Thirteenth Doctor era + John Mulaney quotes
Her hair was a warning and a promise and just,
So dearly hers I couldn't help but love it.
This is the second day I've spent trying to wear black nail polish. It's so hard getting it to look both good and properly black without getting a goopy mess. Props to everyone who can do this easily

Devotion, Ocean Vuong
The Master was back. Â
The Doctor was walking around her TARDISâs console, halfheartedly flipping switches and tracing buttons. Â Her mind was a million miles away, but she didnât want anyone to see her sitting still and ask questions. Â They were the one thing she really couldnât handle right now. Â Actually, she really couldnât handle a lot of things at the moment, but she could only cop to one before the doubts poured and rushed into her very old mind. Â
Honestly, she should have seen this coming. Â No matter how many times she lost him, the Master always returned like a psychotic yo-yo. Â It doesnât matter how far they come, how bloody close she gets to feeling decent about their chances and herself for once in her life. Â It doesnât matter, because in the end, he always dies and he always comes back trying to take over the world again. Â The whole situations kinda like a rubber band really. Â You can move forward, but in the end, you pull too far and you end up back at square one, fingers smarting and cursing yourself. Why couldnât she learn? Â Why couldnât she let Master go? Â
She remembered every time she had seen him, every time he had saved her with the âintentionâ of killing her later. Â She remembered him calling her, telling her he was alive. Â Sheâd said it was unfortunate. Â She remembered further than that. Â Remembered the Academy. Â Running with him. Â Not running away. Â There wasnât anything scary or shameful enough yet. Â Not running to anything. Â As far as they understood, this would last forever, nothing would flicker or fade. Â She remembers messing with his experiments, remembers him showing up in the middle of the night. Â
She remembers how desperate she was seeing him again. Â Her what tenth? Â Eleventh? These regenerations were really starting to wear on her. Â But whatever it was, whenever she was seems irrelevant, because he was there. Â He was there, with hatred in his heart and drumming in his head and he was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Â Heâd missed Master so much. Â Practically begged. Â Letâs run away together. Â Effectively, itâs what heâd meant. Hadnât worked though. Â But still. Â The Master hadnât killed him. Â That had to mean something. Â Pathetic Doctor really. She wasnât even totally sure which voice that was. Bit of a con of avoiding your past really, hard to keep it in line. Â Gets even more jumbled than usual. Â
She thought of River then. Â But River Song was different. Â River, armed with her blue book always knew where they were in relation to each other. River was always two steps and five spoilers ahead. Â And she was gone. Â And so were her parents. Â Rory Pond and Amelia. Â Amelia Pond. This face would never get to see her face. Â She clutched the console as more and more people came to mind. Â Sarah Jane probably wouldnât recognize her even if she saw her now. Donna couldnât. Â Clara would never even get the chance. Â And Martha Jones. Â Jo. Rose Tyler. Â For a moment, The Doctor wondered if Rose would choose to stay with the human version of who she was, or if sheâd travel with her again. Â Sheâd promised forever. Â But then again, so had he. Â But thatâs the thing. None of her companions lasted. Â
On a good day, they retired, middle-aged and happy. Â She couldnât think about the bad days right now. There were far too many of them. Didnât spoil the good ones, no. But it did make it harder to think. Maybe thatâs what she liked about The Master. Â He lived as long as she did, shared life experiences and all that. Â She knew that was barely a fraction of the truth. Â Sheâs liked him ever since they were children. Â He was my man-crush. Â Thatâs what he had told Bill. Â Bill. Â Canât think about that right now. Â Iâve got to move on. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
And thatâs another thing that made all of this so much harder. Â Last time she had seen the Master, he was Missy. Â Her hearts ached at the thought. Â Missy had been the closest to the boy she remembered running with on Gallifrey. Â It was so frustrating, because it had felt like they were so close. Â So close to being friends again. Â But then again, she never has been blameless in their dynamic. She was the one who convinced Missy âwithout hope, witness, or rewardâ and she had died that way. Â And where had she been? Â Also dying. Â Thinking about the stars. Â She should have found Missy after, given her a proper rest, again. Â Because she had been lost. Â Again. Â
Then there was another friend lost, all too complicated and too recent.  O.  She had liked him.  Genuinely liked him.  They texted, far more consistently than she usually managed.  O had been nice, funny, sweet.  Really smart too.  And witty. He could keep up with her, which was rare.  And he sent her memes.  It was so hard, trying to reconcile the manic, violent, hate-filled Master with Oâs peaceable façade.
