Yoo Sangah - Blog Posts

Han Sooyoung is like one of the most complex characters in the novel yet SOME people keep just reducing her to "im-emotionless and-a-typical-cold-snarky-girl-who-doesnt-give-shit-about-anything" meanwhile han sooyoung LITERALLY one of the characters that cares too much. "she doesnt care about anyone except kim dokja!!" yeah sure, thats why she went furious saying she will sign an outer world covenant when yoo sangah was about to die, that when kim dokja was absent she lived with yoo sangah for three years and sangah mentioned in fourth library she knew her very well, and while kim dokja was absent she was one of the people who took charge, like are you kidding me? if thats not caring then i have the emotional range of a teaspoon. at this point im doubting that some of yall havent read the novel at all, or just lost the ability be able to see beneath the surface of a character. they were serious when media literacy is dead i suppose. not to mention she isnt snarky but rather playful after getting close to kdj's company. and I am seeing this with a lot of female characters- but the most obvious victims to these are han sooyoung and yoo sangah. lets talk about yoo sangah now. the woman whos whole character arc was about to defy the standarts and streotypes that were put on women by society, getting streotyped by the most of the fandom again. whenever i see a post about yoo sangah, its just all about how shes so perfect meanwhile her arc says otherwise. now some may get me wrong, we of course all say sometimes that "i love that character sm!! theyre sooo perfect" thats not what im talking about. im talking about that some people still just sees sangah as a mary sue streotype to the point of hating her. LEAVE MY GIRLS ALONE.

A digital illustration of Yoo Sangah and Han Sooyoung from Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, as depicted in the webtoon. Han Sooyoung is lifting Yoo Sangah into the air while grinning at the viewer, creating a slightly blurred effect. She is dressed in a snug, short-sleeved black top and has a simple silver ring visible on her right ring finger. Yoo Sangah, meanwhile, laughs as she is lifted into the air, her arms around Han Sooyoung's shoulders. She is dressed in a loose-fitting short-sleeved white top, contrasting Han Sooyoung's black one.

My part of a collab for the @orv-gotcha-for-gaza event! It was an honor to work with you guys on this. Huge thank you to @/constellorv on twitter for donating, and to the mods for organizing this huge endeavor! Though the official donation phase is closed, the need for donations is not, so to anybody reading this: please continue finding and contributing to fundraisers you come across; this is the ORV G4G's original donation page if you're not sure where to start, but by no means is that an exhaustive list!

i think ysa missed dokja the most in the epilogues after yoohan. their main bond that formed during and because of their ordinary lives before the scenarios, all of that erased and filtered out from him…… the guy sitting in the closet while you poured black pepper in the company's coffee machine is gone. you are alone with your memories and no one else remembers the things you did at work when you were at your worst. you turn around to glance at the past once again only to find that theres no one there anymore.

girlboss yoo sangah is such a terrifying concept to me. do not get me wrong yoo sangah is a very powerful and capable and independent woman in ways that can appear to overlap with the girlboss archetype. but then its ignored where these traits come from!!

yoo sangah has had to be very self sufficient and 'powerful' her whole life because the alternative has always been catastrophic. for example becoming a house wife like her parents want vs girlbossing at a job where she gets harrassed and treated like shit, or dying in the apocalypse vs being useful to kimcom at the cost of her health (<- not necessarily actual dichotomies but the ones she believes in). and thus she ends up self-reliant in a way that leads to her having to endure a lot!! whether it's her trying to shrug off han myungoh's sexist comments or take on the weight of probability for kimcom. and we see that maybe these dichotomies she seems to live in are not so helpful, and maybe the idea that she does not need to be the #girlboss handling everything would be beneficial.

because she's just a person!! she's not uniquely capable or intelligent or even kind - not to a higher extent than any other woman in your workplace, at least. not beyond the realm of belief. which is the point! girlboss yoo sangah is almost kim dokja's vision of her - a perfect version who never falters where others would, who can reign in the boys and keep everything on track with a flick of a wrist and a smile - and theres a reason that version of her gets explicitly deconstructed

a character without flaws isnt a character worth thinking about, which is why to strip yoo sangah of her flaws is to strip her of anything interesting. the heroine can and will falter, she will be petty and weak and tired, and yoo sangah is devoted to showing us that. so i wish there was more content that explored that side of her

throughout the story both kim dokja and han sooyoung define themselves in opposition to yoo sangah. kim dokja defines himself as a reader in contrast to yoo sangah as a protagonist, and han sooyoung defines herself as a villainess in contrast to yoo sangah as a heroine. outsider vs insider, evil vs good. in doing so, they dehumanize themselves and yoo sangah. kim dokja denies himself the agency that he gives a protagonist, positioning himself as merely an observer in both his life and others to cope with his mental health issues. han sooyoung denies herself any emotional or moral complexity, assigning herself a simple role she feels most comfortable in due to her own self worth issues as a way to conceptualize how her 'genre' as changed around her.

