Other people want Doctor Who to go back to it's roots by having the Doctor be a white man. I want Doctor Who to go back to it's roots by having the Doctor tell a Dalek to kill itself. We are not the same.

Audiobooks are great, but if you are not a native English speaker you will probably understand even less when you listen to it (at least that’s my experience). So if you have trouble understanding an old English book, get a student edition. At school you probably read classics in your language and at least in germany we have student editions where outdated obscure German words and grammar are explained at the bottom and those exist in English too. ( I think there is something like „Shakespeare no fear“ etc.) Or get a student version in your native language for students studying English, where the text itself is the original, but the annotations are in your language. I know a lot of people are ashamed of buying student versions because they think their English should be good enough, or they won’t have the „real experience“ or something like that… that’s bullshit. You are not a native English speaker, and you are most certainly not an (insert time period of work you’re trying to read) native English speaker so naturally you will have trouble understanding some words, or even the whole text. And if you just read through it without understanding a thing, it will be boring, exhausting and you will gain nothing at all. Let me tell you there are classical German (my native language!) authors I would not dare to touch without an annotated version, because they write in a crazily complicated style in outdated terms. So buy that damn student version and enjoy your classic!

Not to be a pretentious asshole but yes there is a problem with people no longer reading the classics. A lot of the YA literature romance novel crowd perpetuates the myth that the classics are inherently boring and stuffy and there’s nothing you can relate to or learn by reading them. And they’re not. These beautiful universal things we enjoy, comedy, romance, tragedy, family strife, they’re still so poignant centuries after they’re written.

Same in German. I mean for the original stories and adaptions set in Victorian England it would kind of make sense since even family members once addressed each other with the formal version of 'you', although I'm not sure if we hadn't moved past this already in the late 1800s. But for all modern adaptions, this translation makes absolutely no fucking sense. I mean come on, you can't tell me that BBC Sherlock and John who were on a FIRST NAME BASIS would have addressed each other with formal 'you' (Sie) instead of 'you' (Du) until John's wedding?! Elementary's translation is even worse in that way because Joan and Sherlock address each other with Sie (formal you) until the very last episode. I mean please, they tell each other that they love one another let them say "du" (normal/informal you)

Lowkey hate how in Russian Sherlock Holmes translations (and, by extension, in adaptations in Russian, and in, like, the whole cultural tradition in general) Holmes and Watson use formal "you" with each other. It's, like, a whole Thing, seen as a something emblematic of book canon. And it doesn't really make sense!!! Yes they use last names but that was just the normal etiquette at the time even with close friends, and it's not like you have nothing to extrapolate from in Russian, because people also mostly used last names here at the time, and they did very much combine it with the informal you with their friends! There's tons of examples??? It was absolutely the done thing! Whooooo decided to translate Holmes and Watson like that >:(((

Ok hear me out: James T. Kirk.

I know that he's like THE famous womanizer and all, BUT does he have sex with these women? I remember an old blog post somewhere (not Tumblr) that kept track of every situation where it was possible/plausible for Kirk to have sex in whole TOS and it was VERY little. He flirts with everyone, sometimes out of genuine interest, sometimes to reach his goals, but it's flirting and kissing and so on. It's romantic. And with the women he is genuinely interested in he often ends up actually sad and heartbroken when in the end something happens to them or he has to leave. So I'd say it is pretty obvious that he feels romanticly attracted towards, well basically everyone in his vicinity, but we have actually no proof that he does feel sexual attraction. Soooo Jim Kirk is asexual.

Today’s entry in ‘Sherlock Holmes being very sweet and empathetic, actually,’ we have this passage from The Engineer’s Thumb.

(For context, this man has just shown up at Watson’s clinic with his thumb missing, and after cleaning and bandaging the wound, Watson takes him to Holmes)

“He [Holmes] settled our new acquaintance upon the sofa, placed a pillow beneath his head, and laid a glass of brandy and water within his reach.

