Continuing On That Note I Feel That There Is Also Horror In Surviving These Encounters. There The Death

Continuing on that note I feel that there is also horror in surviving these encounters. There the death that’s awful but there is also fear in knowing that you experienced that while all others died. We live in a society we’re people are getting hurt left and right while others never can’t even imagine that pain. It hurts to know people died, or even that people live through this and we just sit here, as they do work that will probably bring us something that we won’t even think is that important, even with all the blood it holds.

changes and trends in horror-genre films are linked to the anxieties of the culture in its time and place. Vampires are the manifestation of grappling with sexuality; aliens, of foreign influence. Horror from the Cold War is about apathy and annihilation; classic Japanese horror is characterised by “nature’s revenge”; psychological horror plays with anxieties that absorbed its audience, like pregnancy/abortion, mental illness, femininity. Some horror presses on the bruise of being trapped in a situation with upsetting tasks to complete, especially ones that compromise you as a person - reflecting the horrors and anxieties of capitalism etc etc etc. Cosmic horror is slightly out of fashion because our culture is more comfortable with, even wistful for, “the unknown.” Monster horror now has to be aware of itself, as a contingent of people now live in the freedom and comfort of saying “I would willingly, gladly, even preferentially fuck that monster.” But I don’t know much about films or genres: that ground has been covered by cleverer people.

I don’t actually like horror or movies. What interests me at the moment is how horror of the 2020s has an element of perception and paying attention.

Multiple movies in one year discussed monsters that killed you if you perceived them. There are monsters you can’t look at; monsters that kill you instantly if you get their attention. Monsters where you have to be silent, look down, hold still: pray that they pass over you. M Zombies have changed from a hand-waved virus that covers extras in splashy gore, to insidious spores. A disaster film is called Don’t Look Up, a horror film is called Nope. Even trashy nun horror sets up strange premises of keeping your eyes fixed on something as the devil GETS you.

No idea if this is anything. (I haven’t seen any of these things because, unfortunately, I hate them.) Someone who understands better than me could say something clever here, and I hope they do.

But the thing I’m thinking about is what this will look like to the future, as the Victorian sex vampires and Cold War anxieties look to us. I think they’ll have a little sympathy, but they probably won’t. You poor little prey animals, the kids will say, you were awfully afraid of facing up to things, weren’t you?

I miss the old days when we could go into the woods to fight monsters and undiscovered creatures and would be seen as heroes. Now when I do it they say it’s animal cruelty, bitch I go in and challenge a bear in its own language, they know what they’re doing and I never kill them. We lost so much excitement now that we don’t go missing for months and coming back with an unconscious creature with us both covers in wounds.

This, this is the Batman that we don’t get to see as much anymore. The hero that can show that someone broke doesn’t have to break others to fix themselves. Someone who doesn’t stop criminals by beating them into submission but by helping them so they can heal. He is the hero that can show that bad people could just be hurt and just need help. I’ve seen people say that marvel is better because they deal with real problems while dc is more fantastical, but the thing I always see when looking at both is that marvel is how people are, struggling to be kind always trying, even when they fight on ideals they are kind. But dc is what we wish things were, an ideal world where there are hundreds of people all trying to see people and make things better and showing that everyone can change for the better. We lost both of those things but thankfully they are starting to come back , a little slow for Batman but I can see it, and I can’t wait for the old hero’s to be good again.

I am. So fucking tired of Batman being portrayed as a bad parent and a toxic person. And it’s so goddamn widespread. Fuck, it might be as bad as the whole “Superman being a kindhearted Boy Scout is boring” take.

I get it, the man’s not exactly stable, he watched his parents get murdered in front of him and spent years of his life training to fight crime dressed like a giant scary bat, of course he’s not perfect.

But to say that Bruce Wayne isn’t caring, isn’t empathetic, to call him abusive…it just misses the point of who the character is to me.

Why do you think he fights crime? Yes, part of it is because he’s bitter and sad because his parents were cruelly ripped from him as a child, and he’s lashing out against the corruption of his city. It’s arguably the focus of his earlier years. But he learns to become more than that. He learns to bring hope, a chance to be better.

Harleen Quinzel is the Joker’s right hand lady, but she’s also a victim of an abusive relationship and a woman with a surprisingly strong moral compass and a love for animals, and wants to get better. That’s why we see time and time again that he has a noticeable soft spot for her, because he knows that she’s a good person at her core.

