PSA to my fellow artists!!!

With the holidays fast approaching it appears this specific commission scam is making its rounds again.

Below is a conversation I will be posting to help you all know what to look out for:

PSA To My Fellow Artists!!!

So this account reached out to me under one of my recent posts. My first safeguard against scams like this (and just so I know the preferences of my ACTUAL clients) is to check the account that is messaging me:

PSA To My Fellow Artists!!!

FIRST RED FLAG: No posts. No description. Default background, generic, probably stolen pfp. Robot City (But you all know this by now)

Now, I was like, 99% sure this was a scam right here. (shout out to that one twitter thread I read a few months ago. It helped me clock this account immediately)

But I decided to humor them on the off chance that this person just doesn't understand Tumblr culture. (please, please do not do this. I am petty and insane)

PSA To My Fellow Artists!!!

RED FLAG #2: Notice the lack of references: asking me to draw something and then not sending any reference materials (something I explicitly state on my commissions spreadsheet).

This is a topic they will try to avoid (as you will see below), and ultimately what made them realize that I wasn't worth the effort. Always, always, always require references and style guides for any commission you get. Scammers' main goal is to spend as little energy as possible. they will not bother giving these to you.

Now onto Red Flag #3:

PSA To My Fellow Artists!!!

Notice how they immediately aim for the most expensive option (which, for my commissions, happens to be fully rendered furry content). This is a red flag because not ONCE did they mention this was going to be anything other than a portrait. This is when I knew 100% it was a scam.

RED FLAG #4: Asking for personal information. I am begging you. I am begging, never EVER, EVER give out your personal information online. ALWAYS use a pseudonym. Change the subject. Do literally anything else. just DON'T. GIVE. THAT. INFORMATION. AWAY.

AND RED FLAG #5: Offering WAY more than I am asking for my services. Remember, kids: if something is too good to be true, it probably is!

it is here that you are going to want to block and report this account. Do Not Be Me. I am begging you. I am doing this for educational purposes. However. I have one more red flag for you guys:

PSA To My Fellow Artists!!!

RED FLAG #6: Now, this very generous (/s) person is offering me $300 WHOLE DOLLARS just to draw a furry for them! That's so incredibly thoughtful!

...so why do they not care about the species, color, accessories, pose...ANYTHING about it? (It's because they don't care. They're not gonna pay you the money.)

Look, I can understand how flattering it is to be given full creative freedom on a commission, but you have to understand that this will almost never, EVER, happen to you. I'm sorry. It's the truth.

Anyways. That's all I got for you. Do me a favor, go ahead and block/report @mlaurel any any other cronies they're affiliated with. Also reblog this post if you feel so inclined. Keep your information safe. Get that bank! And Happy (safe) Holidays!

Cerata's 2024 End of Year Artist shoutouts! (part 1)

Okay so this year was the first time I'd really participated in fandom in over a decade, but I'm truly glad I did because I met a ton of great people, and even got to work on projects with some of them. So I wanted to put all of the cool visual art that I've received last year, whether it be art trade, commission, part of an event, or...fanart? Because that happened somehow?

Anyway, there are a number of other people that I worked with last year, but a bunch of that art started near the end of the year, and as such is not finished yet, hence why this post will be two parts, one now, and the second when everyone else finishes up.

No particular order, all of these artists are great, and lovely people, so do go check out the rest of their work and tell them how cool they are, yeah? Also, some are currently open for commissions, so keep an eye out for that.

(Also, this is my first time trying to to ID text, so bear with me if they're a little rough, despite being a writer, I hate words?)

Seven young folks sit around a table playing D&D

From left to right: Otho-Ra, looking perplexed and wearing a red and blue baseball t-shirt, Lor-Zod, looking smug and wearing a black button-down that's open a bit at the top, Kon-El, looking intrigued and maybe overselling it a bit, dressed in a replica Scarlet Spider hoodie, Jon Kent, the Dungeon Master, describing the scene with genuine excitement, wearing an open red and black flannel with a white t-shirt underneath, Chris Kent, scowling at Lor-Zod sourly, wearing a white 'Metropolis' T-shirt like he did in his first appearance, Brian Bishop, a turquoise child resembling Brainiac, with glowing metallic cables acting as dreadlocs and a friendly helpful expression, leaning over to Osul-Ra and pointing to his character sheet with his left hand, while gently rubbing Chris' shoulder with his right to soothe him, and Osul-Ra, wearing a blue and red baseball t-shirt, and smiling at his character sheet as he listens to Brian explain it

So first we have @fiyaharts with a lovely illustration of a number of the my favorite Krypton and Krypton-adjacent children. Shadi is lovely to work with and fast to the point where it spooked me a little bit, go off girl.

Barbara Gordan as Oracle seated at her computer desk, looking over her shoulder at Kara Zor-El as Superwoman, who is playing with Barbara's hair. Floating green data screens overlay their faces as if the camera is coming through the monitor. They are both clearly divorced and in love.