‘It is easy to see that your experience has been no common one, Mr. Hatherley,’ said he. ‘Pray lie down there and make yourself absolutely at home. Tell us what you can, but stop when you are tired, and keep up your strength with a little stimulant.’”

He’s so comforting and hospitable to this man, knowing that he’s just received a traumatic injury. Instead of the impatience that he usually has for clients being slow, he recognizes that, yeah, the dude might need a minute after, y’know, GETTING HIS THUMB CUT OFF.

And THAT is Sherlock Holmes. Sure, he can be rude, petty, and abrasive, but he has a deep kindness that shows when it counts.

Ah yes Dr. McCoy as you both know.

Aroallo James Wilson anyone?

I firmly believe that Wilson is aromantic, but he hasn't realized and that's why all his romantic relationships fail. He's got this I can fix them mentality that's why he gets with needy/broken people. He feels sorry for them, he feels empathy and compassion for them, which he mistakes for romantic attraction, and he is sexually attracted to them so he enters a romantic relationship. But when his compassion wears out and he gets burned out from all the emotional labour there's nothing left to sustain the bond (except I guess sexual attraction but I know nothing about that since I'm ace) so the relationship fails.

That's also why I love him and House as a QPR. I know many people ship them romantically but I don't think that would work out for them very well. (House would be the first ex-husband XD)

I don't know if it makes sense, and I yet have to figure out how Amber fits into this headcanon but whatever...

CBS’ Elementary is everything to me.

Between the “i made you breakfast” and the “i’ll see you at home” and the “when was the last time you slept?” and the “i know you didn’t eat so i brought you your leftovers” and clyde going from “pet tortoise” to “our pet tortoise” and the “we’re two people who love each other” …

They are individuals in their own right and yet depend on each other so deeply, but it’s not co-dependency, they actively choose each other everyday all the time. They are two halves of a whole but they are not incomplete as individuals, rather they lift each other up. It’s so nice to see a holmes/watson relationship that’s so unproblematic and wholesome and loving. I love this adaptation. I just love them.

hidden city novels?

ok tumblr I need you help. I played Hidden City (the mobile game) first when it came out in 2016. I I distinctly remember there being novels about the story of the game. Now I got into it again and I can’t find any information about these novels. What happened to them? Can you still read them somewhere?

The sound of faint laughter and televisions echoing through the hallways of your building made you feel at ease. It had been a long day, and to say you were relieved to finally be home was an understatement. You reciprocated James’ warm smile as you walked through the door he was holding open to your condo complex. 

"Oh, do we need to check the mailbox?" you asked him, in a half-whisper. He shook his head, and you ascended the well-worn staircase leading to your cozy condo, with James trailing just a step behind.

“Anyway, like I was saying, I think it gets too much hate. It was a fun movie,” you exclaimed, continuing up the stairs. James responded with a disapproving shake of his head.

“Agree to disagree,” he retorted playfully.

You sighed. “I’m never going to be able to convince you otherwise, am I?”

“Not a chance,” he replied, allowing his gaze to momentarily linger from the stairs to admire your presence. “And I’m never going to forgive them for what they did to–”

Suddenly, a resonant thud echoed behind you, followed by a pained groan. You gasped, and your hand instinctively flew to cover your mouth.

“Oh– James, are you okay?”

He groaned in pain. Your heart pounded as you leaned your bag against the post at the top of the staircase before you rushed to help him.

“Here, let me help you up,” you offered, placing his arm around your shoulders and assisting him back onto his feet. He winced as his injured foot touched the ground, and you gripped the handrail tightly as you bore his weight.

"These damn stairs,” James muttered, “I really should learn to be more careful.”

"It happens to the best of us,” you reassured him, sympathetically. “Let’s get you inside and sit you down, then we can take a look at it.”

You left him waiting at the top of the stairs as you descended again to retrieve his briefcase. 

