"Avatar has a white savior narrative" And what do you want people to do about it? Genuinely, what actions do you want people to take? Would a boycott help indigenous people? Do you think the director would listen to what the public has to say now, when he already hasn't listened for 13 years?
Avatar is Baby's First Environmentalism, and sometimes that's just what privileged people (especially white people) need to get into the swing of things. It's by no means a perfect movie and you won't see me defending its director, ever. But it's one of the first movies to show ecological destruction on an emotional level, rather than a visual level. It's like how Ghibli tears are drawn much bigger and heavier than tears are in real life, to show how crying feels, rather than how crying looks. Not many people will understand just how devastating the destruction of Aboriginal birthing trees or O'odham sacred cacti is — but when the emotional pain is visualized as a tree the size of a skyscraper and home to hundreds of people, it resonates.
Avatar is flawed, and its creator even more so but at least it does something to people. It pushes privileged people to look around for ways to help, and to actually do something. The Na'vi language groups have had annual trash pick-ups since the first movie was released. The Avatar Podcast spends half its air time raising awareness for real life indigenous peoples in need of help. The fandom itself is mostly populated by autistic and other neurodivergent people who finally found a safe outlet to socialize and to help. How many other big budget Hollywood movies do that? Is Avatar really more flawed and harmful than other blockbusters, or are you just more aware of Avatar's flaws because it actually tries to do something?
I just saw Avatar: the Way of Water and when I tell you it had me SOBBING omfg like tears were streaming down my fucking face in the theater. SUPER recommend it, 10 out of mf 10 y’all. It was a pretty badass movie altogether and I’m going to sleep when I get home so I don’t cry some more 😭

#SYNOPSIS— continuation of Quaritch obsessing over his ex lover
#WARNING(S)— implications of forced relationship, dark quaritch, yandere
#CHARACTER(S)— Recom! Colonel Miles Quaritch
To accept him was difficult— strenuous even. He was stubborn and resilient. Fueled by his desire to call you his. He was difficult to ignore, to pass him off as a stranger. He wasn’t— everything he did was a reminiscence to the original Miles Quaritch. The way he would smile with a cocky grin on his face. The way his eyes would light up when he would see you, saunter towards you with confidence in his steps.
Ever small thing he did reminded you of your past lover. The very man you once loved and cherished. It was difficult to be around him— painful even. It felt like you were betraying your past lover. As if you were replacing him with his clone— but there wasn’t much of a choice. He was always around you not once leaving you out of his sight. Hovering over you, snapping at other passerby’s. So you’ve come to terms with him, he is not the man you once loved but he is someone that you can grow to love. But it still felt wrong— as if you were trying to forget your old lover and substitute him for his clone.
But you couldn’t help it. He was once the man you loved. Quaritch however interpreted this as you growing accustomed to him— finally accepting him for he is. He was ecstatic to see an improvement. His efforts towards you weren’t going to waste— you’re accepting his presence rather than scurrying off to who knows where. He took it as a good sign— and so did his advances towards you continued. He pursued you without hesitance, showed off his new abilities to impress you.
He was alike to a lost puppy trialing after you, wanting your attention on him— solemnly on him. He would snarl and hiss at the others, tail lashing behind him like a feral cat. It was cute— in a way. Admittingly odd and surprisingly very different from his predecessor. He would purr when affection was granted to him. Overjoyed like a child, tail slapping against the ground.
