Working on a painting for the 1st time in like 6 months.
A practice in reducing values and colors to geometric shapes. Also using open acrylics, which stay wet longer. It does feel more like oil painting!
I’m impressed by the vibrancy of the color compared to the transparency of the paint.
I don’t know if the tumblr app is still doing that stupid thing where image posts are done as “jpeg within a text post” format, which looks incredibly ugly and bypasses the formatting I did for my tumblr theme.
My boyfriend got me a rigid heddle loom for my 30th birthday. I’ve been working on my first piece. I think I started with the instructions for a scarf?? So this is probably going to be very long and I have no actual plan, I’m just getting a feel for things. It’ll be a surprise when I get to unroll the whole thing.
This tapestry has been worked on almost entirely while riding the bus.

My struggle is being willing to let go of details, of not getting too “precious” with it. Getting there with that hand... still working too much into parts of the face.
I remember reading something where a guy noticed that one class of 5 year olds produced more aesthetically pleasing art than other classes. When asked why her students’ art had better compositions and color choices, the teacher replied “Because I know when to take the piece away.”
Trying to keep this in mind. Don’t overwork. Let things go. Take it away.

As a trans guy who was raised in the theater and has a mom who’s an actress I have lots of Opinions on this subject.
To the right, you can see my mom when she was a Dolly Parton impersonator. And when she was in a Greek tragedy and shaved an inch off her hairline to recreate Greek hairstyles. And when she was in Candide.

WIP for a series of comics about things I’ve learned after 2 years on testosterone

The life of a mixed media artist is always intense.
So I wanted to do some comix on my thoughts/experiences since I've been on testosterone for over a year now and pretty consistently get "read" as a cisgender guy.
But I was like "Ugh, do I really want to do ANOTHER autobio comic? I'm bored of drawing myself."
And then I remembered that I'm an artist and I can actually CREATE CHARACTERS AND MAKE THEM SAY STUFF. So here are some doodles of the various trans dudes that will be in the comic. It'll be like that Bob Dylan movie where a bunch of different people play Bob Dylan.
...except a comic book.

grad school has helped me level up my procrastination skills
while avoiding reading and homework, I taught myself how to use Sculptris and created a bust of a character for a huge sprawling comic that may never actually happen!
I’m pretty pleased, what with this being my first sculpt and all.
