it’s just. GOD. even *slightly* implying that disability could be good or desirable or even completely neutral makes everyone come out of the woodwork to say that Disability Is Nothing But Suffering. and I just want to stare them down and say. my chronically ill ass knows about suffering and I do not need that suffering compounded by some annoying asshole who ultimately imagines me as a burden

people will look at classic dystopian sci-fi like "wow how did the author predict this would happen" and the answer is they didn't. they hoped and hoped this wouldn't happen. (some of them, the lucky few perhaps, even died believing the worst had been averted.) these writers took a look at terrible things happening around them, and imagined a future where these terrible things dominated and warped reality, and they held it up to the audience and said "see? does this future not appall you??? it has already begun."

I laughed bout this post but I also think you’re a bit too pessimistic. At least in my experience it’s also boys who take care of themselves that don’t get compliments, and by compliments they don’t only mean for their appearance. Calling someone smart is a compliment, telling them their voice sounds nice is a compliment, saying they are funny is a compliment,,, I think what they actually seek is affection and reassurance for the things they may be insecure about, like any other person.

I just know that the dudes who make those "girls get 500 compliments a day vs. guy gets one compliment once and cherishes it for the rest of his life" memes put zero effort into their appearance. Like what exactly do you expect people to say? Wow nice plain ill-fitting hoodie, goes great with your basic-ass blue jeans and nondescript haircut. Got some real cool Grey Man vibes going on, you could seamlessly blend into any crowd ever without being seen at all.

Like nobody has any obligation to look any certain way, but you can't expect to be praised for doing something you're not even trying to do. I dress like I got tarred and feathered in a Tim Burton film costume department discard scrap pile, and someone saying they like my style is a biweekly occurrence.

i hate it when people are writing a long ass thing and start a parenthetical aside and forget to close parentheses it makes me feel like i cant escape from the sentence

There's an EU initiative going on right now that essentially boils down to wanting to force videogame publishers with paid games and/or games with paid elements such as DLC, expansions and microtransactions to leave said games in a playable state after they end support, or in simpler terms, make them stop killing games.

A "playable state" would be something like an offline mode for previously always online titles, or the ability for people to host their own servers where reasonably possible just to name some examples.

I don't think I need to tell anyone that having something you paid for being taken from you is bad, which is a thing that routinely happens with live service and other always online games with a notable recent example being The Crew which is now permanently unplayable.

Any EU citizen is eligible to sign the initiative, but only once and if you mess up that's it. You can find it here. (https://citizens-initiative.europa.eu/initiatives/details/2024/000007_en)

Even if you're not European or you signed it already, you can share this initiative with anyone who is, even if they don't care about videogames specifically because this needs a million signatures and there is different thresholds that need to be met for each EU country for their votes to even count and could also be a precedent for other similar practices like when Sony removed a bunch of Discovery TV content people paid for.

you may argue “but how do I know if my work is good without feedback?”

and to that I say, the fact that you are simply creating, connecting ideas and bringing them to life on paper is a process so passionate and beautiful, how could it not be good?

even with spelling errors, even with unfinished ideas, even with a strange writing style - it is still art, and it is beautiful.

No matter what they say, there are no rules to art that define good and bad. You are good, for you are an artist <3

you need to seriously challenge your mindset of writing for likes and such. You already know you should write for yourself, so do it.

It does not matter. They are numbers.

If your productivity and motivation are tied to how much positive feedback you get, you are killing the artist inside of you. To be an artist means to not be chained down by anything - not opinions, not feedback, not an audience.

It is no complex, hard task to stop caring. Just stop. Stop caring for it. I promise, it will be the most freeing thing you can do for your mind.

I sit down to write and suddenly all the little things bother me… The dirt on my monitor display, the red underlined spelling error on the page, my broken Y-button, the random question of how to set an apostrophe correctly, the looming guilt of possibly being illiterate for not knowing the apostrophe thing besides doing this writing thing for a living since six years, the unspoken truth that if I were to give up on my job I would give up on the only thing I’m barely good at, the fact my dad never apologised

being a writer is writing an action scene and making the sound effects out loud for full immersion

So writers joke a lot about "drinking the tears of our readers", but I want to be so honest with you when I tell you that making you cry isn't our real goal. Making you feel is.

Kicking your feet? Giggling? Can't stop smiling? And yes, crying? Feeling anything, everything. That's our goal. That means we did The Job.
