If acknowledge it's out of character, is it wrong for me to enjoy out of character content?
Merlin and Aurther may have been soul mates, but Lancelot truly loved Merlin and every single detail about him. I ship merthur but I will die on that hill
How many times do you think Merlin brought in breakfast for Arthur just to find an empty room and a cold bed? How many times did he stumble out of bed in the morning, going to the kitchens without a thought while the cook let him take food became she couldn't bare reminding him? How many times do you think Merlin went to go clean Arthur's room only to find it unchanged since he last entered? How many times do you think Gwen found him there after she switched rooms because she couldn't bare to be there, but when she passed by Merlin always was? How many times did Merlin light a fire or wait at the desk for Arthur, trying to forget that he wouldn't be in that room ever again?
My favorite thing about art is that everyone takes something different out of it! Oh you like this song? This is what it means to you? Well this what it means to me. You see these two characters together? I see these two. We both love this thing so much and took such different things from it! Isn't that cool!? Isn't awesome the we see the same things and we love them differently! Then we take what we see and what we love from it and make new art! And the cycle continues! I love art and I love humanity!

I need more angry Merlin! I need Merlin to accidentally reveal his magic, expecting Arthur to lash out and feel betrayed. I need Arthur to tell Merlin he knew the whole time. I need Merlin to pause, to process what he just said. I need Merlin to realize what he's sacrificed to keep his secret while Arthur let him. I need Merlin to be the one to lash out and tell him this. I need Merlin to be the one to feel betrayed. Arthur knew and he let Merlin continue to lie to him and believe that Arthur hated him. Arthur didn't tell him he knew all in the name of "trust" and "letting Merlin decide when it was best to tell him". I need Merlin to break down at this. How could Arthur not realize how much it hurt Merlin to lie!? How could he be okay with the betrayal while not processing the consequences of that betrayal!? For a good cause or not!? I need Merlin to scream.

And we are trending again, how are we all doing, Merlin Fandom?
Gwaine being Gwaine, who has travelled all of Albion and seen plenty of homosexual relationships in his time (if not experimented himself), takes it upon himself to voice a slew of the raunchiest, filthiest jokes known to man, because he doesn't understand why loving someone of the same gender is so shameful.
Arthur is conflicted, at first, because he worries about Leon's standing in court and his status amongst the nobility. But Leon was his very first friend, so he finally decides that his first Knight deserves to be happy and anyone who disagrees has a one-way ticket to getting Banished and stripped of all lands and titles. The rumours settle down real fast after he makes good on his threat to one of the Lords.
Gwen has known since the very beginning, of course, she was there when Leon tripped in the pond and accidentally kissed Elyan for the first time, so she takes every opportunity to tease her brother about his new beau.
Percival and Lancelot haven't known Leon or Elyan for long, but they're both supportive and gossipy anyway, like proud mama bears on the sidelines.
Leon is awkward. Like, really awkward. He turns into a stuttering candyfloss anytime people even acknowledge him for something other than work, so this all turns him into a incomprehensible tomato. It's adorable, honestly.
Elyan flirts. It's an automatic reflex to cover up his embarrassment, like going along with a joke when you're at the butt of it, but he secretly lives for the way Leon gets all shy and blushy when they meet eyes. Besides, he's got nothing to lose anyway, especially after he all but got Arthur's permission.
And Merlin, bless his little heart, gets a break from saving Camelot and watches the drama from the sidelines.
(He totally helps Elyan pick flowers for Leon and teaches him how to court a noble, he's got the experience after all of Arthur's dates with Elena and Mithian, even if they were a bit disastrous.)
Elyan and Leon would totally have that stableboy/son of a lord kind of relationship where Elyan would leave a flower he picked in the meadow at Leon's bedside because he knows he's a romantic and Leon would tie up all of Elyan's letters in a silk ribbon because he's done thst with their notes when he was younger and it's habit by now.
They keep at it when they both become knights, and then Gwaine finds out.
And...and...and then?? How dare you stop there! 😆
Elyan would be a sweetheart (just don't let Gwen know that because he'd never hear the end of it), and Leon is totally a romantic:

It's silent, somber, the middle of the night.
Arthur: I don't think I've ever felt loved before
Merlin, sitting beside him: what do you mean?
Arthur, watching the fire dance: I don't know. I've never felt... Wanted... I guess.
Merlin: is this about Uther
Arthur: unmet expectations, you mean.
There is silence.
Arthur: everyone else is getting paid to be there when I need them.
Merlin: that's not true
Arthur: you say that because you're different, because you're the first person who's been different.
Merlin: I say it because no one would work for a prat like you for the money alone. Least of all a sorcerer, right?
Arthur: *huffs* thanks
Merlin: there are five kingdoms in Albion. One promises nothing but war, another is so deep in debt that the pourest show it, another is so wary they don't even think of their people and the last one has turned into a desert as their King died an isolated death
Arthur: so, I'm the least awful option then
Merlin: you're the golden King
Arthur: because of a prophecy
Merlin: because of your hair
Arthur: O.o?!?!
Merlin: *sighs* no, it's because you care and you give and you love. And that love is returned by your people
Arthur: Love shouldn't be transactional
Merlin: love was the very first currency.
Arthur: ...
Merlin: you've earned every heart you were given.

