k2.. but like lesbians
A critical failure that ended one mission has borne an unexpected and an exciting new science opportunity. The Kepler spacecraft, known for finding thousands of planets orbiting other stars, has a new job as the K2 mission.
Like its predecessor, K2 detects the tiny, telltale dips in the brightness of a star as an object passes or transits it, to possibly reveal the presence of a planet. Searching close neighboring stars for near-Earth-sized planets, K2 is finding planets ripe for follow-up studies on their atmospheres and to see what the planet is made of. A step up from its predecessor, K2 is revealing new info on comets, asteroids, dwarf planets, ice giants and moons. It will also provide new insight into areas as diverse as the birth of new stars, how stars explode into spectacular supernovae, and even the evolution of black holes.
K2 is expanding the planet-hunting legacy and has ushered in entirely new opportunities in astrophysics research, yet this is only the beginning.
Searching Nearby for Signs of Life

Scientists are excited about nearby multi-planet system known as K2-3. This planetary system, discovered by K2, is made of three super-Earth-sized planets orbiting a cool M-star (or red dwarf) 135 light-years away, which is relatively close in astronomical terms. To put that distance into perspective, if the Milky Way galaxy was scaled down to the size of the continental U.S. it would be the equivalent of walking the three-mile long Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California. At this distance, our other powerful space-investigators – the Hubble Space Telescope and the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) – could study the atmospheres of these worlds in search of chemical fingerprints that could be indicative of life. K2 expects to find a few hundred of these close-by, near-Earth-sized neighbors.
K2 won’t be alone in searching for nearby planets outside our solar system. Revving up for launch around 2017-2018, our Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) plans to monitor 200,000 close stars for planets, with a focus on finding Earth and Super-Earth-sized planets.

Neptune's Moon Dance
Movie credit: NASA Ames/SETI Institute/J. Rowe
Spying on our neighbors in our own solar system, K2 caught Neptune in a dance with its moons Triton and Nereid. On day 15 (day counter located in the top right-hand corner of the green frame) of the sped-up movie, Neptune appears, followed by its moon Triton, which looks small and faint. Keen-eyed observers can also spot Neptune's tiny moon Nereid at day 24. Neptune is not moving backward but appears to do so because of the changing position of the Kepler spacecraft as it orbits around the sun. A few fast-moving asteroids make cameo appearances in the movie, showing up as streaks across the K2 field of view. The red dots are a few of the stars K2 examines in its search for transiting planets outside of our solar system. An international team of astronomers is using these data to track Neptune’s weather and probe the planet’s internal structure by studying subtle brightness fluctuations that can only be observed with K2.
Dead Star Devours Planet
K2 also caught a white dwarf – the dead core of an exploded star –vaporizing a nearby tiny rocky planet. Slowly the planet will disintegrate, leaving a dusting of metals on the surface of the star. This trail of debris blocks a tiny fraction of starlight from the vantage point of the spacecraft producing an unusual, but vaguely familiar pattern in the data. Recognizing the pattern, scientists further investigated the dwarf’s atmosphere to confirm their find. This discovery has helped validate a long-held theory that white dwarfs are capable of cannibalizing possible remnant planets that have survived within its solar system.
Searching for Far Out Worlds
NASA/JPL-Caltech
In April, spaced-based K2 and ground-based observatories on five continents will participate in a global experiment in exoplanet observation and simultaneously monitor the same region of sky towards the center of our galaxy to search for small planets, such as the size of Earth, orbiting very far from their host star or, in some cases, orbiting no star at all. For this experiment, scientists will use gravitational microlensing – the phenomenon that occurs when the gravity of a foreground object focuses and magnifies the light from a distant background star.
The animation demonstrates the principles of microlensing. The observer on Earth sees the source (distant) star when the lens (closer) star and planet pass through the center of the image. The inset shows what may be seen through a ground-based telescope. The image brightens twice, indicating when the star and planet pass through the observatory's line of sight to the distant star.

