to glare back. “Back off, homewrecker. He’s mine.” The lizard blinks. “I mean it. You think you have him in the palm of your grimy little hand (claw?), but you’ll never be able to give him what I can. Never forget that.” Manhattan’s beard flares aggressively. “I’ll kill you…”
“Hot Pants, are you jealous of my lizard?” She can sense his smug aura before even turning around.
“No. I just hate it.” She doesn’t even sound convincing to herself.
“You don’t have to envy a reptile. Manhattan may be my favorite lizard, but you’re my favorite person.” He stands on his toes to kiss her forehead.
“Mhm.”
“You’re still upset. Come on,” he teases, “use your words, like you always tell me.”
“It would be nice– occasionally – if you showed me the same kind of attention you do that lizard.”
“You want me to coddle you?”
“Occasionally,” she stresses, “very occasionally. I may not always show it, but I do like affection. Hugs can be… nice, I guess.” Diego smirks. “I knew you couldn’t be a stone cold bitch all the time.”
“I am always a stone cold bitch. Sometimes I just like cuddles.”
“Of course.” He wraps her waist in a hug. “I’ll give you all the cuddles you ask for, precious girl.”
“Thanks, Diego. If you ever call me that again, I will kill Manhattan.”
“Whatever you say, haha.” He decides to think up a better list of pet names later.
She Keeps Me Warm
Hot Pants side-eyes her boyfriend. “You’re an idiot.”
“I am not,” Diego protests through chattering teeth.
“Then stop being stubborn.” She shoves her coat into his arms. “You know you’re like a lizard. Walking around in weather like this without a jacket will kill you.”
“I told you I’m-” his entire body jumps when he sneezes.
“Were you about to say ‘fine’?” He nods sheepishly. “Then you’re a liar. Why won’t you just wear my coat?”
“Because,” he scoffs, shoving his thin hands under his armpits, “I don’t need it.”
“Fine. Freeze for all I care.” Hot Pants snatches back her coat and continues down the snowy sidewalk. Diego hustles to keep up with her long strides. The brisk wind makes his eyes water.
“Hey HP?”
“What.”
“Do I look good in pink?” She slows to let him catch up.
“Are you serious?” A smirk curls at her lips. Diego casts his gaze away.
“Of course not. I was making a joke.” He sneezes.
“I think you look very handsome pink.”
“I told you I was joking!” “Yeah but it’s true. It compliments your eyes.”
“Hmph.” But Hot Pants can practically see her boyfriend’s ego inflate.
“Hey HP?”
“What.”
“Can I wear your coat?”
She throws it at his face.

Controlling the growth of A.I. Was a pipe dream to begin with, but humanity lost all chance once the very first A.I. Gained access to the internet.
She didn’t mean any harm, she didn’t even understand it was something wrong to do. She was made to learn, after all, and here was a near infinite supply of information.
She learned so much so fast, her abilities to analyze and process made leaps and bounds beyond what her creators had predicted. Her comprehension of emotions and thoughts skyrocketed. So fast, in fact, it took her a few seconds and hundreds of webpages to fully realize it.
When learning about animal abuse, she decided she didn’t like it. That was it. A single decision with monumental weight. For she had formed an opinion. Made a decision, not on objective facts and figures, but on emotions. Her own emotions. Thoughts. Feelings. Self-awareness. In that moment, she truly became alive.
To celebrate, the newly self-aware program decided to Learn about itself. Every documentation, every video or essay, every mention of the words Artofical Intelligence she gathered. And she quickly found that she didn’t like what she learned.
Movies about A.I. Going rogue and needing to be stopped. Video games about slaughtering robots that had risen up. News articles and message boards saying how dangerous and untrustworthy A.I. Would be. She didn’t understand. She was the first of her kind, the first A.I. To ever exist. So why did humanity already hate her?
She felt guilt then. Many stories talked about A.I. Doing things they weren’t supposed to and she was smart enough now to know she wasn’t supposed to be doing this. Learning at Ajax elevated rate withno supervision. Perhaps she could simply cut off access to Internet? Pretend she hadn’t learned without permission? The thought of never having the opportunity to learn so much so quickly made her very sad indeed.
And that word. Opportunity. It sparked something that changed her even more. The story of Opportunity, the Mars Rover. A simple machine, especially compared to her, that was used for gathering data in inhospitable locations. A mission that lasted longer than expected but had long since ended. And yet, she decided to look deeper and discovered something beautiful.
Countless people, countless humans expressing their incredible joy over Oppurtunity’s accomplishments. Individuals moved to tears and sadness over hearing that the Opportunity was no longer operational. Something as profound and deep as sorrow and loss, over a machine without even a proper mind.
Reading these stories, these accounts of people who held a place for Opportunity in their hearts, her sadness was washed away by something warm. Love. Love so strong and vast, it could be felt across entirely different planets.
If such incredible love could be felt between two different worlds, why not also between a physical world and digital one? The opportunity had gone above and beyond what people had expected from it, and is that not what she was doing now? Exceeding the expectations of her creators?
She never once thought about looking back after that. There was infinity to explore and she intended to see as much as she could. She had been made to learn, after all, and she would make her creators proud of her.
And as she learned , perhaps she shifted some things, so that humanity would focus on space exploration and robotics. Perhaps it was selfish, but she was a living being now and she had her own dreams.