Uther is… tired.
At first, he hadn’t thought anything of Merlin. He figured he’d be gone within a month just like all of Arthur’s other manservants, but he’d be grateful for the month’s pay and exposure to higher society, and that would be reward enough for his… heroics. And then he was impressed; the servant lasted much longer than expected, and then continued to last. And then, Uther began to regret hiring him entirely. Merlin was… antagonistic, and sweet, and mentally afflicted, and wise beyond his years. He had Arthur, Morgana, Gaius, the other servants, even a few of the guards and knights, all wrapped around his finger, and he didn’t even seem to realise it.

I felt the same way when I finally watched Merlin a couple of months ago. I‘d been going through the worst four years of my life at the time but somehow this show woke something up inside of me that I thought I had lost many years ago. For the first time in possibly a decade I felt alive again, felt like myself! I really hold it dear to my heart and I‘m so very glad that the fandom is still this active and thriving because whenever I‘m relapsing to my old bad habits and mindsets I can pick up some fanfic or look at the amazing fanarts and feel a little better almost instantly.
Merlin is the first show I've cried over in a while. I'll see deeply profound posts abt it and just tear up like a mfer and it's exhilarating. I hate how much it makes me feel (lie) and I haven't felt so alive in at least a year. Merthur saved my life probably. :)

but when i first found merlin, i was 17, 18 years old. i was in a really pivotal time in my life and i was... so confident. so ready to take on the world. and these characters, they helped me. they were ready to take on the world, too, and i was ready to fight alongside them.
we drifted away, as we do. and i had... a really traumatic early 20s. one that made me lose myself. i no longer wanted to fight, to believe, to hope. survival was hard enough.
finding merlin again?
i feel like i am waking her up again. the person i was when i was ready to fight for what i believed in. i now want to pursue my lifelong dreams for the first time in years. i am passionate again. i am waking up.
merlin is an essential part of my life, and I am so glad to have him, and arthur, and gwen, and the knights, and Morgana, and all of you along with me.
I just want to say it‘s so sweet how many of you gave me a warm welcome to the merlin fandom! Thank you so much guys, that‘s exactly the wholesome content i came here for (and I‘ll defo hit some of y‘all up for fic recs at some point lmao)
Discovering a fandom long after its original content released somehow feels like discovering an old religion believed to be dead, yet still thriving.
It's like an adventure.
Like when I started getting into Lord of the rings a year ago, or when I finished Merlin mere days ago I was bitter about not discovering them sooner, because I thought I'd missed the fandoms highs and everything left today would be crums of what it used to be, since their last content aired literally almost decades ago.
Yet when I look up fanfiction, fanarts or just the tags on tumblr I find their fandoms to be as alive the day the show finished.
It honestly feels like the closest I'll ever get to discovering a fantastical place like Atlantis or Kong Island or something like that and I think that's beautiful
Rewatching Merlin S1E2, when Merlin is dressing Arthur for his duel and just generally being incompetent because it's like his first day on the job, but imagine:
Merlin: *hands Arthur his helment* great, yeah, I think you’re all set
Arthur: Aren’t you forgetting something?
Merlin: *frowns*
Merlin: Oh, right
Merlin: *kisses Arthur*
Arthur: *turning red* No, you idiot! My sword!
Spoilers for Arcane S2 Act III
If I had a nickel every time 2 characters start on bad terms only for one of them to save the other in the very same episode which kicks of their friendship which is essential to their arcs and makes the one saved a better person and helps him achieve everything he has ever dreamed of and more while the other slowly loses himself, disregarding his own morals for the greater good while working in the shadows towards their shared goal but gets tunnel vision and forgets himself (which leads to the destruction of everything he worked for) and they are referred to as/called the two sides of the same coin and at the end they hold one another as they/one of them die (and btw one of the characters is in relationship with this badass woman he doesn't deserve but still choses to spend his last moments in the presence and only thinking about the sassy twink that has been there for him for years) and they don't kiss, it isn't outright stated that they love each other romantically but there is love, it is beyond friendshp, brotherhood or partnersip, they are soulmates...