Regardless of whether you are arranging a trek to K2 base camp or need to put your mountaineering energy under a magnifying glass by endeavoring to ascend the second most elevated mountain on earth youll need to set yourself up to battle despite seemingly insurmountable opposition of nature Ascending the most elevated mountain in Pakistan or trekking to its base camp isnt the fledgling travelers assignment
As you rise to the base camp of the 8611m mountain in the Karakorum mountain scope of Pakistan the air winds up more slender oxygen turns out to be less accessible and breathing turns out to be hard Likewise infamous as the savage mountain that attempts to slaughter you K2 presents genuine dangers to both the trekker and the veteran mountain dweller be that as it may the dangers for the energetic hiker increases as the person climbs the mountain
Tallness infection intense mountain disorder and pulmonic edema are the regular wellbeing dangers related with practically a wide range of experience to this mountain yet as sound judgment would recommend these dangers are higher for climbers who expect to summit K2 than experience darlings whod basic need to trek to the savage mountains base camp Understand that the wellbeing complexities related with high height as referenced above can be hazardous
The uplifting news in any case is that you can limit the high height chances by acclimatizing and preparing your body to adapt to the ecological components and to continue working notwithstanding when there is deficiency of oxygen The following are a few hints to get ready for climbing K2 and trekking to the K2 base camp
• Start getting ready and acclimatizing at any rate two months in front of your experience This is especially significant in light of the fact that your body needs at any rate 60 days for high height acclimatization
• Visit your specialist and get full body examination as your begin your arrangements and preparing Your specialist may prescribe you to experience certain lab tests In the event that you are fit for the experience your specialist will give you a green sign related post
• During your preparation period make a point to climb and trek as regularly as could be expected under the circumstances beginning with lower height and step by step moving to higher elevations if conceivable and accessible With each session of your preparation make a point to build the separation and stature so your body and lungs get habituated to working at high height and under strenuous conditions
• If conceivable start interim preparing in light of the fact that it is a standout amongst the best techniques to prepare your cardiovascular framework for high heights It includes expanding the pulse definitely and afterward leaving it to recover before expanding it once more Running on a more extreme slope or quicker dash can help train your cardiovascular framework for your K2 experience
• Train your breathing example for high height by dealing with breathing movement and on profound inward breath and exhalation This preparation will enable you to adapt to low oxygen on K2 by empowering you to direct and keep up your breathing limit Rehearsing profound breathing can likewise spare your from surpassing yourself at high elevations
• Never miss an exercise since it is essential to keep you protected and fit during your endeavor to climb K2 or trek to K2 base camp previous post
K2 Red Telephone Box 1926
The noble Red Telephone Box is a British institution, inspiring warm thoughts and a distinctively British style across the generations. Britain's very first red booth design was the cast-iron K2, which very quickly became ubiquitous throughout London and the surrounding areas throughout the 1920s and 1930s.
Britain’s Red Telephone Boxes continued to take inspiration from the K2 throughout the entire payphone era, and copies and tributes to the design can still be found in phone booths around the world today.

so here’s a k2 au where kyle somehow managed to notice kenny’s deaths, and how i imagine his reaction would be.
first of all, we all know kyle’s saviour complex and his “older brother” behaviour, so i strongly believe he would be shocked by kenny’s immortality and his first intention is simple af – to protect kenny and not let him die anymore. it’s kind of a subconscious thing, but i think kyle would feel guilt for not knowing about kenny’s sufferings, he’d feel like a shitty friend, and would want to restore his reputation by “saving kenny”. he would make it like some sort of his moral obligation.
and that was great at the beginning because kenny is not used to such caring protective treatment, but as the time passed kyle would become more, uh, insistent?
he would have unknowingly deprived kenny of the opportunity to enjoy those crumbs of a happy, calm, free life that he had, because of his overprotection.
he really didn’t mean to discomfort kenny though, but it just. happened?... because kyle is very overprotective and sometimes he can “suffocate” with his care as we can see it from his interactions with ike.
