generally speaking i think miya chinen is a stellar character, but what i really like about him is that he uniquely and subtly subverts the ‘younger character who is unnecessarily mean to the main cast but is secretly revealed to have a heart of gold by the end of the anime’ trope by overtly caring about the other characters from like. the moment he appears on screen.
like yes, he’s cold and cocky, he calls people slimes, and his favorite pastime is tormenting reki— but he’s also pretty bad at pretending like he thinks he’s too good at skateboarding. he’s bad at pretending he hates his friends. and i think that’s where he differs quite a bit from the normal trope. miya doesn’t really think he’s better than anyone, and that becomes abundantly clear very quickly.
he’s only mean to reki because he sees potential in him, to the point that miya wants to see reki continue skating, wants to see him improve— but he doesn’t want to say that out loud, so he instead hides behind insults. he cares very deeply about reki’s opinions on his own skating and is sad when reki stops showing up at S to watch him. even just as a person, he cherishes reki as a good friend who promised to stick by his side no matter how great he got at skateboarding. even at crazy rock when miya skates with reki and langa for the first time, he asks langa, “are you really the one who beat shadow? because that slime back there (reki) was actually better than you.”
and when it comes to others, he practically wears his heart on his sleeve if you know where to look. he loses his first race against langa only because he stopped to warn langa that the rails he was skating on were broken. it’s his idea to go to the hot spring to heal reki’s injury. he has fun skating with everyone in the beach episode. he takes the time to teach reki and langa new tricks. he waits for reki in the hospital after his race with adam, and shows up when shadow’s in the hospital. he eats kojiro’s food without complaining at all. he roots for his friends and worries about their well-being.
he is literally a bundle of love!! and he doesn’t hesitate to show it when it matters most, even if he does sometimes hide under layers of aggression!! i love him

Demon Slayer 👺🎴🔥I combined two pieces for this one, “St. George” by Solomon J Solomon and “Michael defeats Satan” by Guido Reni. I love the motif of Tanjiro holding Nezuko while slaying Muzan. I’m a little sad his katana wouldn’t work for this piece (as katanas are shorter in terms of swords and are typically wielded with both hands contrary to western swords) But I love how it turned out regardless! I love Nezuko’s little manicure 💅 and I chose to go with Tanjiro’s less controversial earrings. Muzan doesn’t look half bad down there 😳

Concept: When Kenji first joined the Agency of all the people he could stick close too, Dazai was surprised it was him.
That wasn’t too say he didn’t like Kenji, far from it. The kid was sunshine incarnate and Dazai happily informed him about the city.
And maybe made up a few things but he always said when he did.
It did make him wonder why him of all people though he didn’t ask. He had grown to enjoy Kenji’s company and didn’t want to scare him off.
It was all a big mystery until Dazai learned of the circumstances that made Kenji join in the first place.
Then it all fell into place.
“Who did you lose?” Asked Dazai one day out of the blue. It was probably a bit too blunt but Kenji always seemed to appreciate that approach.
And just for a second the ever present smile on Kenji’s face fell. The light in his eyes dimmed and being the cause of it made Dazai legitimately feel bad for it.
“My best friend”
Dazai smiled not out of pity but out of a shared understanding few could ever reach.
“Me too.”

