A lot of my interest in doing music stuff for The Adventure Zone came from the idea of having a character whose only dialogue took place through Vocaloid software. It just seemed like a really neat idea, and the type of thing that could only work in a narrative podcast. So, I figured out how to use VOCALOID3 Editor and started tinkering around with Garageband, largely just so I could have backing music for this synthetically-voiced character.
The Vocaloid in question is AVANNA, which is the voice of a few tracks on Porter Robinson’s “Worlds,” an album I listened the hell out of earlier this year. I’m still figuring out how to make her plosives a bit more audible — if you had a hard time understanding the words in this verse, here’s the transcript:
Pulled from my home inside a cloud Lost to the dark I drift alone Now I’ve returned from beyond the shroud Ever to reign upon my throne Here in my Crystal Kingdom

Floating in still waters in the harbors of Maine, the lobster cars stand sentinel in the quiet moments between twilight and the coming darkness. Their shapes and lines recalled the ice fishing houses of Chris Becker’s childhood in Minnesota.