Side profile with a purple background of OC Star Sapphire Conrad Bishop, a teenage Haitian-American boy with dark skin, and curly hair done up in a faux mohawk, highlighted with glowing purple light. He's wearing a reserved smile and a black shirt with a glowing star clearly visible on his shoulder.

Next we have two pieces from my favorite Evil Woman Apologist, @vivictory-draws, one of a divorced Barbara and Kara being totally normal about it, and the other of my child and blorbo that haunts my waking hours, Conrad. Love N to death, which is why I haunt her with threats of commissioning Joker/Desaad Yaoi.

...Maybe for the next list, who knows...

faux Wonder Girl comic cover, featuring Cassie Sandsmark in her black pants, blue jean-jacket outfit, in the center of the shot, looking towards the camera in alarm and reaching out. behind her to her left is Cissie King-Jones in her Arrowette costume, looking back over her shoulder at Cassie somewhat reproachfully, and behind her to her left is Rose Wilson as Ravager, shooting her a flirty smirk. Behind her is a creepy dude in shadow holding an open box with a wedding ring, and she's framed by two huge, ominous outstretched hands with red nail polish. The subtitle for the issue is "Suffering Sappho"

Cassie Sandsmark in a muted lavender dress in a booth seat across from a completely unremarkable man, who is clearly boring and irritating her

Cassie Sandsmark in a red crop top with blue jeans at a bar, looking away from Rose Wilson in irritation as Rose tries to flirt with her

So next we have the art created for the last @womenincomicsminibang (which is going to be returning with a reverse bang in a few months, keep an eye out on that.)

The lovely and evocative cover was done by the talented @breakingthespacetimewall, and the scenes of Cassie trying and failing to get her life together were done by the wonderful @soop-jpg

Working with them was a pleasure and honor, and their dedication and kindness really helped me through finishing that fic, and I remain incredibly grateful for that.

Faux Robin/Star Sapphire Comic cover, featuring OC Conrad Bishop as Star Sapphire, and Damian Wayne as Robin in his grey costume, bound to each other back to back by a hardlight rope. Conrad is desperately trying to look happy and contented with the situation, and Damian looks concerned and flustered.

Character Reference Sheet for Conrad Bishop, a lanky awkward teen, featuring him in a red Shazam t-shirt, blue jeans and hightops, and also him in his Star Sapphire costume, consisting of a black undershirt with a graffitied white broken heart on the chest, a violet-purple leather jacket, black jeans with large asymmetrical white stars, and chunky purple combat boots. To the right of them are a series of facial references for Conrad, and "The Cooler Conrad" for when he's in costume.

The first person I worked with this last year, and the one who really helped solidify the core of a lot of my projects, @nicodrawings drew a glorious cover for my mania-induced first longfic, and also a character reference for the aformentioned disordered young man who haunts my waking hours. She's a professional through-and-through, with wonderful instincts and great communication. She's also working on a fan-comic project of her own that I think is wonderful and am excited to see continue.

Cover art for the story "Unknown Brother" featuring Kon-El and Jon Kent in the center, with Kon looking affectionately at Jon who is obliviously talking about something, while floating just slightly off of the ground and gesturing in front of Kon with a stick of cotton candy. Behind Con in portrait are a smiling Bart Allen in a yellow hoodie, a Cassie Sandsmark who seems completely done with things and in the middle of shaving her head, and Tim Drake also. Behind Jon is the ominous shadow of Manchester Black, and just peeking in is a subtle Damian Wayne.

I lucked out and was paired with the super chill, super talented @byeara on my first fan project ever, and they hooked me up with this super fun and detailed cover for the fic I wrote for that one kon-centric minibang. I loved working with them, and would love to do so again, logistics willing.

Conrad Bishop and Damian Wayne in greyscale, with Damian laying back on a bed caressing Conrad's face lovingly, with Conrad holding himself up over him and leaning in for what is likely about to be a kiss. Next to them is Damian's discarded phone and earbuds, with a blurry image of Corinne Bailey Rae's debut album, and her song "Like a Star" that Damian had just finished listening to.

This jerk @vnekey made me cry by drawing really sweet, totally unexpected fanart for that mania-fic I wrote. I'm still a little speechless really, I'd never gotten fanart of any sort for any reason before, and to receive something so lovely as the first thing really touched me deeply, and honestly kept me writing through some rough patches.

...Fight me!