“Thanks,” he said softly, smiling fondly at you as you picked up your own bag and helped him limp to the door to his condo. Once inside, you eased him onto the sofa.

Sitting across from him on a cushioned footstool, you looked at him expectantly as he carefully examined his injury for a few minutes. You were comforted by the familiar impression of intense focus on his face; you’d seen it in his eyes doing everything from the New York Times crossword puzzle to diagnosing his cancer patients. You could practically see the gears turning in his brain when the radiator's subtle hum, unnoticed until then, ceased, leaving behind a quiet void in your condo. After a few more minutes, the weight of the silence finally became unbearably uncomfortable, and you asked:

“So… what is it?”

“Well,” he sighed, looking up at you, “I don’t think it’s broken. It feels like it’s just a sprain. Some ice, compression, rest… and I should be fully healed in a few weeks,” he said, before lifting himself onto his feet. You got up from your seat and stopped him before he could make another move.

“Okay, but the acronym is RICE. Which, if I remember correctly, means the the first rule of healing a sprained ankle… is to rest,” you pointed out, matter-of-factly. 

“Yeah, but the next one is ice. I’m going to get ice before I res–”

“Hey,” you said, looking at him with feigned sternness. His eternally pleading eyes made it so hard to get genuinely angry with him. You placed your hand on his chest and lightly coaxed him back down onto the sofa. He pursed his lips and obliged, never breaking eye contact. 

“I know you’re a fancy doctor and everything but just… let me take care of you, okay? Relax, I’ll get you what you need,” you said, softening your tone and tenderly stroking his face with your thumb. You sealed your sentiment with a gentle kiss on his cheek before heading to the kitchen to get ice. James’ gaze softened and he smiled as he watched you make your way to the freezer before he picked up the nearest magazine. He swiveled on the sofa to lay back and let his injured foot rest on the armrest.

When you returned with some ice wrapped in a towel and a compression wrap, you found James nodded off with his magazine open on his stomach. You lightened your footsteps as you approached him to avoid disturbing him, a gentle smile creeping onto your face. Kneeling on the floor by his head, you cupped his face with your hand and gingerly stroked his cheek, then lightly ran your fingers through his soft curls, stirring him awake. 

“Hmm?” 

“Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.” Your fingers tingled as you felt him melt under your touch. “I got some ice and a bandage. For compression, right?”

“Yeah,” he said, rubbing his eyes. You got up off the ground, pulled the footstool over to the sofa’s armrest, and applied the ice to his ankle. He lifted his head just barely enough to see what you were doing. There was a subtle glint of worry in his eye, and you reassured him it was going to be okay.

“You can go back to sleep, you know,” you whispered. James let his head fall backwards and stared blankly at the ceiling, letting his thoughts wander, first shuffling through his list of dying patients, then to plotting how he was going to get back at House for that stupid prank he had pulled on him earlier, then to how he forgot to ask Cuddy about the budget for new equipment for the oncology department, and finally back to you. Every aspect of his job as an oncologist dictated that he was to be a caretaker, and to have someone take care of him was overwhelming, in a good way. As a generally independent person, he wasn’t used to being shown this level of compassion. He felt his heart grow warm thinking about how lucky he was to have you looking after him, how good you were to him, and how much he loved you.

“All done,” you whispered, satisfied with your work. Wilson once again looked up at his now-bandaged foot, then at you. His movement startled you briefly, as you assumed he had gone back to sleep like you had suggested.

“Woah, I thought you were asleep? I was just about to go get a sticker for you, you were very well behaved,” you grinned.

He rolled his eyes playfully and unsuccessfuly tried to suppress a smile. “That’s a solid wrapping job, perfect even.” he approved. Your eyes sparkled with pride, and he instantly felt a familiar warm, fuzzy sensation coursing through him. Just as he was about to open his mouth to speak, you planted a tender kiss on his lips that left him feeling entirely flushed, and as you were about to walk away, he grabbed your hand and pulled you back in for another kiss, this time more passionate. 