i can literally see a scene where they all went to a potentially dangerous place such as amusement park, and kyle doesn’t want kenny to get hurt so they avoid “dangerous” things.
someone suggests to kyle and kenny to go to the rides, kenny smiles happily and is already running towards the roller coaster, but kyle grabs his hand and pulls him towards the children's carousels instead, saying that the rest is too dangerous,
and kenny is sitting on this children's carousel next to kindergarteners, with a dreary look on his face. he sees stan and cartman, screaming with delight on the adult attractions, and sighs very sadly.
and this happens more and more because kyle is responsible and he doesn’t want to break his promise. and one day kenny just gets so sick of this, like… i see how they can start arguing, because kenny wants to do something dangerous, and kyle holds him back, and kenny just loses his temper (he can get really furious when people are trying to take what gives him joy, as we see in s12e3 “major boobage”).
and kyle also gets angry so he replies smth like: "But look, how long has it been since your last death??? Two months, Kenny!! You’ve never been alive for such a long time in a row! All thanks to my care!" and kenny, who is already freaking out on emotions, says something like "WELL MAYBE DYING WAS MORE FUN THAN HANGING OUT WITH YOU!" and kyle gets so devastated. so he just frowns with a blank look, mumbles quiet “Oh… I see” and leaves.
and then after this, it has been like two or three days already, kenny dies once again, so he remembers how this can hurt. he feels a bit guilty about his words, so he comes up to kyle and they finally have a talk:
kyle: You… you really think I’m hurting you with my protection?
kenny: (Wait, no, I didn’t mean to offend you–)
kyle: But you think so, don’t you?
kenny: (It’s just… I’m used to dying, Kyle, I don’t need this much concern.)
kyle: But I… I know that but, it’s like… when I imagine you being injured or dead… Everything inside me just aches and shrinks, and… I guess I am overreacting, but I just don’t want you to go through something like this any more than needed.
kenny: (Aw :( )
kyle: I’m sorry, Kenny, I didn’t mean to…
kenny: *hugs* (That’s fine.)
and they’re finally fine. at least they’re trying to find this golden middle between protection and recklessness :3
K2 appreciation post. I'm so emotional about them 💔
For me, their relationship is "Kyle supports Kenny, and Kenny supports Kyle".
Out of main four, Kyle is acknowledging and overall appreciating Kenny the most. He's also almost always the first one to consider Kenny's problems and help him with them, like it was in Major Boobage (S12E3), where Kenny was struggling with addiction. Other even more significant example is S14E3, where Mysterion tells others about his
immortality. Even tho it didn't really work after all, Kyles does something that no one did before: He sees Mysterion's reaction, how upset he is, and decides to consider Mysterion's words as true. We can't really tell if he actually did or he pretended to just so he can make Mysterion feel better (still sus), but the truth is: No one has ever tried before. Except for Kyle.
And it's not only Kyle supporting Kenny. Kenny does too. I'd say he doesn't directly participate it Kyle's problems, but I freak out every time when Kenny's trying to comfort Kyle with his words or touches.
I'm gonna leave this next one without commentary, because they are just so 💔💔
The most honorable mention: Jewbilee (S3E9). I'm just. I'm not even gonna talk about how at the start of the episode Kenny was inviting Kyle to watch a meteor show with him, how Kyle was determined to take Kenny with him to Jewbilee ("Maybe you can go with me! Then it won't suck so hard!" KYLE BROFLOVSKI??). But THIS LINE is my absolute favorite. Yes Kyle, he is special. Please, if you love these two as much as I do, rewatch this episode. It's just them, spending time together and some shit happening
Lastly, if I talk about the ship specifically, I would like to add how I see their romantic relationships: They probably wouldn't have the "childhood crush" thingy. What I more prefer is, them growing up a bit afar from each other (not literally afar. just. emotionally yk yk), keeping their happy memories, but eventually coming back to each other, as they realize how similar they are to each other and how much comfort and healing they can give each other (I can make a post about this)