Cute stylized art of Chris Kent, smiling brightly, in a blue and white Superboy hoodie, smiling with a blush at Brian Bishop, a turquoise Coluan android with three eyes, glowing metallic cables fashioned like dreadlocs, and a smile and blush matching Chris' to go with a more reserved smile

My first ever art trade! Kind of! @spider-jaysart is super sweet and supportive and made my...second biblically (is there a Source bible? Are there religious Coluans?) cursed son and his hapless, frankly narratively cursed best buddy look so precious that they ALSO made me cry, can we stop that actually--

Chris Kent in some kind of tomb, in a turquoise and white Superboy costume standing next to Brian Bishop, a turquoise artificial Coluan in a fairly gay Turquoise Lantern uniform, both looking at an ancient floating helmet with interest, the helmet itself glowing and incased in Brian's light construct. Behind them is a mural of two dragons, one red one blue, fighting a six armed green giant

Speaking of my cursed son and his narratively cursed Kryptonian, @spicy-apple-pie created this really pretty piece that's...a number of weird deep cuts smushed together into something really specific, but neat if you have the context, which nobody does :3

She was so wonderful and patient and I really enjoyed seeing her run with her inspiration, the Kryptonian mural is super neat and not something I would have ever come up with on my own.

Cute cartoonish lineup of seven Lanterns, each of a different color in order from left to right: Emily the blond human Red Lantern, Korg the Korugaran Yellow Lantern, Conrad the Human Star Sapphire, Brian the synthetic Turquoise Lantern, Tai the Human Green Lantern, Thyra the Thanagarian Blue Lantern, and Dyl the Coluan Indigo Tribesman

@mediaraiz Is really stylistically flexible, and their "Blob" style really scratched that itch I had for something cute and playful, and they were so game in taking on a larger project, and then went above and beyond in making my lanterns looks truly special.

OC Star Sapphire Conrad Bishop reclining on the moon next to Superboy Jon Kent, both are chatting and enjoying each other's company.

Finally (for now), @riverdeansart drew a sweet little scene of two horrifyingly stressed totally fine spacebros chilling and chatting about how everything is completely okay!

I was super vague about this one and Dean did a great job getting the vibes right anyway, and with haste.

...So yeah, that's if for now! I'll circle back in a bit when I'm forced to let more artists out of my basement everything else is done!

this is your periodic reminder that for all the artifacts and errors and "tells" one could possibly list, the only reliable way to actually determine if an image is ai generated is to investigate the source. it is becoming increasingly common for "fake classical paintings" to circulate around curative aesthetic blogs, and everyone should be using this as an opportunity to not only exercise their investigative skills but also appreciate art more in general. you're all checking out the artists you reblog, right? 🫣

so what are some signs to look for? let's use this very good example.

This Is Your Periodic Reminder That For All The Artifacts And Errors And "tells" One Could Possibly List,

what a lovely late-impressionist piece blended with evocative leyendecker-esque themes! why haven't you ever heard of this artist before? surely tumblr would be all over an artist like this. who is justin brown?

your two options from here are to do a search for the name, or a reverse image search. i prefer reverse image searching, particularly when it comes to a common name like "justin brown". so what does that net?

This Is Your Periodic Reminder That For All The Artifacts And Errors And "tells" One Could Possibly List,

Immediately, without looking at any text, something is wrong: it barely exists. an actual historical piece would turn up numerous results from websites individually discussing the piece, but no such discussions are taking place. Looking at the text, though, does show the source-- and at least in this case, the creator was honest about their medium.

This Is Your Periodic Reminder That For All The Artifacts And Errors And "tells" One Could Possibly List,

But let's also look at the "exact matches", in case a source doesn't make itself apparent in the initial sidebar results like this.

This Is Your Periodic Reminder That For All The Artifacts And Errors And "tells" One Could Possibly List,

This section will often tell you post dates of images, and here it can be seen that the very first iteration of the image was posted 15 days ago. It did not exist online prior to that.

Seeing how long an unsourced image has been floating around is a skill applicable to more than just generative images! See a cool image of an artifact or other intriguing item with a vivid caption? Reverse search it! If all the results are paired with that caption and only go back a few months, you might just have viral facebook spam.

Sometimes generative creators are dishonest about their medium and do not tag it like in the example, so that's when establishing "jpeg provenance" becomes important. While it can be a little trickier to determine if someone is using generative images and not admitting to it if they aren't trying to pass it off as a classic, something to consider is the age of their account and the frequency with which they post. Here are some account red flags:

-Did they only start posting art after 2022, or if they did before, did their style/skill level WILDLY change? Not gradual improvement-- I'm talking amateur graphite portraits straight into complex digital renders. Everyone starts somewhere, newness is not a red flag alone; it's newness combined with existing in a vacuum away from any community.

-Do they post fully-finished paintings several times a week? -Do many of these paintings seem iterative of a similar theme or subject matter ("three well-dressed young men face each other under shade and dappled sunlight")?

-Does their style change in inconsistent ways? An artist that can swap between painting like Drew Struzan and Hokusai should be pretty well known, right? Why is no one hyping this guy?!

-Do they have social media besides the source instagram? If so, what are they posting about? Are there any WIPs? Doodles? Interactions with other artists? Gallery dates? 3am self-doubt posts? Or is it all self-promo? Crypto? Seemingly nothing art-related at all for someone pushing out 3 weekly paintings?

Basically, if it's important to you to omit this stuff when you curate, please don't just smash reblog if the source doesn't seem to be the OP themselves. Seeking out sources was important even before this became an issue, now it is more than ever.

peace n love