“Mmm… just what the doctor ordered.” His warm breath lingered against your skin, and his expression turned more serious as he looked into your eyes. “I love you, you know,” he confessed, earnestly.

“I know,” you giggled. “I love you too.”

something about the way watson is immediately intrigued by holmes's character ("the proper study of man is mankind,") immediately begins studying the man like an anthropologist, has a natural inclination to help people, and continues to write and think about Who Holmes Is in addition to chronicling his actual work makes me think that, if the field had existed, he'd have been a psychologist.

something about being a doctor and then transitioning into the exact type of writer he becomes, his concern for holmes, his preoccupation with the unknown/darker aspects of human nature/taboo subjects not often addressed, his innate compassion... lad was writing letters to Freud fr (don't do it watson)

Shipping is fun and all but I swear every single time someone makes a comment, whether as a joke or in a legitimate analysis, about there being "no other explanation" for a pair's interactions, I lose just a bit more of my sanity

Like, no, you guys don't get it. Romance is not about the Amount of devotion, it's about the COLOR. the FLAVOR of it all. a character can be just as devoted to their platonic friend as they are to their romantic partner, and they don't love either of them more, just differently.

But because the majority of people still have it stuck in their minds that romance exists on the highest tier of love, I'm stuck seeing endless takes that boil down to "these two care about each other too much for it to NOT be romantic" as if that's the core determining factor to how literally any of this works

In conclusion: stop telling me that I don't understand the story if I don't interpret the leads as romantic, I am TIRED

I just saw that it is a book you can buy, that is supposed to be Holmes's journal that he wrote during his time in Sussex, which is also supposed to reference a marriage to Mrs Hudson (?!) and other things. All the booksellers list the author as Sherlock Holmes (which obv. can't be true) and Google can tell me nothing about it. Is it fanfiction, that just happened to be sold as a book? What is this?

Do you ever think of Holmes alone at Baker Street after Watson's marriage and. And. And Watson's things are gone. Watson is gone, and there is just this aching gap around Holmes in the flat. The dust has not yet covered the space on the shelf where Watson's books used to be. Half of Holmes's home is gone, and he cannot even run his finger along the edge of the pain because there will only be one plate on the breakfast table tomorrow (and tomorrow and tomorrow), but you can't cut yourself on empty space.

Can we talk about Elementary for a moment? Because this show is so fucking amazing I can’t. The premise is questionable, to say the least. „We’re gonna make a Sherlock Holmes adaption. But what if John is a woman called Joan and what if she is American? Oh and the whole thing is set in New York.“

Best start for a horrible American washed gender swap romance adaption but nothing could be further from the truth. Usually when the gender of a character is changed from canon it is to push some strange heteronormative romance sub plot but NO not Elementary.

The PLATONIC relationship between Joan and Sherlock is so amazingly done. It is the best portrayal of a QPR (queerplatonic relationship) I have ever seen in media. And even if we don’t take qprs into account we see a rich, deep, trusting friendship full of so much love. Elementary had the guts to use the word love in a platonic way, something other Sherlock Holmes adaptions (I’m looking at you BBC) never dared to do. And this in a show where Holmes and Watson are opposite genders, so the association with romance is done even quicker. Meanwhile, we watch Watson struggle with traditional dating and amatonormativity until she finally finds happiness in her platonic partnership with Sherlock and later as a single mum.

Elementary is also the only adaption I’ve seen that really explores Holmes's addiction. Usually, even in ACD canon, his drug addiction is treated as some personality quirk. An annoying habit but nothing more. But that is not how addiction works. Especially not with hard drugs like morphine and cocaine if we look at Canon or heroin in case of BBC and Elementary. Elementary puts great focus on Sherlock's long, presumably lifelong struggle with addiction and the great strength and effort it takes for him to stay clean. It emphasizes his need for a stable support system and doesn’t downplay addiction like a lot of Sherlock Holmes adaptions do. This is amazing.