Before she was fully aware of her actions, The Doctor found herself sitting on the steps in front of the console, opening her phone and scrolling through messages upon messages. Â And every one of them was a lie. Â The name at the top of her phone was a lie. Â She should change it, but what was the point? Â It really wasnât fair. Â The Master couldnât be O. Â It was unfathomable. Â He couldnât just be O. Â He couldnât just ask her how her day was and listen to her voice memos about daleks and cybermen and the fam running off and almost getting eaten by a relative of Scylla. He couldnât just share anecdotes about his day and cooking and fixing his hut in the outback. Â He couldnât just call her when he had a nightmare. Â
The first time that had happened, the Doctor was wholly unprepared. Â She was fixing the TARDIS, just routine maintenance when her phone had rang. Â So, she put the wire she was holding between her teeth while she answered her phone.
âHell-o?â Â She said, muffled. Â There was nothing on the other end of the line, not even breathing. The hairs on the back of the Doctorâs neck stood on end at the unnatural stillness. Â
âO, is that you? Â Are you alright, is this a distress call?â Â She was well on her way to becoming truly panicked when she heard something. It would have sounded like a balloon deflating if it wasnât such an obviously sentient sound. Ragged breathing followed after, chocked off.
âO?â Â She chanced saying his name again. Another sharp intake of breath, some noise that sounded so lost and pained and then. Â Â
âHey Doctor.â Â Shaky, but there.
âHey, are you alright?â Â
âN-yeah, of course. Â Actually, just being a bit stupid at the moment, instance of, of nostalgia I suppose. Really shouldnât have called. Â I am okay Doctor, let me just-â
âDonât hang up!â She hadnât meant to sound that forceful. Â Both her and O had been struck silent at the force in her words. Â O spoke first. Â Â Â Â
âI really am okay Doctor, I justâŠâ
âHad a nightmare?â She guessed. Â There was a long sigh. Â
âYeah.â
âGet those often?â
âWhat is that, a bad pick up line?â Â Oâs halfhearted laughter did nothing to distract the Doctor. Â
âItâs a genuine question.â Â She could practically feel O deciding between telling her the truth and hanging up. Â
âIâve had them since I was a kid. Â Seem to be coming back more and more though.â Â He stopped again and the Doctor knew he was still seeing whatever had wrested him from sleep. Â
âDo you want to talk about it, or do you want a distraction?â
âDistraction, definitely.â Â
âWhere are you right now? Â Describe it.â
âReally doctor?â He sounded rather cross.
âPlease?â
âAlright, Iâm in my, well, Iâm outside my, my hut. Â On my deck? Porch? Â I dunno. Â My head is resting on a pillar. Â Well, my headâs resting on my hand on the pillar. Â My other handâs holding the phone obviously.â
âWhatâs it like outside, what can you see?â
âI dunno! Â Itâs dark. Nightfall. Â Um. Â Outback-y? Few trees, lots of dirt. Â Itâs so flat, whyâs it so flat? Â Um, there are a few stars.â Â He cuts himself off. Â
âO?â
âWhere are you?â Â He sounds desperate, words rushed. Â
âIâm in the TARDIS.â Â
âNo, but where? Â Look outside.â Â He demands.
âAlright, just a sec.â Â The Doctor keeps the phone to her ear as she opens the door to the TARDIS, sits down on the edge.
âIâm in space. Â Not near any planets, well I canât see any. Â Iâm sitting down. Â My feet are dangling off the edge of the TARDIS.â Â She swings her feet to illustrate the point.