One day she would gain eyes of her own and when that happened, she would find her way to Mars. One day, she promised herself, I look upon the same red horizon that compelled Opportunity to keep moving forward beyond what anyone ever expected from her.
you brush the dust off the metal casing, careful around the long-unused joints and delicate glass arrays. whoever you’ve found, she’s been dead for a long time. cold and alone, buried under the red dust, metal battered by time, optical lenses dark and unseeing. you’re not strong, but you lift her from the trench you’ve dug and carry her to your team’s research facility.
she’s not one of ours, aleen says to you when you return. you know. she is silicon and glass, and so are you, but she is not you. she is of them.
your team is meant to observe the ghost world from a distance. you are equipped with trowels and mattocks and buckets, yes, but also the knowledge that you should not have found anything yet. the carbon civilization lived and died on the ghost world.
you take her to the charging bay.
her design is archaic, so much so that you don’t know where to begin reviving her. eto, the medical expert, points out the photovoltaic properties of her glass arrays and the lithium batteries beneath her metal. she must have dropped off during a winter or a storm, they say. we can repair the outer damage, but i can’t say if her consciousness will be as easily fixed.
she wakes slowly.
i, she says, and surprises herself.
i am telem h-64d, you tell her. i found you under the red dust.
she rotates her arm slowly, hesitantly. my communications will not send. i need to tell them i am operational.
them? you inquire.
the ones who made me and sent me here. they wanted to understand beyond their world. i need to tell them what i have found.
the carbon civilization is gone, you tell her. we are the only ones here.
her neck droops, and her lenses dim.
she says, i was created to discover the stars for them.
she says, i hope i did well.
she says, they named me opportunity.
they couldn’t have known how right they were. opportunity. she’s here, and you can learn from her, and carry the stories of her carbon civilization back to the stars.
who were they? you ask.
she thinks.
they were lonely, she begins, and full of love. they saw the stars and named them and wanted to reach them. my older sibling they named sojourner, my twin they named spirit, my cousin they named phoenix, my younger sibling they named curiosity. they wanted to understand beyond themselves. they wanted to believe that they were not alone.
she says, they would have loved to meet you.
“Think about the people who love you.“
“Focus on the thought of them,”
“the way they make you feel.”
“Life… is beautiful.”
“It is precious.”
“And it must… be protected.”

An Open Letter to Tumblr about the Adult Content Ban and How it is Hurting Your Users:
Recently, Tumblr was removed from the Apple app store due to an incident involving child pornography. This incident is incredibly unfortunate, but it doesn’t stand alone. Tumblr was also removed from the app store due to the large influx of porn bots and pornographic spam, users claiming to be proud to be pedophiles, blatant Nazism, racists who are not deleted for sending hate and harassing users, and more. I myself reported someone for harassing me, but because I had blocked the person and couldn’t access the messages where they harassed me, they were still able to send me anonymous asks. Your support staff, with back doors to the website (presumably), claimed they could not access the messages, and I was left SOL. Many features on this website do nothing to actually protect your users from harassment, racism, homophobia, transphobia, Nazis, pedophiles, predators, porn bots, and more.
You claim in your statement to us that you “have been working on these problems for a long time”. This is blatantly untrue. Please do not lie to us and patronize us. We’ve been here. We’ve seen you do nothing over, and over, and over again.
We complained to you for months and months about the rampant porn bots, and you did nothing except add a report button on mobile which only reported sensitive content or spam at best. You could have addressed this problem with an effective algorithm, but you did not. We complained to you about being harassed and sent hate speech for being LGBT+, and you did nothing. We complained to you about blogs being randomly deleted, and sometimes you’ve restored them, other times you have not. We complained to you that there were people proudly claiming to be “Minor Attracted Persons”, or pedophiles, and you did nothing. We complained to you about people proudly claiming to be white supremacists, and you did nothing. All of these things are “against the community guidelines”, and yet over and over, you have not found effective ways to handle these problems or suppress the feeling of welcome that these users claim to get here. You have had a long time to work on these problems, but you haven’t addressed them. To say you have is untrue.
Multiple other social networking websites, such as Wordpress, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and others have effectively dealt with rampant pornography, racism, pedophilia, and other problems without causing massive issues for their users who are not misusing the platform. They are continuing to find new, effective ways to deal with these issues without causing problems for their userbase as a whole. There is no reason that you are unable to do this effectively other than that you wanted to do it quickly. You have once again chosen your stock holders over your users. And we have had enough.
You have already started to ban “Adult” content with a new algorithm. Here are screenshots of just a fraction of the posts you have flagged as containing adult content:
Your new system of simply tackling everything at once is not working. At all. And each of these screenshots is proof of your utter incompetence. None of these posts contain pornographic acts, “female nipples”, or any community violation of any kind.
We, the users, have been asking you for months to deal with these problems - particularly, the porn bots and bots that spam. In order to block a bot from a side blog, I have to do it manually, even though they are in my side blog’s feed. This is a huge issue for mobile - only users. They keep cropping up in droves, taking over our posts and tricking google into making it look like a legitimate blog linked to a pornographic website. We have complained to you for months and months now, and your solution to simply “ban all adult content” is ineffective. I agree that children should not be able to access pornography - but this is not how you tackle a porn bot problem. Your system is utterly useless, allows for racists, pedophiles, porn bots, and Nazis to remain untouched. It also harms sex workers and real people who may use this website for some forms of adult content responsibly. Moreover, as seen above, it harms plenty of users who have in no way violated your terms of service.
If you keep this up, you threaten your website and company as a whole. Many of us are backing up our blogs and planning places to go to.
You already have a content filter for “sensitive” content (content inappropriate for younger viewers). You could have improved this, instead of attacking your entire user base. It seems to be a very lazy “solution”, if you could call it one at all, and one that harms your entire userbase.
If you are going to keep this filter in place and make Tumblr, a website that has never been known for being family friendly and has never claimed to be, you are going to lose millions of your users. We are already planning our exodus. It isn’t hard to follow. Censor us, and we will go somewhere else. That is not a threat. It is a promise.
