canon mlm rep be like "i like a boy..but im!?!? also a boy!? >-<??" meanwhile queerbaiting "when we're all done here, i'll buy a nice, big, family size bottle of top-shelf lube and i'll tickle your balls till you beg me to stop and even then i won't. i just won't do it".

Paul Atreides: The Sun Eating fire is your ambition: to swallow the flame down take it into your mouth and shoot it forth, a shout or an incandescent tongue, a word exploding from you in gold, crimson, unrolling in a brilliant scroll. To be lit up from within vein by vein. To be the sun. โ Margaret Atwood, Selected Poems 1: 1965-1975

Zack Fair is one of the video game guys ever made. He's a sweetheart. He believes government propaganda. He commits multiple war crimes and says "Oh yeah!" afterwards. He joins newsletter fanclubs for people he knows in real life. His coworkers call him puppy dog to his face. He's the beating heart trapped under the floorboards of the narrative. One time he pretended to let a nine year old beat him up. He's a country hick and proud of it. He loved one unimportant loner man so hard that the entire story of final fantasy vii exists. He's a government experiment. He's in a book club.
How do they keep making later and later stages of late-capitalism
Interpreting Marius from an historical angle with consideration of the values of ancient Rome and Renaissance Italy is valid.
Interpreting Marius from the angle of the authorโs intentions and statements about him is valid.
Interpreting Marius from the angle of gothic romance/gothic horror is valid.
Interpreting Marius from the angle of 21st century values and modern social politics is valid (and can be very interesting!).
Preferring one or several of these interpretations to others is valid.
Behaving like having/preferring a certain interpretation of a literary character is morally superior or morally reprehensible is, actually, a bit of a dick move.
And also, sorry to say this, butโฆ the interpretation of a person who has read all available canon material about a character, will always be more valid than that of people who have not. If you want to discuss the books, you have to actually read them. And yes, of course this takes time, but itโs not hard to contextualize interpretations and statements with a sentence like โI have only read books x and y at this point" or even to say "I don't feel like I know enough to give a balanced interpretation on this yet."