I Am. So Fucking Tired Of Batman Being Portrayed As A Bad Parent And A Toxic Person. And It’s So Goddamn

Harvey Dent is a man who will decide someone’s fate on a coin toss(and a pretty inaccurate depiction of DID), but he’s also Bruce’s close friend who clearly needs help learning to live with his condition, rather than try to get rid of it, and someone who he still goes out of his way to visit, even after everything, because he recognizes he’s not just a criminal with a weird gimmick, he’s a man who is struggling with a condition that he’s mishandled his whole life.

I Am. So Fucking Tired Of Batman Being Portrayed As A Bad Parent And A Toxic Person. And It’s So Goddamn

Victor Fries is a cold, emotionless man who will callously discard allies and blame them for being careless, but he’s also a man who’s either lashing out because he had the love of his life taken from him, or just desperate to make sure she isn’t taken from him, and is willing to do anything just to guarantee her survival. Of course Batman would understand, his whole life was defined by having people he loved taken away from him.

I Am. So Fucking Tired Of Batman Being Portrayed As A Bad Parent And A Toxic Person. And It’s So Goddamn

Even the Joker, arguably one of the most morally bankrupt characters in all of fiction, is someone that Batman has offered a chance to. After the guy shoots the daughter of his friend, a girl he cared for like she was his own kid, and paralyzes her from the waist down, he tells the Joker that he doesn’t want to hurt him. He wants to get him help. He looks at this monster who has taken countless lives and says “You don’t have to be alone.”

I Am. So Fucking Tired Of Batman Being Portrayed As A Bad Parent And A Toxic Person. And It’s So Goddamn

For fuck’s sake, he sat with Joe Chill in his last moments so that he wouldn’t be alone. Joe Chill, the man who murdered his parents, who took so much from him, the person responsible for all of the misery and suffering he’s gone through. And he sits with the man to comfort him while dies. Do you know how much emotional intelligence and maturity that must take? To comfort someone who arguably ruined your life?

I Am. So Fucking Tired Of Batman Being Portrayed As A Bad Parent And A Toxic Person. And It’s So Goddamn

And you’re gonna tell me the man who did that would abuse his kids?

I Am. So Fucking Tired Of Batman Being Portrayed As A Bad Parent And A Toxic Person. And It’s So Goddamn

That he’d hold up the young man whose death was his greatest failure, the boy he grieved, and say this?

I Am. So Fucking Tired Of Batman Being Portrayed As A Bad Parent And A Toxic Person. And It’s So Goddamn

That he’d look his goddamn son in the eyes and say this to him?

I Am. So Fucking Tired Of Batman Being Portrayed As A Bad Parent And A Toxic Person. And It’s So Goddamn

Why the FUCK do you think he took in Dick Grayson in the first place? It wasn’t because he saw the kid and thought “Ah. A potential soldier.”, it was because he saw a boy experiencing the same heartbreaking loss he had so many years ago, and wanted to make sure he didn’t end up as bitter and miserable as he was.

I Am. So Fucking Tired Of Batman Being Portrayed As A Bad Parent And A Toxic Person. And It’s So Goddamn

Why do you think he smiled when Tim Drake presented him a broken watch for Father’s Day? Because he was just happy to see the boy alive and safe.

I Am. So Fucking Tired Of Batman Being Portrayed As A Bad Parent And A Toxic Person. And It’s So Goddamn

DAMIAN LITERALLY POINTED AT A COW AND SAID “I’m keeping her. She’s Bat-Cow.” AND BRUCE JUST WENT WITH IT. DIDN’T EVEN NEED TO ARGUE WHY BRUCE SHOULD LET HIM KEEP HER. HE SAID “this cow is my pet now” AND BRUCE SAID “aight, bet”.

The thing about Batman is that he wants to make sure nobody else ends up feeling the way he does. That’s not just about stopping a mugger so a boy’s parents aren’t gunned down. It’s about giving his loved ones the support and care that he couldn’t have, because it was taken from him. It’s about comforting someone who just went through a traumatic experience and letting them know that they’re going to be okay. It’s about going to someone locked away in a cell who thinks that they’re a lost cause and a burden to society and telling them that he wants to help them get better. It’s about EMPATHY and COMPASSION.

That’s what makes him a HERO. He’s meant to inspire us, to show us that we can have that same empathy for others around us, that we can turn our suffering into hope for a better future.

I just wish more people at DC would start recognizing that. But I might as well follow that example myself. Maybe through this struggle of having to see this hero mistreat the people around him and act like a grade-A jackass, people will start to recognize that missing compassion, and slowly but surely, it might come back. After all, what is this post, if not trying to bring attention to the matter in the hopes of fixing it?

