Welcome to the 4th-annual Community Secret Santa.  Much like a traditional secret santa, this event builds upon the “anonymous gift exchange” concept, and turns it into a secret, pen-pal-like correspondence from dec.1-25 of the given year. It’s an excellent way to spread positivity, make new friends, and get into the spirit of the season as we approach the holidays. I’ve hosted this event for the past 4 years, and it is now my pleasure to invite you to join in on the festivities.  Read more about the event ▸

In order to join, you must register. Registration will be open from now until 11/25 at 10pm EST. This process consists of two steps. 

TO REGISTER: 

1) First, fill out the google form here

2) Using a desktop, enable ask/anon/submit, and take a screenshot of these settings. Submit that picture to me here. (instructions linked below)

Once I have received the results of your form, as well as your screenshot, you will receive a confirmation message from me that your registration is complete, and that you have been added to the participant pool. 

Between 11/25-11/30, you will receive another message from me with the person that you will be “Santa’ing” for, as well as further instructions. The event will formally begin on 12/1, and end on 12/25 with your identity reveal.

to cut it short: some stuff has been happening and because german laws are a pain, i lost a total payment of 200€ which is now missing at the end of this month (November). i’ll see some money again when December starts, but for now i only have a few bucks left to my name.

an important reminder to other folks in the community (or any community with a character that uses SL for whatever reason)!!!

How do we recognize ableist content like that? I've never been in situations like that, so something that look pretty harmless to me could be in fact quite shitty. I don't want to share stuff like that and be unaware of it, how do I learn?

well thank you for asking!!! but the first thing I’d like to do is make it clear that while I do trust myself to recognize many common ableist errors/choices, I do not pretend to be an authority on this issue any more than anyone else who’s done some research, talked with other people, and worked to recognize things. I need help sometimes too! Also I’d like to reiterate that I am able-bodied and people with disabilities are free to correct me.

The second thing to notice is that SOMETIMES these things are context-dependent. For instance, while I usually gag to see Jameson made into like the son of somebody the same age as him, if you’re actually writing an au where Jameson and maybe another character or two are actually children to another character, that can be pretty cute!!! In that case an adult is not being infantilized and he is not made into a child because of his disability - he’s being made into a child because he’s a literal four-year-old and that’s the premise of the story (and he still can’t talk). Alternatively, maybe Jameson needs extra attention and love and protection from older brothers after a traumatic event - but at some point, that Jameson should begin to regain his independence, should still experience a wide range of emotions, and should not be condescended to about his emotions or ability to function alone. However, please be careful with this… don’t use context to make excuses if you’re actually pulling ableist shit.

I think that list I gave in the post I made is a good (but not comprehensive!) starting point for some of the things to look for that are offensive to people with disabilities (some of these are specific to mutism). Let’s take another deeper look at these points:

So this is a backstory piece on my Siren Marvin

Not my best piece of writing but here we go.

The ocean was peaceful, only broken by soft giggles and splashing. In the shallows two boys splashed and played. One had ebony and blue scales decorating their body giggling as they splashed the other with their tail. Their playing was only interrupted as someone called the other boy.

“I gotta go….”

The human boy turned to the other boy giving him a sad smile.

“Oh...w-will you come back?”

The siren looked away, tears glistening in his crystal blue eyes. He couldn’t face him.

“Of course! We’re friends aren’t we Marvin?”

The boy giggles splashing Marvin causing him to break into a fit of giggles as well. The two started playing again, until a yell from shore came again. They both stopped, continuing to giggle softly.

“Bye Jaden...see you tomorrow?”

The siren looked hopeful but tried his hardest to hide it.

“Yeah!”

Jaden paused before placing a quick kiss to Marvin’s cheek and rushing off to meet his mother. Meanwhile, the siren simply was frozen in place before a soft pink started to color his cheeks.

Marvin shook his head of the memory as he waited by the shore for his friend. Jaden should be here…. He stayed hidden from anyone that would be passing by but soaked in the sun’s warmth. The siren seemed to never gain any color except for more blue or ebony scales. His eyes started to drift closed as his ebony tail lazily splashed with the waves. The siren must have fallen asleep because the next thing he knew there was someone shaking him gently. Sapphire met turquoise as the world came back to Marvin.

“Have a nice nap Marv?”

Jaden chuckles placing a kiss to the siren’s forehead receiving a purr in return.

“You know it’s dangerous to be around me right? I could pull you to the depths of the ocean and devour your soul.”

Marvin’s arms snake around his waist starting to pull him deeper humming softly.

“Marv….”

Jaden rolls his eyes but doesn’t fight the siren, instead leaning back against him. The siren giggles nuzzling against his neck.

“I’m kidding, I only do that to evil pirates and sailors, you’re my friend.”

Marvin purrs as he keeps the two afloat in the water. That’s how the two spent their day until the sun began to set and Jaden had to leave. The siren clung to him until they reached the shore.

“Why can’t you stay?”

The siren pouts laying his head on the sand tail splashing in the waves. Jaden says next to him petting the siren’s hair with a sad smile.

“I’m not apart of the sea Marv, I’m bound to the land just like you’re bound to the sea.”

He places a gentle kiss to Marvin’s head with a sigh holding him close for the moment.

“I...I could come with you….”

Marvin mumbled softly but Jaden hushed him. Moving so the two could meet eye to eye.

“I won’t take you from your home no matter what. Marv….we can't ...”

The human’s words trail off as he sees someone walking towards them.

“Marv….go! You need to go!”

He quickly urged the siren back into the water with seeing the men coming their way. The siren lingered wanting to hold Jaden, something was wrong.

“Hide Marv!”

Jaden urged giving Marvin no room to argue. The siren sunk just low enough to blend into the dark water. He couldn’t hear but he saw the men approach Jaden. They exchanged angry words before a fight started to break out. Marvin watched silently until he saw Jaden go rigid and look at each other in shock. The man seemed just as surprised before pulling back letting Jaden drop grabbing at a growing red stain at his side.

The siren screamed before everything turned red. When the world cleared red darkened the water around him. The men were gone but, Jaden laid half way in the water barely breathing.

“Jaden!”

The siren was by his side pulling himself into the sand to hold the other close.

“D-Don’t leave me ...please…”

Marvin’s voice broke as tears streamed down his face. Jaden reaches up weakly to brush a hand along his cheek.

“D-Don’t cry Marv..please.”

Jaden coughs struggling to breathe, he pulls Marvin close resting their foreheads together.

“Can...you sing for me,”

“Jay…”

“Marv please…..”

Jaden pleaded with him before Marvin started to him softly. He sang softly careful for only Jaden to hear as they laid there with the waves crashing against them. Marvin continued to sing until Jaden’s eyes fluttered closed and he took his last breath. The siren decorated around Jaden’s body with shells, stones, and anything beautiful nearby. The combination created an almost halo around him.