as coping strategies, these kinda suck ass. they hurt themselves in doing so, and they hurt yoo sangah. the overlapping roles they assign to her - protagonist and heroine - make unrealistic demands of her, project a perfection that isn't real, put her in a box and ignore all attempts to escape it. they distance themselves from her and damage their relationships in the process. and a large part of yoo sangah's character and arc is her either fighting back against this dehumanization or just refusing to play ball as a way to deconstruct the heroine archetype. when she is dying she uses what seem to be her final moment to make one last escape attempt of kim dokja's idolization of her, reminding him of the pepper incident and forcing him to recognize her as not just a person but a friend. and during moments when she and han sooyoung are at odds, their different attitudes towards it are so stark - han sooyoung regards it as almost a battle of good and evil, whereas yoo sangah sees it as a more personal argument. han sooyoung's discomfort comes from a clashing of philosphies, whereas yoo sangah's comes from the fact han sooyoung is kind of a fucking bitch who has killed people she cares about and might again.

when kim dokja and han sooyoung categorize the world in this way, they dehumanize themselves and their loved ones. and yoo sangah refuses to play along, recognizing both her own and their humanity and forcing that same recognition onto them. when kim dokja and han sooyoung build a wall between themselves and yoo sangah, defining themselves by that distance, yoo sangah climbs it. yoo sangah doesn't just expose the dangers of the small box she gets shoved in, but exposes the others as well. she's an incredibly important character for orv because she does exactly that - it's an extension of her larger role in the narrative as someone who challenges roles and tropes of the genre, who reaches across the divide caused by these expectations we create for ourselves and others and says hey, im just a person, just like you. so maybe we should hang out sometime and just be that, yeah?

idk if y'all remember that instance when yoo sangah decided to read all of dokja's memories, a move which made a lot of people hate her, but, here's my take on that: yoo sangah is a person who knows how to take risks, or at least she tries to know how to assess them correctly, and, you know, to have a relationship it is necessary to take those risks, especially if you want to get closer to someone else, if you want to let them know you're there for them. Then, what if the person you wanted to get closer to and so badly understand is Kim Dokja? The guy who's so deeply ashamed of himself he has to hide behind a wall, the guy who feels so proud of not letting anyone get to know him because he believes no one can nor will ever understand him so it's better to push them away, the coworker who paired up with you on your first interview, the coworker who kept quiet while you put pepper onto the coffe machine and even took the effort to move the cameras so that they wouldn't fire you, he, the one who talks to you without the intention to get something back nor seeing you as an object, and who also seems to be okay with you despite feeling so distant, Dokja, Kim Dokja, your dear friend.

And then he sacrifices himself. Over and over again. What would you do then? Yoo Sangah can't just stand there doing nothing, watching him suffer silently. She's an empath, she wants to be there for people, and he's her friend, she has to do something about it, let him know all KimCom is there for him, that she's there for him, but he's being so stubbornly distant with everyone. It is also at this point of the novel where Dokja's debating whether to tell them that they're all characters of a novel, and therefore being much more distant. What is there to do for yoo sangah? It's a desperate situation, and such desperate times require bigger risks to take in for the relationship; to read dokja's memories is dangerous, it is to overstep his boundaries and privacy, dokja may never want to talk to her again, because it is a betrayal in itself. Yoo sangah knows all of this, but she's willing to take the risk, for him. It is incredibly selfish as well, but it is the only way out for her, the only way she feels she can reach out to him beyond that wall.

I saw a poll where it shows most ORV Fans headcanon Dokja and Sangah as platonic friends only and that's good and all. You do you. But I suggest taking out your platonic posts outside of the Doksang ship name tag if you do not mean to ship them romantically.

Ship names always mean romantic in every fandom for decades including East Asian fandoms. If you talk about a couple being the best of friends under their ship name, you're not respecting fandom etiquette. This also makes it harder for shippers to find each other if the ship is a rare pair so it's just frustrating for all of us.

You don't want anti shippers to talk about your yaoi or yuri ships loving each other platonically under their ship tag, right? Don't do that for other shippers then. Some of us (me) like all Dokja ships as romantic and don't want to see any of those ships being called platonic right under their ship name.

If you want to talk about platonic dynamics, use "Character & Character" tag instead or just names like on ao3 to indicate no romance. (If you know how to use tumblr, you have to kmow how to use ao3)