Probably not the best place to put it, but today for some reason I feel like complaining about it, so I guess it’s coming onto Tumblr now… so here is the story of how I got kicked out of the Colosseum in Rome when I was nine years old.

Somethings the say, about 5 1/2 years ago my family decided to go on a trip to the area of Italy, Rome, France and a couple other places in that area that I can’t remember. But they’re not important. What’s important is that I was (and still am) a energetic, jumpy and nerdy kid. The flight was an overnight flight from California to Rome. And my small dumbass couldn’t go to sleep because 1. I didn’t want to and 2. (and this is no fault of his) The man sitting next to me, was watching Star Wars. In Italy it is daytime when it’s night time and my sleep schedule is already complete and utter crap.

So with that all nighter my family decides all together with my agreement that we should go explore Rome. After spending most of the day sightseeing, he finally arrived at the Colosseum. Because of the very little amount of energy already had and all the walking, I got really sleepy. So while my parents can go and keep exploring the Colosseum and my Tia and my siblings decide to stay with me until I wake up.

Cue to me, and the small group of my family, being forced out of the Colosseum for some reason and we don’t speak Italian (which they were speaking to us for some reason, even though we question them in English), so we don’t know where this one guy working there was shoving us out. The one thing we do now is that I needed to use the bathroom. And not in the usual little sense of it probably be good to go soon, no, this was if I didn’t go in the next couple minutes, I would crap my pants. We try to tell him this, so that if they do show us our at least we’ll just have to wait for our parents to figure things out, but no!

He fucking kicks us out and forces me and my brother to wander around through bars, stores and other places to try to see if they speak English to tell us directions and/or have a bathroom!!!

After waiting outside for maybe about two hours our parents finally came back out. We go to confront the guy that kicked us out for why he kicked it out. In the entire conversation we had with him, he only lied!!

He didn’t want to directly speak to us, so we had to have one of the workers translate what he was saying. And then he said that us, the two kids, who were too distracted on the phone to do anything being my siblings, one who was asleep (me) and another, my Tia who is a full grown adult that looks and is someone who could never tell a lie or do something bad, had tried to steal something from someone purse!!

I didn’t completely blame him in the moment until later, when two things became apparent to me

1. Where I were sleeping and my family was waiting with me was in NO area near anyone.

And 2. The Colosseum has the special types of tours that aren’t part of the normal tours, and apparently from what my parents told me the place that we were sitting was in the way what is a Tours in someway.

I know I may just still be mad about it after a long time, but I don’t think that security card thought that we were causing any problems. He was a paid off or told to move us for no reason other than that we were in the way of making more money!!

And I think the worst crime with that not just did he kick us out for no reason, but he kicked us out and left us to wonder for about half an hour trying to find a bathroom whole nine-year-old felt like he was gonna burst. So if the guy made a mistake I’m sorry that I’m mad, but if he didn’t, I’m sorry that I hate him.

I only really felt like putting it here can understand my freaking irritation with the Colosseum now.

Jasons dressed in a shitty made Shrek suit

Duke, filming a TikTok walking through the halls of Wayne Manor: “I’ve never understood why people want to know what it’s like living with the Wayne’s.”

He walks past a dark, candle lit room. Dick, Tim, Steph, Cass, and Damian all stand in a circle around Jason. They hold hands and rhythmically chant out the words to Smashmouth’s “All Stars.”

Duke: “Like, they’re just regular people doing regular people things. They aren’t aliens, you know?”

Duke cracks at the last second, laughing at their skit.

I’m betting that when Barry got his super speed, or even Wally gets super speed. They become more organized now they can do it in two seconds. And for Perry I think he just assumes that Clark tries to fight super villains and gets knocked out, given the amount of good energy coming out of him.

Love the idea of the League members realizing that certain things about each other are lies. Like they think Barry, who's perpetually late (on purpose) is probably chaos incarnate in his lab, but they find out he's meticulous, organized and one of the best CSIs anyone's ever worked with.

When they call Perry to cover for Clark (he got knocked out of commission during a fight and is recuperating via sun lamps for a few weeks minimum), they figure Clark going absent out of nowhere will send up alarm bells (especially as Hal's handling the call, Batman is also out of commission). But it turns out Perry's entirely unsurprised and just orders them to tell Clark he better have one hell of a draft ready when he's back and also to take it easy (though none of them agree if they heard the last part).
