I FINISHED IT. I FINISHED ORV. it’s been a bit more than two years since I originally found the Webtoon and I think almost exactly two years since I started reading the webnovel (yeah..stuff got in the way shshsjs) I am. Umm. Hard to describe how I feel but I’m not sad it’s over, at least. Bc it doesn’t feel like it’s over. I’ll get to reread it again yknow? And as long as it lives in my head, it’ll never really be over. But oh boy do I have a LOT of thoughts. I think I made like 5 new notes in quick succession in my fiction folder today just thinking about orv. I might put some thoughts here later? (I am kind of afraid of everyone disagreeing with like anything and everything I say tho which is why I don’t post my thoughts here a lot 😭) I guess I have a few things I can say lol. Yes the epilogue converted me from a diehard joongdok shipper and casual doksoo shipper to a full on yoohankim-and-that’s-the-only-option shipper 💀 also I’m sad. There’s so much sadness in this story. Idk what else to say even though I have so much to talk about djdbsj but Ig I just wanted to say that I finished orv finally 🎉 OH ALSO orv is officially my favorite book and Kdj is officially my favorite character ever. scenario #31: microwave

Low-key thinking about how a Squid Games joongdok could be an interesting story. Kim Dokja joins the games because, like everyone else, he's in desperate need of money. He's hounded by loan sharks, has no family he can turn to, and is in wretched straits. But when he realizes that this is a death game, he doesn't have much expectation to win. He didn't have friends growing up. He barely played these childhood games and only knew them through passive observation. They weren't difficult, at least, but he doesn't expect to make it far at all.

However, he's smart. And after meeting another man Yoo Joonghyuk, his plans change a bit. Yoo Joonghyuk helps him to cross the finish line in one of the games despite the risk to himself. And after that, Kim Dokja learns a bit about him and how Yoo Joonghyuk is single-handedly taking care of his little sister and needs this money to escape from the basically-slavery job he currently has that's keeping him financially trapped in shady business. But he doesn't like the thought of everyone around him dying to get him that money and fully plans to vote to end the games (even if it doesn't work out).

Kim Dokja decides that he's going to survive and help Yoo Joonghyuk out. He might not be able to save himself (nor does he really want to), but maybe his death can be a noble thing for a guy like Yoo Joonghyuk. So, without telling Yoo Joonghyuk, he fully plans to assist this guy to reach the end no matter what. Up to and including his sacrifice.

The conversations these people have are SO deranged. In the span of a single page

1.Han Sooyoung says she will seduce Yoo Joonghyuk, being delusionally overconfidant considering he has killed her once already but go off girlboss, live your #femalemanipulator #femmefatale fantasy

2. Kim Dokja looks her up and down and tells her she is 'so flat and so short being attracted to you is pedophilia & I know for a fact Yoo Joonghyuk is not a pedophile" which is SHADE that could only come from a gay man

3. They both recall the last time they met Yoo Joonghyuk. Kim Dokja casually says 'you know I beat him up last time I saw him so he probably wants to kill me lol' and Han Sooyoung strokes her neck and wistfully reminisces about her own beheading (??)

What I'm saying is that there's something very wrong with all three of them that is SO compelling. This is how you write character interactions

rereading the 1863rd arc and like. its so crazy to me how kim dokja spends so much of orv going ok 1863rd yoo joonghyuk is a monster hes a man driven insane by an incalculable amount of suffering he's so cruel just too far gone basically not even human and then he meets him and kim dokjas immediately like. trying to save his life. stroking his hair. giving him the first good nights rest since the regressions started. telling him to 'remember happy things'. planning to stay in the 1863rd round just to help him. and i don't think this is a case of kim dokja not understanding how 'evil' or dangerous this yoo joonghyuk is i think this is a case where he fully knows but can't stop himself from feeling pity and care and understanding like. he truly loves every version of yoo joonghyuk no matter what! he just can't help it!

I was working on the 32nd part of the Dokhyuk moments, but all of the sudden, I am hit with the middle section of chapter 412. I’m sorry what is this and why does no one talk about it? If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, here’s a hint: The romantic subtext and the chemistry between Metatron and Agares.

So, I decided to take a break from Dokhyuk and write down the moments between two old men. Or the moment, I suppose.

Metatron x Agares

Agares laughed again, sounding as if he was sick and tired of it. Metatron understood the meaning of this laughter better than anyone.

*sighs

The ‘Good and Evil’; they might be on the opposing sides, but they understood each other better than anyone else in the world.

That sound familiar to anyone? *looks at Dokja*

This- this is a line that has been used in romcoms from centuries. Childhood friend confessing to the dense MC culture. This is told from Matatron’s point of view-

Um. This parallels to Dokja not being able to read Jonghyuk’s expression that one time.

This yet again parallels Dokja and Jonghyuk holding hands as they announce their new nebula.

They have less than half of one chapter of dialogue yet there’s so many parallels.

Because Dokja didn’t name his nebula ‘Forbidden ••’, we should give- I should really stop now.

As the fragments of stories splattered around like real blood, the latter looked up into the sky.

[Isnt this beautiful, Metatron? This is our end.]

The duet of ‘Good and Evil’ dimly continuing on was now flowing within the night sky of the apocalypse.

He saw the cascading meteor shower and grinned brightly.

ROMCOM ENERGY. That is all I will say.

Am I ashamed of myself for doing this? Yes.

No words can describe how much I love time shenanigan romance and the devastation it brings

Thinking about Tenet again, and I'm actually so unwell about it

Like we don't even know the Protagonist's name but the story is all about him, and none of this could happen without him, and no one even knows his name.

And his 2 most important relationships are 2 people he's destined to lose.