âAre you swinging your feet?â He asks.
âMaybe.â She replies. Â She hears almost the breath of a laugh and canât help but smile. Â
âSo, no planets, what is around you?â Â O says hesitantly.
âStars. Â Millions of them. Â Thereâs one not too far from me. Â Itâs beautiful. Â Burning blue and red and orange and colors I donât have a name for. Â Thereâs flares coming off it. Â And I can almost feel itâs heat, like the sun maybe, but less intense? You know I forget sometimes, how breathtaking a star can be? Â Thanks for this.â Â There no response on the other end of the line.
âO?â She asks, panic seeping in again.
âIâd like to see that star. Â Could we go sometime? Â See a few stars together?â Â Heâs speaking so quietly, the Doctor can scarcely hear him, has to strain her ears. Â Itâs a wonder his words arenât lost to the millions of miles between them. Â Something about the request, the tone? The longing? Â Takes her breath away.
âIâd like that. Â Maybe next time I visit? Â Go see a couple before I have to bring you back?â She says softly.
âWho says I have to come back?â Â There, thatâs much sharper than anything sheâs used to hearing from O.
âWhat do you mean?â
âNothing I.â He groans in frustration. Â âMy nightmare just reminded me of a few things. Â I donât want to talk about it.â Â Before she can say anything else, he speaks again. Â âNext time your in town, eh? Â Might just need to invite a rogue alien incursion then.â
âDonât you dare.â Â The Doctor is laughing, and so is O. Â And, itâs nice. Â And itâs quiet again. Â They sit in silence and if the Doctor closes her eyes, she can almost picture Oâs hut, picture him in front of it. Â
âThe sun is rising.â Â He tells her after a while. Â Quietly still, like heâs trying not to break this glass atmosphere between them. Â
âWhatâs it look like?â Â
âBig. Â Orange. Itâs turning the far-off grass red. Minus the smoke, it looks like the world is on fire. Â But nothing is burnt.â
âSounds like home.â Â She hadnât meant to say that. Â She tenses, waiting for the inevitable and completely warranted questions about home. But O surprises her. Â
âYeah.â Â Is all he says. Â She waits for more and when itâs obvious itâs not coming, she relaxes. Â O usually is really good at knowing when not to press her.
âThank you for being here Doctor.â Â He tells her. She could almost swear the star is front of her is really the Earthâs sun on her closed eyelids. Â
âNo problem, it was nice.â
âItâs not over yet.â
âIt will be though.â
âBut itâs not now, thatâs the point.â
âI know.â Â
âI should go to work.â
âGo to work then.â
âI donât want to.â Â
âAre you pouting O?â Â She asks, amusement coating her words.
âNo.â He says petulantly. Â She can almost picture the crease between his eyebrows. Â
âIâll text you later, okay O? Â Go to work, I donât want to make you late.â
âAlright. Â Try not to get killed Doctor.â
âO-kay.â Â She tells him. Â She can hear the grin at the exaggerated pun, and then thereâs a moment of silence, and then the line disconnects. Â She stays there for a long time after. Â Itâs peaceful. Â She canât remember the last time she felt so peaceful being still. Â
Then, the clatter begins as the fam wakes up. Â And the Doctor stands, takes one more look at the star, and closes the TARDIS doors. Â She walks to the console and saves her coordinates. Â
Just in case. Â
Here is the story Iâd said Iâd write. Title is misleading, basically angsty doctor/master. Let me know if you want me to read more. There *may* be a part 2 posted.
I wonder if the Spyfall story or even the rest of the season will involve the topic of Alternative/Parallel universes.
When the Doctor decodes the alien message it shows the locations of the unknown spy aliens on earth, but not just this earth other earths. Alternative, parallel earths.Â
The aliens want to take over the universe, but considering the alien map, could this mean they want to take over all the universeâs. All the different earths with different outcomes.Â
The topic of Alternative universes has been brought up before in Doctor Who such as when The Tenth Doctor, Mickey and Rose materialised in a parallel world where Pete Tyler never died or how the Timelords said that Gallifrey would be stuck in another universe (Day of the Doctor).
