Silence is a label, a cover for the smaller, more intimate details of life, Bucky has endured his fair share of silence. He didn't cherish it, within the loud noises of gun firing and the screams of the people who fell victim to him, just a puppet, he hid. In those moments when his heart thrumed and beated wildly in his chest, the screams so loud they gave way to nothingness, the silence of electricity rushing through his brain, the silence ripping at the last pieces of who he used to be, the realization that he was losing all he had by the minute and he could do nothing, silence. He hated it.
Well until you came along.
You with your sweet ringing laughter and the mischievous glint in it that he found himself chasing. It was there that day when he met you, the carefree giggles that filled the air and lit him up from the inside out, it knocked the breath out of him, legs moving without thought and then he found himself standing right in front of you. You standing behind the counter with your friend laughing together, it was then that he realized that it wasn't loud at all, anyone standing a few feet away from the diner would have never even heard it, but he wasn't anyone.
He frequented that diner from then on, sometimes he could feel your eyes lingering on him, or hear your friend whisper teasingly to you, the light blush dusting your cheeks was proof enough, but he stopped himself from going further. This was too good to be true, that light that surrounded you, it was too good to be tainted just like that, he brought trouble along with him, he would never let you hurt because of him, he would make sure of it.
It took him seeing you deal with a bad customer to stop wallowing alone in his sadness and pent up affection for you. He hadn't spared a single thought before he went up and put the guy in his place, it wasn't very hard either. It had earned him a grateful smile, he knew that he'd take down worse just to keep you smiling. You'd taken a chance then and sat with him in his seat despite the risk of your boss seeing and it had nothing to with him defending her honor.
Just one taste and he was back for more, like a moth to your flame, only it warmed him up better than the best cup of cocoa and a loving hug, he'd come again just to have you sit across sneakily and talk for however much time you could,he asked you out soon.
It had been a steady ride since, sometimes he found it hard to believe that someone so brilliant and amazing as you could ever love someone like him, it's been two summers since he'd met and concluded that you were everything he'd ever need.
You both had problems of your own, struggles and pain and regrets and fears but you endured them together. Bucky couldn't find it within him to forgive his own self for the atrocities he'd committed under other's control, he didn't think he deserved it either, sometimes regret and resentment over power the best of love but they'd rode that wave together as well. He worked hard to turn his thoughts around and tried to learn how to love himself.
And then somewhere along the way he started loving the silence too.
The silence of when he'd wrap himself around you, feel you cradle his face against your chest, whisper sweet reassuring words and chase away his fears away, when you would sit together in the dead of the night and rock together with nothing but the sound of two hearts beating together to fill the space. When he didn't need to explain why he needed to feel you close, for him to feel secure in your arms, because you just knew.
The silence that filled the air as you wiped away at the blood that covered him in places, his and others. The concerned scolding giving way to loving care when you take care of him, stitch his wounded arm up like you had his heart and you didn't need words to tell the other how scared you were of ever losing this, of expressing the common knowledge that there was no one, no one that could fill both of your hearts like the other does.
The silence that filled the air when he pressed wet cloths to your head and the one when he fed you the soup he'd learnt from his ma, when he carried you around in his arms so you couldn't exhaust yourself and pressed soft kisses to your face, when he'd run and get just about anything you needed without a single complaint.
The one that surrounded you when you'd sit with his head in your lap on that checkered red picnic blanket under the shade, eating the food you both spent the early hours making, excitedly finding spots to chase that very silence, to see the gorgeous sun and to feel the breeze rustling and tickling you with it,
Under the moonlight, laying in each other's arms. The calmness that surrounds after a night of soft embraces, affectionate smiles and love oozing with every action you take. To love together and feel it in its peaks together. The sheen of sweat that covers your bodies and the exhausted an blissed out smiles that stretch on your face as you agree to take in the moment for what it is.
The silence around you when you work together in harmony, under the golden light when you work perfectly to cook meals, for yourself and sometimes to share with the other people you'd opened your heart to and the ones you lived in. The calm before the carefree conversation and laughter would fill the air, when you'd stand together and watch, contented with the result of the work you'd put in.
The silent moments when you two sat together watching the rain pelt on the window, while he prepared to express the absolute love he'd been harboring for three summers now, the softness of the moment before it overflowed inevitably with happy tears and hammering heart beats.
The silence before the announcement, the final moment before you were his for everyone to know. He knew he belonged to you the moment he saw you. The soft single, moment before it all changed, before they gathered to experience something none of them had before.
Bucky fell in love with the silence just as well as he'd fallen for the sound. Silence that covered the lifetime of small moments full of love that the two of you were promised to have.
