Since your mom died and the Avengers defeated Thanos, you couldn’t stand being in New York so you left and came here. It was where she told you could always go to feel safe, even if she wasn’t around. You hadn’t felt the same since she died so you hoped being here would do something but at times, it made you feel even emptier.

Okay but the Darkling using the Fold to protect his country isn’t even out of the realm possibilities and actually a pretty reasonable way to keep his borders in control. Like we haven’t seen the Chinese do EXACTLY that with the Chinese Wall and the ancient Romans do with Hadrian’s Wall. Keeping the Fold surrounded in Ravka while at the same time controlling it with his Grisha, keeps both his people safe and ends that endless war they’re fighting. He’d reunite west and east Ravka if he and Alina work together actually, prompting trade to flow back into the rest of Ravka, both feeding his people and refilling the crown’s treasury.

And I’m sure the Darkling usurping the crown is framed as a bad thing, but if you look at the big picture... He is immortal, he would hold that seat for as long as he lives and bring stability to his country. No such thing as change in government when he dies and his heir follows because it will always be him. There isn’t a power vacuum after some unpopular king dies bc it will always be him. No risk of incompetent monarchs fucking shit up both for Grisha or plunging the country in unnecessary wars bc it will always be him. We’re talking about a perpetual regime that actually can have progressive growth because it will always be him. He’s had 500 years of serving countless kings on his repertoire, you cannot tell me he doesn’t know how to effectively rule a country. To secure his throne he could actually have Sankta Alina as his queen, Nikolai saw the truth in that by proposing to her, but Alina would have the better hold and be in a better position of power to not only rein in Aleksander’s more ruthless approaches, while at the same time actually helping the geopolitical situation the country is currently in. Who else better to be a queen than someone who thought she’d been non-Grisha all her life until it turns out that she was one? Who else better to gap the divide between the Grisha and otkazat’sya than a queen who knows and sees the perspective of both sides?

Idk. to me Shadow King and Sun Queen sounded like a better outcome for the Grisha and for Ravka in the long run than whatever the heck happened in canon.

You woke back in the bedroom, unaware of how you’d gotten up the stairs after your fight with William. You’d only remembered falling asleep from sadness and exhaustion in a heap before the large fireplace, yet here you were, tucked in, warm sunlight pouring through the cracks in the curtains. All you could do was lay there fixated on the light flowing into the room, over your bed. Your bed. This was yours now, wasn’t it?

You’d tried to run like a fool, thinking over and over about William’s words, how dangerous it was to go it alone since he’d made it quite clear he wouldn’t follow or watch for your safety should you choose to leave. Was it even worth it? You’d thought maybe if you got home you could collect what little was left of your belongings and make a mad dash to another village. Start over, find a new home. But maybe this place where you now lay, maybe this was meant to be your new home.

The following day, as you arrived at Mount Olympus with Aleksander by your side, the pomegranate seeds sat heavily in your stomach. You were sure that if you moved too quickly, you would regurgitate them. The decision that you made with your lover was a testament to your loyalty to one another and it felt like it was at the expense of Demeter’s sanity. You were now forever connected to the god who had shown you the world.

From across the room, he and you could see your mother and Nikolai. It was like years had passed and this was the first time after a decade that you had seen her. She looked just as you had left her. You did not expect yourself to be so excited to see her, but when you saw her smile and glassy eyes, you were already prepared to make amends and move forward.

Demeter saw how Aleksander held your hand and how he slowly let it go when she started stepping toward you. You approached each other slowly, as if a small whisper would have brought both of you to dust. She looked over you to be certain that you were not being returned with a single hair split of your crown, then without any warning, she nearly crushed you with a hug. 

“Y/N,” she whispered as she patted your head while she embraced you. She said your name like the prayers she had been making for the past weeks. Her voice shook like a low earthquake and her eyes had a layer of water that was ready to topple over her water line. 

“Mother,” you said as tears were bubbling in your throat. “I missed you.”

“I missed you more than I can explain,” she cried.