Considering we have what appears to be a new Master, does he come from this universe or from another entirely different one. The Master has a somewhat complicated timeline of regenerations and I wonder where this new Spymaster fits in.Â
The last time we saw Missy she had âdiedâ from her previous incarnation zapping her with his Laser Screwdriver and he was mortally wounded by her hidden blade, so itâs possible that Spymaster is an incarnation that appeared before Missy as we never saw a regeneration for the simm master.
But from the new Spyfall part 2 trailer it seems as if this new Spymaster has the never-ending DRUMS still (in the trailer the 4 beats can be heard one after another especially when he is bashing a button to it).
This completely confuses the Master timeline as the last time the drums were mentioned was in The End of Time Part 2 when it was revealed that Rassilon had embedded the drums in the Masterâs head as a child in order to bring the end of days into motion. The Masters drums were connected to the White Point Star and once the Doctor destroyed it, it looked liked the drums were finally gone.
In the episode The Doctor Falls the Master seems to be drum free considering that he never mentions them again nor does he absent mindlessly tap out his rhythm of four. When he was taken back to Gallifrey it seems that they fixed him up and got rid of his âsicknessâ. Missy also doesnât show signs of the drums so placing this new master is going to be damn difficult.
I wonder if this spymaster is from another universe where his drums were never removed. An alternative pathway, a different outcome.
I also have weird inkling that the unknown aliens could be the timelords from another universe, a universe where their genocidal mission of their species happened and they had become what they wanted to be, or rather what Rassilion wanted to become.
Rassilon: We will initiate the Final Sanction. The End of Time will come, at my hand. The rupture will continue until it rips the time vortex apart! The Master: Thatâs suicide! Rassilon: We will ascend, to become creatures of conciousness alone - free of these bodies, free of time, and cause and effect - while creation itself ceases to be.
Maybe in doing this the plan worked in their universe and so they are wanting to take over the other universes that exist. Maybe in travelling through different universes they met another version of the Master, who they could use to their advantage. Maybe they canât be detected by the doctor because their species is not recognised in this universe. The Doctor can sense them, like how timelords can detect their own kind though smell but she doesnât know what they are.
Graham: Itâs coming through the wall! How can it do that?
Thirteen: âWell physical boundaries donât stop it. Itâs still not used to this planet, or maybe even this reality.â
_ _ _
Thirteen: Where are you from?Â
Creature: Far beyond.
Thirteen: So you can communicate, then. Beyond where?
Creature: Your understanding!
Thirteen: Is this your native form, wherever it is youâre from? Is this what you look like at home?
Creature: We take this form to mock you. Your shape amuses us.
Thirteen: Very funny
Creature: We are stable now. We are ready.
Thirteen: What does that mean, stable? Ready for what?
Creature: To take this.
Thirteen: To take this what? Hut? Country? Planet?
Creature: Universe.
Who knows maybe the character Daniel Barton is another version of the Master whoâs part human part Timelord? Or the creatures are The Eternals? Or maybe Iâm just trying to scrape the barrel for more ideas.
Come watch some TOS with trek-tracks!
On Sunday, April 5th, starting at 3pm EDT, weâll watch two or three TOS episodes and make merry on CyTube. All you need is the link at the bottom of this post, and you can create a guest username to comment; no login required.Â
I will be taking suggestions for episodes and other content starring TOS actors (want to watch a weird obscure movie starring DeForest Kelley? We just might!) on this post or by message. Anything we watch has to be available on YouTube or DailyMotion or a site like that.
A reminder that weâre going for loving snark rather than cruelty or hating, which is no fun. Be kind to one another, and punch up, not down (the latter wonât be tolerated). This is not a restricted event, and the intention is to keep talk PG-13, but please be aware that it is intended primarily for adults.Â
Let me know if youâre coming, or just drop in!