On Jun'ichiro Tanizaki--
You know, a lot of people dispel the theory of the Tanizakis having some dark horrific past or hiding secrets because of Jun'ichiro in the light novels consistently talking about in the fact that he's "just an average guy, with no dark past or horrific trauma. just a normal guy."
Thing is, he states it a biiit too much. Plus we know that canonically, his entrance exam for the agency was "so horrific and traumatising that he buried the memories in his subconscious", so even with just that, we know he's not exactly being truthful about having "absolutely no trauma".
Other thing is, the irl counterpart of Jun'ichiro Tanizaki had quite the penchant for unreliable narrators. AKA, the narrators of his stories were, a lot of the time, unable to be fully counted as truthful due to the warped nature of their own minds/reality, for one reason or another. And now, wouldn't you say that Jun'ichiro could be counted as an unreliable narrator?
I mean, it's common for trauma survivors to lock away the memories of traumatic experiences, not only of what happened during them but also sometimes that they even happened at all. And he already has an account of doing so, as mentioned just previously.
Another thing though, not just the trauma but the "average guy" bit too, he was referred to by the CREATOR OF BSD as "the character closest to evil" in the ADA?????? Like,,,, there's an ex-mafia executive with HOW many listed crimes (AND THOSE AREN'T EVEN COUNTING THE STUFF ANGO ERASED)??? And you're telling me passive soft-boy ginger over here is WORSE? And if you know about the eye symbolism in the manga,,,, HIS EYES GET DARKER THAN DAZAI'S SOMETIMES.
Tanizaki has absolutely NO moral code - like literally has the moral code of DAZAI. Tanizaki strives to do good PURELY because of his sister, but even with that if he has even a half-decent reason to throw all good intentions out the window, he will do it with NO hesitation. Let's bring up the Higuchi encounter right at the start of the series. He flips his fucking shit the second Naomi gets hurt, and gets around Higuchi with his ability and attacks her from behind, trying to strangle her. But how does he try to strangle her, specifically? Generally, when strangling someone, the usual thought is just to squeeze their neck, kinda unspecifically, ya know? But when Tanizaki did it, he went straight for her windpipe.
He fucking pressed his fingers down on her windpipe specifically. On the sides of the neck are veins, so when choking someone safely as a sexual thing, you go simply for the sides of the neck to block blood flow and get your partner light headed without actually ensuring they'll get hurt by it and making sure their breathing isn't obstructed. But the windpipe is where you go to kill a person. He did not want to just choke her out, he wanted to fucking murder her. May I add that this wasn't even self defense by this point? She wasn't even really threatening Naomi at this point, he went to do that for revenge.
And I bring up next the guild arc. While the two from the guild had Naomi and her friend, as well as Tanizaki and Kunikida, captured, they threatened to take Naomi and Tanizaki used his ability to get the two guild members hit by a truck. But why I bring this up is because he hasn't even just hurt the attackers this time. That driver did not get out uninjured. Who knows if he even got out at all. In that moment, Tanizaki attempted to kill 3 people, 1 of which was a completely innocent driver who had nothing to do with the situation.
Then if we wanna talk about the cannibalism arc,,,, woo boi. During the cannibalism arc, he got held captive by the fucking Port Mafia's Black Lizard, and when they threatened his sister he went "I'll fucking kill you all, don't test me." He was basically at their mercy, and still threatened and genuinely scared them. He managed to SNEAK UP ON and SCARE Gin. Just, yk, the BEST ASSASSIN IN THE ENTIRE PORT MAFIA
In fact, he managed to SNEAK AWAY and get ALL THE WAY TO THE BOSS' ROOM WITHOUT BEING CAUGHT. He stood over the guy's fucking bed with a knife ready to plunge it into the guy's heart without hesitation or guilt - not even self defense, just because "someone has to die, and I've decided it's going to be him". He only failed in doing so because Kouyou showed up, and might I say it took a fucking EXECUTIVE to stop him from assassinating Mori.
Mofo went "alr, i bought time for the others to escape………………………………imma go try to kill mori now lol"
His ability "isn't suited for fighting", my ass. Just an "average guy", huh? He has absolutely no actual combat training that we know of. Plus he's just so mentally unstable. The guy's teetering on the edge of his sanity the entire goddamn series. Guy heard "I don't want to join the Port Mafia" and went "Why? I'll do it" Our Jun'ichiro "self-proclaimed average guy" Tanizaki played a terrorist bomber scarily well in like the first episode or two.......
Beast TaniAku clears every other ship, and it's not even close.
This duo completely and utterly captivated me, everything about them lifts my heart to Heaven.
"Oh, he's the only one who makes me feel human," well, Tanizaki was the first person to show Akutagawa kindness and friendship. The first one to sympathize with Akutagawa's pain, truly the first one to bring out the humanity in him.
"Oh, he'd do crazy shit for me," Tanizaki has a non-combat ability and no real fighting skills, but he still pulled up at the Mafia Headquarters and took hostage an assassin, all to show Akutagawa that he "wasn't alone."
"Oh, he's just as insane as I am, he gets me," Tanizaki was the only one who consistently supported Akutagawa's desire to take revenge on Dazai. He told Akutagawa, over and over again, to forget his duty as an agency member and to show no mercy towards the one who hurt him.
"Oh, our abilities are so compatible," if you think Rashomon is dangerous, wait until you're not sure where the sharp limbs are attacking you from.
And their dynamic in the beginning??? Tanizaki being so shy and scared, Akutagawa being mad because he was rough with Naomi?? The questions and awkwardness, but then the easy friendship?? Tanizaki giving his stamp with no conditions?? Akutagawa promising he would be the first to know when he found Gin??
They're so cute and lovely and happy and iconic and I adore them so much, because their meeting wasn't something extraordinary or fated or tragic or loud– it was just two people who found comfort and strength in each other.

I love the second panel, mithrun's past self looking at him like "this bitch..." is so incredible ryoko kui it's a shame you'll be known for writing one of the most rich and detailed fantasy settings in all of manga bc you're so good at writing visual gags
