Something that’s so important to me not only in sotr but all of thg is just the importance of art. How songs and poetry carry decades of fighting for freedom despite time’s erasure.
The artists behind them may have faded a hundred years ago, what they left behind still remains and inspire people they will never meet.
Art not only creates a bond through time but it conveys the voices of thousands of silenced that carried them to the present. It’s the only way of expression left for the oppressed, the only way to leave a mark.
The pin of Maysilee. The clothes of Cinna. The paintings of Peeta. The music of the Covey.
And it’s why the capitol wants to repress it so much. Because creating is power. And if the songs Lucy Gray wrote may go unnoticed for many, they will not be forgotten and they will come back stronger. Art is memory. Art is rebellion. Art is political. Art is freedom
Im rereading The Hunger Games because I apparently want to retraumatize myself after SOTR, and I got to Katniss and Gale selling strawberries to Madge.
I've seen people talk about the strawberries and how they relate to Maysilee because of the ice cream. But, the scene mentions Madge is wearing a white dress, the Mockingjay pin, and a pink ribbon in her hair.
Her mom, Merilee, wore a pink dress with matching ribbons on the day of her sister's reaping 💔 Maysilee's purple ribbons never made it home and Merilee lost her hummingbird pin, so Madge wears the things her mom and aunt had that no longer have their twin 😭
"will we still be twins?"
that line is devastating, even though maysilee hated the whole twin thing; wearing the same clothes, the same hairstyle…
suzanne, I'm in your walls 🥰
One thing I love about sotr is how much Haymitch and Maysilee matched each others capitol hating freak. Them deciding to paint their own posters, deciding to be loose canons and as wild as their horses, deciding to be rebellious victors, and not allowing themselves to be treated like animals
Maysilee said "jump", and Haymitch said "how high?"
rip maysilee donner you would have loved johanna mason
the way suzanne saw people romantically shipping haymitch and maysilee for years and said i’ll give you something even better. that’s actually his mean girl sister that he loathed for years and then grew to love like family! easily one of the best dynamics in the series
“A sister is someone you fight with and fight for.”
Hello hi twelve years old me would be so happy to know I’m twenty five and back into The Hunger Games. SOTR devoured me whole, I blacked out after finishing it and just woke up from it bon appetit.
haymitch sees the female tribute for the 74th hunger games and it’s a girl with the rage of maysilee, fire of louella, empathy of wyatt, blood of burdock, and the same horrible odds as himself. how could sweetheart not slip out?
maysilee and haymitch’s reaping outfits
i love her your honour
Maysilee Donner, my star, you will always be famous
Suzanne Collins number one Maysilee Donner defender
suzanne said you are NOT getting another love triangle you missed the point the first time and now you must LISTEN TO ME
iconic things suzanne collins did in sunrise on the reaping:
had haymitch declare himself an lgbt+ ally
confirmed snow is still habitually crashing out over lucy gray 40 years later
made me cry over the regina george of district 12
Thinking about Maysilee Donner. A girl who refused to let the Capitol dehumanize her. A girl who wanted to die with dignity, without begging for her life, because that mattered to her. Who set up a place setting with napkins and forks in the middle of the arena because she is a human being. Who loved jewelry and fashion and believed that her appearance sends a message about who she is, and who wanted that message to be respectable, dignified, worth something.
Thinking about Maysilee Donner who was unafraid to slap the woman who pulled her name in the reaping and who threw clever insults towards anyone who provoked her, no matter who they were. Maysilee Donner who believed human dignity is inherent but respect is earned and who refused to give respect to those who did not deserve it.
Maysilee Donner whose father threw money at the reaping stage as if that could save her, and the money floated to the ground just like the confetti, meaningless paper that signified nothing when placed against the power of the Capitol. Whose privilege could not save her. Who recognized that reality and faced it with more fortitude than any person should ever have to display. Maysilee Donner.
I'm currently reading "sunrise on the reaping" (only like 4 chapters left) and oh my god how I am loving the characters
they all are just so wholesome and too pure for this world😭😭😭😭 I'm really invested in this generation of tributes. It's also really interesting to watch more cooperative tributes, I kinda wish we could see more of others working together. or maybe I'm acting a little bit as capitol public watching the games lol
MAYSILEE DONNER THE WOMAN THAT YOU ARE! she's really become my favourite
lowkey should've won the games. and i have such a vivid picture of her in my head like in a movie! ugggh i wish i was good at drawing people. guess it's time to look for some fanart
also, I'm trying to picture haymitch book-accurate, but his movie appearance keeps popping up in my head, and only now, when I'm already finishing the book, I can finally kinda imagine him properly😭😭😭
some of my favorite cards from the death note tarot set i made. which you can get here, by the way
misa thing I did instead of talking to people at lunch lol
appreciation of death note's official art: gothic influence, biblical / religious imagery, intricate backgrounds, abstract but thoughtful compositions, influence of vkei, gothic lolita and other alternative fashions, dramatic - reminds me of classical baroque paintings, death imagery (obviously).
for a story centered around abstract mental battles, it was remarkable how the artist anchored it in a tangible, recognizable aesthetic, giving it a sense of materiality

ok i was looking through my reference pins and though of what's obvious
the reference in question:
off with their heads ♥︎
vintage playing card back designs
the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.