Another great thing is the casualness of how queer people are incorporated into the story. They are just there. Their queerness isn’t the focus of their story, it is just part of who they are. Mrs. Hutson is trans but the focus is on the many influential men she has had affairs with. Victims are queer. Suspects are queer. Police are queer. Queer people just exist in this show without making it a big deal.

Even tho it isn't a perfect ACD Holmes adaption especially if we look at Sherlock's character I love this show so much.

Inspired from a conversation with my friend, something I feel about Sherlock Holmes, is that to read him as unempathetic, monotone and emotionless, is to misread his mask for truth. Holmes's real state only comes out around those he trusts; Watson, of course, being the prime example.

For an instant the veil had lifted upon his keen, intense nature, but for an instant only. When I glanced again his face had resumed that red-Indian composure which had made so many regard him as a machine rather than a man. [CROO]

for a moment I saw something in his eyes which was nearer to tenderness than I had ever seen. The next instant he was his masterful, practical self once more. [BRUC]

We often see Holmes highly expressive and unable to contain himself at the peak of his enjoyment and stimulation of a case, and often this is something he actively suppresses. (God, we're all thinking about that scene in SIXN - or 3GAR, aren't we?)

There was a gleam in his eyes and a suppressed excitement in his manner which convinced me, used as I was to his ways, that his hand was upon a clue. [SILV]

Holmes had taken out his watch, and as minute followed minute without result, an expression of the utmost chagrin and disappointment appeared upon his features. He gnawed his lip, drummed his fingers upon the table, and showed every other symptom of acute impatience. So great was his emotion, that I felt sincerely sorry for him, while the two detectives smiled derisively, by no means displeased at this check which he had met. [STUD]

Holmes is actively masking his excitement very often, and it's through his relationship with Watson and success in his career that he learns to accept and be his openly emotional self more and more as we progress through the Canon. Aside from this, Holmes is highly emotional and compassionate towards his clients, take FIVE, SPEC, or ILLU. I don't think ACD tumblr is really the audience that needs to hear this, but I want people to read this who understand where I'm coming from. I feel that Sherlock Holmes is so often misunderstood as genuinely dispassionate, when this is, in fact, the act, the mask, the antic disposition that he wants those around him to believe.

To believe that Holmes's coldness is in any way a truth doesn't fly with me. For me it's nothing more than defence-mechanism, which, to be fair, is what most intolerable behaviour really is. However, I would disagree with anyone who argues that it is a natural part of Holmes.

Why Sherlock Holmes's Introduction Scene is Important to his Autism Coding

Ive made several sherlock holmes posts now so obviously i now have to talk about autism-

Im not an expert in autism for starters but i did discuss this with many people and it was one of the clearest scenes i remembered when judging Sherlock adaptations. I would dare to say Holmes's introduction is one of the most important scenes to his autism-coding, and that when adaptations fail to realize its importance, it also tends to reflect on how they code Holmes.

We hear about Holmes before we see him. The description of him is more than a bit negative and uncomfortable at this time, with Stamford being overcautious and warning Watson about Holmes's tempers. While i cant read this now without the pop culture knowledge of Holmes, I suppose it was to build up tension as to what sort of strange scientist he would be.

Yet when we meet Holmes, hes doing some chemical work. When he spots Watson and Stamford, he immediately runs over to them and excitedly shows them that hes made a chemical that detects hemoglobin. He only briefly brings up Watson's military career, just the barest hint to intrigue us.

He then starts rambling excitedly and passionately about how his chemicals work. He goes into the effect they have on his job, and criminal justice as a whole. Him infodumping about his passions is a fantastic introduction by the way, but some people skip it or place more focus on extending his deductions of Watsons life. This introduction does a lot to show how overall passionate he is about his work, and that it is what he cares to be speaking on (this is one of the rare times we see him out of case mode).

I think its worth it to note that while the scene is written with hints of Watson being overwhelmed, he seems willing to go along with whatever Holmes is saying. Basically, while he finds Holmes's demeanor odd, he still tries to engage positively and follow what Holmes is saying.

