My thoughts on the subject...
The Omnic Crisis ended with the Extinction of Humanity. Or Pyrrhic Victory in the Crisis.
The main POD can be a simple one, killing off Gabrielle Adawe before she could speak to the UN and outline her plans for what should have been Overwatch. Without her, the UN just keeps throwing out more poor solution after the other, which only works once, or twice at best. Everyone is fighting their own war and the Human Race starts to break against Anubis.
At some point the UN itself just collapses on itself as nation after nation is overrun by the Omnics. It is now every man, woman and child for themselves. The US Navy sacrificed itself to save New York City from Anubis, shipping almost the whole population to Cape Canaveral. What was left of the Canadian Armed Forces died at Edmonton, Vivian Chase long rumored to be the very last soldier left before her true fate was found. Portugal and Spain fled to Gibraltar while London was wiped off the map. Doomfist sacrifice himself , carrying a old nuclear warhead on his back and stormed the Nigerian omnium, all that was recover was his namesake fist.
The few strongholds of Mankind was Russia, Sweden, a few others but it was all over. Many would pour what they had left into space travel, seeking the safety of the Moon Lunar Colonies and beyond to Mars. The 'Great Exodus' as many would call it would see as many said tearful goodbyes to those chosen and those left behind, such as Torbjörn Lindholm to his wife and newborn daughter. Some was chosen for their genius minds, like Doctor Siebren de Kuiper and Victoria Naughton, a child Angela Ziegler, Moira O'Deorain, the Heroic Five, among others. Those needed to give Human Kind one more chance.
However, there was still a chance to stop Anubis. Those who should have been Overwatch rallied behind a still living Mina Liao with her own All, or Nothing Plan: Aurora. To share Aurora's sentience with all the Omnics, to free them from Anubis' control. Even at the cost own her own life and having no idea what would happened afterward, the team and survived UN forces had no other choice flying to Nepal as Russia nuked itself out of pure spite and the few few human bastions like the Crusaders in the Alps fell.
In the Last Stand of Overwatch, even as Anubis poured all it forces to stop the humans, but at the cost of all their lives, it worked.
Omnics around the world was freed, free to chose, to think. To act of their own free-will. And many turned on Anubis for what it had done and what it done to them and to the humans. The same for many of the other God programs now freed,, allied with them. In it last stand in Cairo, Anubis and it last loyalists was defeated, even as itself avoided captured.
The Omnic Crisis was over, with the cost being the end of human life on Earth, and the Omnics themselves having free will. Those left had since fled to Mars, not nothing what happened back home.
Following the war, the God Programs and the Omnics would seek to rebuild the world, and to make up for the doomed Human Race, organizing themselves in several nation-like states, the most prominent being the Shambali Monks.
Now, the Omnics now push for the unthinkable: To undo their greatest sin, they plan to bring mankind back to life by way of cloning. To let a new generation of humans to walk the earth once more. The first being the DNA of a newborn killed near the end of the war: Lena Oxton. Humankind will live again, and maybe finally apologize.
However, it is long rumored that not all humans are dead. That at least one, or two still lives. Jack Morrison is without a race, without a nation, without those who he would have called friend. But Soldier 76 still fights...but for what?
Anubis still lives, plots and plans. Now with his new host body, the Canadian once named Sojourn, and it puppets like a cybernetic Olivia Colomar who fights from inside her mind, not seeks to finished what it started.
And on Mars, the Humans there rebuild the lost for a new one: To reclaim Earth.
OW AU: What if the Omnic Crisis ended with the Extinction of Humanity? PT. 1
Overwatch never came to be during the omnic crisis due to AU shenanigans (idk haven't come up with a reason yet). The crisis evolves into a full war one which humanity ultimately lost. Auroras ascension happens much later than in canon but by that time there's really only a few humans left (five to be exact, definitely not enough to form a population). So most omnic become sapient after most humans are gone and they revolt against Anubis which does actually gets destroyed but only sorta.
My personal head cannon is that you can't really kill a god program like anubis as it managed to disperse it's data across the global data-network (i.e what remained of the Internet ) so anubis is still technically around but not in the capacity where it can do actually harm.
So Anubis is gone, humanity is gone and your left with a lot of omics that are still trying to figure out the whole being "alive kinda" deal with the looming knowledge that they've participated in what is essentially genocide. So naturally some of them get guilty and decide undo / make amends for what happened. So the first generation of humans to walk the earth in the past 50 years are brought back (Jurassic park style) from the remains of the dead. In this AU there's only been about three generation of humans since the extinction so there's not a lot of humans quite yet and a lot more omnics since almost all (with the exception of the ones which produced militant types) the omniums are still active albeit under omnic control.
SOJOURN OVERWATCH I AM COMPLETELY HEAD OVER HEELS IN LOVE WITH YOU
every day i wake up and beg on my hands and knees for skill-based ranking in comp, AND EVERY DAY I WAKE UP DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i feel like using win/lose ratio to rank people in comp is really smart in theory, obviously if you do good, communicate with your team lalala, team-work makes the dream-work, whatever!!!! you're going to win games. but in some cases that really does nottttt work!!!!
one, people use the "i carried my team and we still lost!!" excuse SO often and using skill-based ranking instead could get rid of a lot of that!! not necessarily ALL of it, but i don't think we'd hear as much of it, since you wouldn't be de-ranking because of your team, you'd be de-ranking because of your own stats. TWOOO!! the player base, especially people who avoid comp simply because of the rank system (MEEE!!), have always complained about the win/lose system, and about 80% of the people you ask will agree that skill-based ranks would be a lot better than just win/lose. i believe skill-based would be ASTRONOMICALLY better than what we have now. not only to appease the people who actually play, but for future comp events!!! aka drives and/or stadium (just came out, so obviously i might be biased on this...) with drives, a lot of people play comp simply for the name tags, treating it like qp, lalalala... it causes a lot of people to de-rank, and it's a nightmare for people who regularly play comp !! obviously, there's easier ways to mend that issue, but it's a vaguely rank related problem... so it's staying. obviously if they did switch to skill-based instead of win/lose, it would take a lot of trial and error with the new ranks and whatnot (and a lot of work for the small indie company.. which is my guess on why we don't already have skill ranks) and it would be wonky with some characters, and win/lose might genuinely need to be a contributing factor to some characters, but i don't think it should be that way for everyone. for exampleeee, a consistently 30+ elim sojourn who only dies a handful of times, but is de-ranking because of the tank maybe, or a dps pushing too far up over and over, or supports getting jumped in the backline!! why should they de-rank just because of the teams' stats and not their own?? different scenario, a soldier76 who's only just started playing comp. and is now in plat because of their tank and other dps/supports popping off enough for that soldier to sit back!! let's say 10ish elims per game, handful of deaths, but getting back-to-back wins because of their teammates ! again, why should they rank up because of the teams' stats? for certain characters, mercy for example, stats aren't always going to determine what rank you should be! often for mercy players it's movement and game sense that really make or break the character!! but that can't show through stats. for mercy (and probably supports alike, knowing some people don't like to dps-support like others do) it would be heavily dependent on beam ratio, number of deaths, resurrects, and if there was a way to rank for movement, i imagine that would be a contributing factor as well!!
i hope this made any sort of sense, and forgive me if any of the info is wrong / grammar mistakes.. i wrote this as my melatonin was kicking in. </3