He's never going to see Kat face to face ever again. He loves her. Is it romantic, is it platonic, is it just the act of two people who are treated like nobody seeing each other and feeling seen, idk, but the love is there. And they're never going to see each other again because they can't, because it's what's for the best. He's got too many potential enemies and she has to move on with her life, the safety of her son is her priority, and she can't sustain that if she's hanging around the Protagonist.

Don't even get me started on Neil. Neil, who recruits him. Neil, who is fated to die in order for the mission to be successful, Neil, who has to die to save the world. Neil, who is later/earlier on, recruited by the Protagonist. He has to know that when he sees Neil in the future, when he introduces himself again to a man who doesn't know him but who he knows so well he's haunted by him, that as soon as he recruits him, he's signing his death warrant. And he has no choice because the only options are the fate of the world and Neil, but I'm sure he still hesitates because it's Neil. How many hours do you think he wasted trying to find another solution, trying to find a way for Neil to live, only to fail and have to send him off to death anyway because Neil was right all along and, "What's happened's happened." And their timeline is all out of whack, they've each had their first meetings at different times in different orders. And Neil probably figures it out sometime that he's going to die and the Protagonist has lived through it once, because that's just the dangers of the field they're in. Meanwhile, the Protagonist must be counting down the days until Neil's final mission, until his past self meets Kat and Neil and learns about all of this.

Because it's not bad enough that he has to lose both of them once, he knows that in a way, he's going to lose them both again. At least one more time.

You know, I kinda think that Kim Dokja had actually recognized Yoo Joonghyuk as the Punisher, if not at the beginning then at least later on, but he just… convinced himself that the two couldn’t possibly be the same. Because he considers the notion of Yoo Joonghyuk becoming a girl to be something that’s impossible. We see that early on when he met Kim Namwoon in the Underworld in chapter 113:

The Delusional Demon Kim Namwoon reflecting was as impossible as Yoo Joonghyuk becoming a girl.

Of course, Kim Namwoon was confirmed to be telling the truth about reflecting on himself right away (which was a really good foreshadowing for the Punisher, lol), but Kim Dokja still has a hard time believing it because it’s just something he considers to not be possible. And he puts Yoo Joonghyuk becoming a girl at the same level. That’s how impossible it is to him. Later on, he even says this in chapter 251:

A strange feeling entered my heart. Perhaps? I had a thought but it wasn't possible. It was impossible for such a thing to come true, no matter how I thought about it.

This is right after Aileen told him that the Punisher had disappeared at the same time Yoo Joonghyuk had departed with him. While he did momentarily consider the notion of the Punisher and Yoo Joonghyuk being the same being, he dismissed it as he was still convinced that it’s impossible. And this is at a point when not only has his favorite novel become reality, but he also knows that his male ex-boss had gotten pregnant and given birth. And even in the midst of all that, even with everything he’s seen possible under the Star Stream, the idea of Yoo Joonghyuk becoming a girl is still inconceivable to him.

Now that we have seen just how deeply convinced Kim Dokja is that Yoo Joonghyuk and the Punisher cannot be the same, let’s have a look at something else. Namely, Yoo Sangah’s POV in chapter 267:

A dazzling aura burst from Yoo Joonghyuk's body. Soft hair poured down like a waterfall while his large size became a smaller and sleeker body. He took the form that allowed him to practice the ultimate Breaking the Sky Swordsmanship. Yoo Sangah stared at the scene from behind and couldn't help opening her mouth. “…Yoo Joonghyuk-ssi?”

Yoo Joonghyuk slowly turned back, his long hair cut off by the Black Heavenly Demon Sword. The lines of the face had changed but it was clearly Yoo Joonghyuk. No, it was even more than before. Yoo Joonghyuk's gaze stayed on Kim Dokja's face for a moment.

Yoo Joonghyuk transformed into his female form during the 73rd Demon Realm’s demon king selection and Yoo Sangah witnessed the scene. The lines of the face had changed but it was clearly Yoo Joonghyuk—even in his female form, he is recognisably still Yoo Joonghyuk. Sure, early on the people at the now Yoo Joonghyuk - Kim Dokja industrial complex didn’t clock the Punisher as female Yoo Joonghyuk either, but they also weren’t too familiar with his looks at that point. That’s not the case with Yoo Sangah, and definitely not the case with Kim Dokja. Another point to note is how it’s mentioned that Yoo Joonghyuk has a smaller body in this form—a different skeletal structure, so to speak.

Now finally, there’s this bit in chapter 269 when Kim Dokja carries the dying Yoo Joonghyuk away from Surya and the other constellations:

Yoo Joonghyuk was barely breathing. The weight of his body was lighter than usual. He had suffered such severe pain that even the skeleton of his body seemed changed.

The bit I want to focus on here is “even the skeleton of his body seemed changed”. As mentioned, Yoo Joonghyuk has a smaller skeleton in his female form. So he’s a girl at this point. The main difference in his appearance at this point compared to the Punisher who Kim Dokja saw previously is that Yoo Joonghyuk cut his hair. And Kim Dokja recognised him. Even if he hadn’t actually subconsciously figured out who the mysterious Punisher was prior to this, he was definitely able to recognise Yoo Joonghyuk in his female form at this moment.

So the main conclusions here are that Yoo Joonghyuk is very much recognizable in his female form and that Kim Dokja is capable of recognizing him simply with a haircut. So I personally believe that Kim Dokja was fully capable of knowing that Yoo Joonghyuk = the Punisher, but he was just so adamant about Yoo Joonghyuk turning into a girl to be something completely impossible that he made himself believe that the two were different people.

I wanna see orv fics that are canon scenes but from yjh’s perspective. Idk wouldn’t that be good?? I don’t trust my own writing “skills” though lol