They also exchange things each other should know as roommates, both relatively cheerful and relaxed about it. Watsons behavior is what i consider also important for his characterization, but i am here to talk about Holmes (oh just you wait watson-)

The thing is, this introduction is one of the most humanizing depictions of Holmes. While he is talking about crime, this shows early on he has interests related to it that arent just "deduction." It is also a very active conversation from him! He infodumps incredibly excitedly, projecting more than he seems to normally, interrupting Watson several times, and forgoing social convention.

This can be seen in direct contrast to how Stamford introduces him, showing the humanity and passion behind what he described. It gives us an even broader view of Holmes from the get go.

Holmes's introduction codes him as autistic by showing what he looks like when *excited*

The fact the first thing we get to see of this character is his overwhelming care and passion for his work is not only important to his character, it should be the basis for his autism coding. He is excited! He gets overwhelmed with how he likes his work! He forgets not everyone else knows what he does! He wants to show, share, and explain it to everyone in good humor!

To me, that is something ive experienced with every autistic person ive known, and the details of it are so, so instrumental

Definitely not the last time I’m going to talk about this but the relationship that Holmes has to Watson’s writing is so so interesting to me.

He obviously loves the attention to some extent, (Holmes’ relationship with attention seeking is a whole bag of worms) but in addition to his obvious gripes about the way in which Watson writes (tales rather than lectures etc, etc) he seems to have complex feelings on how much they focus on him.

Post retirement Holmes says he wants to reject notoriety altogether, implying that he only allowed Watson to help him gain it because it would be of professional value to him. While I’m not sure I fully believe him there, I can definitely see how that would be the easiest way for him to rationalize the stories and their popularity. But still, this is the same blushing sensitive to flattery Holmes who is constantly putting on a show for Watson and by extension his readers.

Even if Holmes is embarrassed by it, he enjoys it. Full stop. But he also hates it. And there are definitely a bunch of different reasons why he could dislike the stories, but I think the most obvious reason is that Watson can’t seem to decide weather to idolize or humanize him. Holmes dislikes that Watson doesn’t include many of his failures while at the same time hating when his magic tricks are explained. And maybe thats unfair of him, he can’t have it both ways, but if he can’t then why can Watson?

I also can’t help but think about all the times where Watson describes Holmes as cold, machine like, etc. I’m not sure how Holmes feels about that in canon (if he refers to it at some point let me know) but I know that when people have described me in similar ways it really fucking hurt. At the same time it’s tempting to take pride in it, an insult that becomes a complement if you lock enough parts of yourself away.

IDK like I said I’m not done talking about this just wanted to ramble for a second.

Re-reading Sherlock Holmes and it strikes me all over again that the main draw of this man is not his intelligence but his kindness and courteousness towards his distressed clients, most especially women. I was like ten when I read my Dad's copy of Adventures and so fascinated and attached to him immediately. It could never be replicated by modern interpretations, especially Moffat's Sherlock. *soul deep shudder* I hated the series from the get-go and couldn't figure out why until I saw that Tumblr post that pointed it out.

Also? Irene Adler's sexualisation is obviously gross and so much less progressive and agentive than the version this Victorian man wrote, but I'm also repulsed by the sexualisation of Sherlock Holmes. The man hasn't had a boner in his life. It's canon that he's never had any interest in women and his only close relationship with a man was Watson, and all power to slash fans, but there's absolutely nothing in canon that hints at anything but a friendship of, get this, mutual respect and admiration. This is the most aroace character in the English canon is what I'm saying, and the most generous interpretation of his relationship with Watson is a queerplatonic connection.

TL;DR: Perpetually flabbergasted how we got from a very gentlemanly, deeply compassionate, grown-ass adult who never talks down to Watson nor burdens anyone, to this entitled misogynistic manbaby with the social skills of a hornet.
